The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team dropped its conference opener to Hartwick, 3-1. Leading goal-scorer Mike Unwin (Basingstoke, England/Iowa CC) led the Bulls’ offensive attack, scoring off a chest pass in the 31st minute.
The Hawks scored first at the 11th minute-mark off a corner kick. Owen Botting sent a bending kick into a crowd of blue and white jerseys with Nick Pratico heading the ball in for the Hawks’ 1-0 lead. In the 28th minute, the Hawks doubled their advantage as Jumol Harewood scooped up a loose rebound off a shot by Steven Amaya to put the Hawks in the lead 2-0.
A few minutes later, the Bulls’ cut the Hawks lead in half as they scored their first tally in the 31st minute. With a crowd in front of the Hawks’ net, senior defender Steffen Thoresen (Trondheim, Norway/ Kristen Videregaaende Tronderlag) led the ball up to Unwin, located near the left-goal post. Unwin received the chest pass, hitting the ball home to cut the Hawks’ lead to 2-1.

Week 2 of the 2009 NFL regular season is in the books, and your Buffalo Bills are 1-1 – though they should be 2-0. Before we move on to take a look at the Bills’ next big game – and yes, it is very much a big game – we’ll take one last look back today on the Bills’ 33-20 triumph over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2.
We did this last week after the Bills’ opening week loss, and we’ll do it every week – so mark your calendars, folks, because Tuesdays are film sessions at Buffalo Sports Daily & Buffalo Rumblings.
Trent Edwards deserves a bit more praise. Buffalo put up 20 points and took a 20-14 lead into the half, but Trent Edwards didn’t have a particularly great first half. True, his interception came in the second half – and for the record, that was just a ball that got away from Trent, and that’s a difficult throw to make when you’re on the money – but Edwards completed 15 of his 18 throws in the second half. Those plays went for 145 yards, and most importantly, they came in the face of very solid Tampa pressure – Brad Butler was out of the game at that point, and the Bucs were blitzing a bit more frequently as they played catch-up. “Poise” is one of the most over-used cliches in football, but our quarterback has it.
On our new starting right tackle… Jonathan Scott got into the game very late in the second quarter and, obviously, the rest of the first half. Folks, Brad Butler he is not – and though his performance was solid enough given the circumstances, the Bills’ offensive line now has a clear weak link.

NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora is reporting via Twitter that the Buffalo Bills will sign OT Jamon Meredith off of the practice squad of the Green Bay Packers.
Meredith, a rookie out of South Carolina, was the second of Green Bay’s two fifth-round pick this season (No. 162 overall). The 6′5″, 304-pound tackle is regarded as a very athletic, very raw prospect, and the fact that Green Bay – which just surrendered five sacks to Bengals DE Antwan Odom – had him on the practice squad as a fifth-round rookie speaks volumes. Athleticism was a priority for the team in finding a reserve tackle because of the physical demands of the team’s up-tempo, no-huddle offense.
Buffalo needed a tackle after learning on Monday that starting right tackle Brad Butler’s season is over. Meredith will be the team’s emergency tackle and likely will not be active – unless one of the team’s top three tackles (Demetrius Bell, Jonathan Scott, Kirk Chambers) succumbs to injury as well.
The Bills generally go into games with seven active linemen. This move cements Scott in as the Bills’ starting right tackle for the immediate future, and Chambers – a key reserve in 2007 and 2008 that has not yet been active this season – becomes the team’s top backup at both left and right tackle.
At 5’10” and 223 pounds, Marcus Buggs has heard all the naysayers. “He’s too short.” “He’s not fast enough for the NFL.” “He’ll never be more than a practice squad player.”
The skeptics were wrong. This past week and for the foreseeable future, this underdog is the starting middle linebacker for the Buffalo Bills.
Seeing Buggs on the field draws comparison to former Bills linebacker London Fletcher. Although not quite as athletic as Fletcher, the stature is near identical.
So is their pedigree. Fletcher went on to become a NFL star but was anything but a can’t miss prospect on his road to stardom. He attended John Carroll University and entered the league undrafted before catching on with St. Louis and launching a successful career that’s still going strong with Washington today.
Heading into the 2008 NFL draft, Buggs wasn’t projected to be selected by a club either. He wasn’t, but the disappointment was soon washed away after Buggs was scooped up by the Bills as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2008. He played well in camp but with John DiGiorgio already backing up starter Paul Posluszny it became a numbers game. Buggs was released by the team following the preseason on August 31, 2008, but then re-signed the next day after clearing waivers to the team’s practice squad.

