 The Canisius College hockey team was selected to finish fifth in the Atlantic Hockey Association preseason poll, announced by the league on Tuesday.
The Griffs, who also finished fifth during the 2008-09 regular season standings, return 22 letterwinners, including 87 percent of their scoring and all three goaltenders. During the 2008-09 season, Canisius also earned its first victories against a nationally-ranked opponent, CCHA school and ECAC school.
Three-time defending champion Air Force was slated to finish first, receiving eight of 10 first-place votes. Mercyhurst, who has finished as the league’s runner-up in each of the last two seasons, received the other two first-place votes and was slotted second. RIT and Holy Cross were picked just ahead of the Griffs at third and fourth, respectively.
Army, Bentley, Sacred Heart, Connecticut and AIC rounded out the preseason coaches poll.
Canisius opens the 2009-10 campaign at home against Ferris State on Oct. 9. Game time at the Buffalo State Sports Arena is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
 The University at Buffalo’s men’s cross country team received a number 15 ranking in the Northeast Region as the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its preseason poll late Monday.
The Bulls earned the ranking following last season’s finish at the 2008 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships as UB placed 18th among 33 schools. In 2009, the Bulls have tied for fourth at the Tommy Evans Invitational and placed fifth at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational.
This is the first week of polling for the 2009 season. The next poll will be released on September 28 and continue every Monday through the end of the season.
The UB women spent three weeks in the 2008 regional poll reaching a high of number 12.
The Bulls host the UB Stampede Invitational at Beaver Island State Park in Grand Island on Saturday, September 19 in their next action. The men’s 8K race will begin at noon with the women’s 5K race to follow at 12:45 pm.

 One phrase will be repeated over and over throughout this fine Tuesday in the wake of the Buffalo Bills’ 25-24 heart-wrenching loss to the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. “We had ‘em.”
Buffalo led in Gillette Stadium – where they still have not won a game – 14-10 at halftime, and 24-13 with just under six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. I won’t repeat the rest, because I’m sure most of you had enough stomach issues throughout last night; I do not wish to burden your intestines further.
There isn’t a ton of finger-pointing going on this morning, mostly because the vast majority of this fan base was flabbergasted that the Bills were competitive at all in this game. If there is finger-pointing going on, the obvious target is KR Leodis McKelvin, whose fumble did not give the Bills’ surprising offense a chance to put the game on ice. McKelvin’s fumble is just the tip of the iceberg, however. These young Bills, as talented and hard-working as they are, have a lot of growing up to do.
McKelvin made the right decision
As ugly and, unfortunately, predictable as McKelvin’s fumble with under two minutes remaining was, many Bills fans spent the overnight ripping the second-year corner for returning the ball in the first place. Folks, McKelvin had to take that ball out if he didn’t think he caught it in the end zone – which he confirmed was the case after the game. If he kneels that ball in the end zone without knowing for sure that he’s clean, it’s a safety, the ball goes back to New England anyways, and though they have to drive further, they only need a field goal to tie.

 Following an off-season that even the most optimistic person would describe as excruciatingly disastrous, Patrick Kane has something extremely positive to look forward to. The EA Sports video game NHL 10, with the Chicago Blackhawks right wing on the cover, hits North American retail stores Tuesday, September 15th.
A native of Buffalo, NY, Kane is just the second American-born player to be featured on the cover of the top-selling EA Sports hockey videogame franchise. New York Rangers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck was the first when he was featured on the cover of NHL 97. Kane is the youngest player ever chosen for the cover of the NHL franchise and his image will front all packaging related to NHL 10.
The physical image of Kane remains on the product, despite the public image of Kane suffering a huge black eye last month. You’ll remember on August 9, Kane and his cousin, James M. Kane, were arrested in Buffalo for allegedly assaulting a taxicab driver.
They were eventually cleared of any felony charges, but indictments on less severe misdemeanor assault, theft and harassment charges still loomed overhead. On August 27, the Kanes pleaded guilty to non-criminal disorderly conduct charges, and the court ordered them to issue an apology to the driver. So essentially, the storm has passed from a legal perspective.

 Since the 2009 NBA draft, one thing has remained constant for Niagara Falls native Jonny Flynn. Uncertainty. Uncertainty about if the Minnesota Timberwolves were keeping him on draft night, uncertainty of how he would fit next to Ricky Rubio had he not elected to stay overseas, and now uncertainty about minutes and his role on the team with the newly signed Ramon Sessions.
The signing of Sessions made plenty of sense to the Timberwolves brass, but at first it was bewildering for Flynn and his supporters. If you were in control of an NBA franchise that just took two point guards in the draft, even if one isn’t coming to the NBA for 2-3 years, why would you go out and sign another young (23-years old) point guard? Doesn’t this obscure things with your other two guards? The major issues I’m hearing is since Sessions is already an established point guard in the NBA, aren’t you hindering the development of your sixth overall pick in Flynn?
The answer to all is simple. You’re not hampering Flynn in any way. Sessions may be a point, but he is 