The St. Bonaventure golf team came up just four strokes shy of claiming it 14th team title at the Leo Keenan Invitational on Monday, as Drexel stormed back from six shots down to take the 21st annual event at Bartlett Country Club.
The Bonnies entered the final round two shots behind Binghamton after carding a four-man score of 290 on Sunday. Led by senior Nathan Peck’s one-over par 71, the Brown and White posted the second-best final round of the day with a 297 on Monday. Unfortunately, Drexel bested the Bonnies by eight strokes with a 289 to pull off the come from behind win.
“The guys put together a good effort and I’m proud of the way they battled,” said head coach Andy Whalen. “It’s never a good feeling to finish second, but I know we didn’t play our best. We kicked away some shots out there and you just can’t do that on your home course.”

Freshman Tori Beckman (Kansas City, MO/Park Hill) picked up her first conference accolade on Monday afternoon as she was named the Mid-American Conference East Defensive Player of the Week. Beckman tallied 72 digs on the week, helping the Bulls to the title at the Cornell Invitational.
Beckman averaged 5.14 digs per set as she began the week with a 24-dig performance against Syracuse. Beckman then went to the Cornell Invitational where she recorded at least 15 digs in all three of UB¹s three-set victories as the Bulls have won seven of their last eight contests.
“I am glad to see Tori recognized for her outstanding play this past week,” said head coach Todd Kress. “She has made a huge difference on this team since the first match and continues to be a big reason for our success.”
Beckman currently leads the Bulls with 208 digs on the season and her 4.73 digs per set rank second in the conference. She is also currently second on the team in service aces and assists.
The Bulls begin MAC play this weekend as they head to Miami (OH) on Friday night. UB will then face Bowling Green on Saturday.
Bulls Successful on Two Fronts
The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team took four of its top players to the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational while the remainder of the squad competed at the Niagara Doubles Shootout. The Bulls reached championship matches at both venues. There was no team scoring at either meet.
Kalinin Makes Finals at Princeton
At the Princeton meet, the Bulls were led by sophomore Alex Kalinin (Naberezhnye Chelny, Russia/Naberezhnye Chelny School 11) as he reached the championship round of the E singles. In his first competition of the fall, Kalinin opened play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Binghamton’s Andreas Danielsson and then picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Princeton’s Parker Preyer in the second round. Kalinin advanced to the championship match with his 6-4, 6-3 win over Jeff Karsh of Penn. However, Kalinin’s run was stopped on Sunday as he fell in the championship match to Matt Schimmel of Yale, 6-2, 6-3.

When he was fired on September 4, former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Turk Schonert fired a parting shot at head coach Dick Jauron, claiming that the Bills’ much-maligned leader wanted a “Pop Warner offense.” Jauron handed the reigns of his offense to quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt, himself very inexperienced as an assistant coach, let alone as a play-caller of any sort.
The Bills have two games in the bag – and if this is the “Pop Warner offense” that Schonert described and apparently was loathe to employ, there’s little wonder as to why Schonert was ousted in the first place.
The offense has not been perfect. The unit, led by quarterback Trent Edwards, has produced 43 points on its own through two games – four touchdowns (all through the air) and five field goals. It’s solid production from a unit that most were down on after a rough pre-season; let’s not forget that the unit is still green in key areas as well (quarterback, offensive line). The offense has hardly been remarkable, but it has been ridiculously efficient. He’s got just 120 minutes of NFL play-calling experience under his belt, but Van Pelt has orchestrated one of the NFL’s most balanced offenses through two weeks.

The Buffalo Bills made a lot of noise on the field on Sunday. Unfortunately, news in the wake of the game has been hard to digest. First came a report that Donte Whitner’s house was robbed Sunday. According to Bills AP writer John Wawrow, Whitner discovered about $400,000 worth of jewelry missing following Sunday’s win against Tampa Bay.
As Wawrow accurately states, the theft was reported just one week after teammate Leodis McKelvin’s front lawn in the Hamburg same suburb was vandalized by two teenagers following Buffalo’s season-opening loss to New England.
Then came word, as first broke by our own Brian Galliford that offensive tackle Brad Butler will miss the rest of the season with a right knee injury.
Butler injured the knee in the second quarter of yesterday’s game against Tampa Bay. He was pass blocking when defensive end Stylez White lost his balance and rolled into the back of his right leg.

Former Bills RB Booker Moore has died. Per Paul Hamilton of WGR-550, the Bills 1981 first round pick died of an apparent heart attack.
Hamilton writes that “Moore was in the hospital Friday and received a stent according to authorities in Flint, Michigan. He was released and was watching football yesterday when stricken.”
Moore played in the NFL until 1986 playing with the Bills and Detroit. After that he spent 20 years as a Seriff’s deputy in Flint. Moore was 50 years old.

The Buffalo Sabres will hit the ice for the third time this preseason, when they travel to Washington to take on the Capitals at 7PM.
Washington defeated Buffalo in the Sabres opener, 4-3 in overtime. The Sabres bounce back to defeat Detroit, 3-1 on Saturday night to even their record at 1-0-1.
Ryan Miller, who made 42 saves at Detroit, will not be in the lineup tonight. Patrick Lalime and Jhonas Enroth will share duties between the pipes.
Tim Connolly, Derek Roy, Mike Grier, Jason Pominville and Craig Rivet are among veterans scheduled to get the night off. Steve Matador will not play for precautionary reasons. He has a shoulder stinger.
Tim Kennedy and Nathan Gerbe, both vying for a final roster spot will be in the lineup. So will 2008 first round pick Tyler Ennis.
After the game the Sabres will immediately fly home to get ready to face the Toronto Maple Leafs at the HSBC Arena on Wednesday night.
You can listen to the game on WGR-550 radio.
Buffalo Sports Daily writer Brian Galliford has just spoke to a source, and Bills right tackle Brad Butler is done for the season. Butler injured his right knee in the second quarter of yesterday’s game against Tampa Bay. He was pass blocking when defensive end Stylez White lost his balance and rolled into the back of Butler’s right leg.
He could barely put any weight on the leg and had to be helped off the field.
Expect an announcement from head coach Dick Jauron sometime within the next hour. Butler, with his 31 career starts was the Bills most experienced starting offensive linemen.
The question quickly becomes if the Bills reach out to Jon Runyan. The 35-year old free agent tackle worked out for the Bills on September 11. If not, Jonathan Scott, who replaced him on Sunday or Kirk Chambers will have to assume the starting role. Regardless, a roster move on the offensive line should be coming very soon.
While it’s not likely, it is possible released tackle Langston Walker could return. He’s still available and had more success on the right side than the left. The Bills saved $3 million when they cut Walker exactly one week before the regular season began.

The Buffalo Bills established their feisty performance this past Monday night as no fluke. They took the field against Tampa Bay Sunday in front of a rabid crowd, in a game they were expected to win… And did precisely just that. Big plays on both sides of the ball stormed them to a quick 17-0 lead, allowed the Bucs to hang around along the way before promptly putting them away, via the popcorn guy (who apparently had some of that popcorn butter on his fingers in the first half).
Our quarterback played the way a third year improving quarterback is supposed to. Our big money receivers made a couple of those big money plays. The defense basically shut down a running game that entered Sunday as one of the league’s most feared, led by Haloti Ngata, who showed up disguised as Kyle Williams.
And our head coach is suddenly hip.
My game thoughts, in entirely random order:

Men Race Second, Women Third at Stampede Meet
Perfect running conditions paced the University at Buffalo men’s and women’s cross country teams to strong finishes at the 2009 UB Stampede Invitational held at Beaver Island State Park in Grand Island. In the team competition, the UB men, ranked 15th in the Northeast Region, were edged out of the team title by Mid-American Conference rival Akron by one point with Akron scoring 58 to UB’s 59. Rochester was third at 64. Cornell scored 20 points to win the women’s meet with Akron (44) and UB (88) taking second and third, respectively.
Quick Pace Dictates Men’s Race
Temperatures in the mid-60s with clear skies and little wind enabled the runners to post some of the course’s best times. In the men’s race, Akron’s Joe McCoy broke the course record by finishing the 8K distance in 25:29, seven seconds ahead of Dan Giza, representing the UBXC Alumni. The previous record of 25:48 was set last season by Binghamton’s Erik Van Ingen. Jacob Hagen (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) was UB’s top male finisher in 25:59, taking fourth. Ryan Bloom (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) finished 10th in 26:19 with Dylan Conway (Commack, NY/Hauppauge) taking 11th in 26:20. Also finishing in the top 20 for the Bulls were Mike Gillis (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) in 16th and Ryan Zillmann (Deer Park, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) in 18th place. Both runners finished in 26:33. A total of 108 men’s runners competed.

The Jamestown Jets won two out of three against Team Ulysee from the province of Quebec. The Jets two wins are games that won’t be forgotten by those in attendance.
On Friday the Jets had one of the most incredible comebacks that have ever been seen. Team Ulysee controlled play through 40 minutes and it looked like they would coast to an easy victory. Team Ulysee scored three in the first period and four in the second on their way to a 7-2 lead.
Jamestown came out of the locker room with a spark but it wasn’t until 11:54 was left on the clock that Joe Coyne pulled the Jets within 7-3. By the time the clock read 8:29 the Jets had scored five more times and held an 8-7 lead. The Jets added two more goals in the final minutes and coasted to a 10-7 win.

The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team took on cross-town rival Canisius this afternoon at Demske Sports Complex, falling to the Griffs, 3-1. Senior Sara Hilliard (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored her first career goal and the Bulls’ only goal of the game off a pass from Natasha Arana (Island Park, NY/West Hempstead) at the 82:33 mark to put the Bulls on the board.
Canisius took an early lead, scoring the first goal of the game in the 16th minute of play. The Griffs snuck another one by UB goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) less than 10 minutes later to put the Griffs up by two. The Bulls had their chances to score, as Julie Dale (Cary, NC/Raleigh Charter) and Stephanie Velez (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) each had two shots in the first half.

Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh proved to be unkind to the visiting St. Bonaventure women’s soccer team as it struggled on both ends of the field in a 4-0 loss to Big East foe Pittsburgh at Founders Field.
Currently in a four-game losing streak going into conference play, the Bonnies have dropped to a 3-6 non-conference season record. On the flip side, Pittsburgh picks up its first win in four games to 5-2-1 on the season.
The Brown and White were limited on the offensive end to just seven shots. The Bonnies edged the Panthers in kicks 6-1. Kathryn Kerman earned two saves and Nicole Makert notched one in the shared time in the net. Anna Cunningham led the team with three shots.
“We didn’t come ready to play and were punished early for some silly mistakes. Give credit to Pitt for taking advantage,” said head coach Manoj Khettry. “In the 2nd half we competed and controlled a great deal of the tempo and had some great chances but couldn’t find the net.”

The Canisius College volleyball team opened the first MAAC weekend of the season with a split, losing in three sets to Fairfield University in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday. The Golden Griffins (4-8, 1-1 MAAC) lost 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 to see their 11-match home conference winning streak come to an end.
Junior Renee Lettow led Canisius with 12 kills on the day. Senior Michelle Godfrey had seven kills and seven block assists. Sophomore Janelle Davis had 26 assists while freshman Allyson Severyn had 16 digs.
“Not only didn’t we execute the physical play, we didn’t bring the energy and attention to play with one of the top teams in our conference,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We need to learn from this loss but also move on quickly, as it’s never easy to win conference matches on the road.”

The Canisius College men’s soccer team cruised to a 4-1 victory over Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon, earning its first win of the 2009 campaign.
“Today was definitely a complete team effort,” said Canisius head coach Jim Hesch. “We are slowly improving each day and it is great to see it finally paying off.”
Three Griffs scored their first collegiate goal in the victory. Sophomore Jason Marks (Dublin, Ireland) plus freshmen Ian Buzzio (Morristown, N.J.) and Sam Zarka (Paris, France) netted their first career goal, with senior Alan McGreal (Dublin, Ireland) rounding out the scoring for the Griffs. Zarka also added an assist to lead the Griffs with three points on the afternoon.
Sophomores Adam Miller (Reading, Pa.) and Luke Seymour (Canton, N.Y.) each saw time in goal for Canisius. Miller recorded two saves to earn his first victory of the season.

The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team took four of its top players to the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational and finished the weekend with some impressive results.
The tournament, which also included teams from Penn State, Binghamton, St. John’s and Ivy League members Columbia, Cornell, Penn, Yale and Princeton, consisted of five singles flights and two doubles flights.
Among the top performances for the Bulls was sophomore Alex Kalinin (Naberezhnye Chelny, Russia/Naberezhnye Chelny School 11) as he reached the championship round of the E singles. Kalinin opened play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Binghamton’s Andreas Danielsson and then picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Princeton’s Parker Preyer in the second round. Kalinin advanced to the championship match with his 6-4, 6-3 win over Jeff Karsh of Penn. However, Kalinin’s run was stopped on Sunday as he fell in the championship match to Matt Schimmel of Yale, 6-2, 6-3.
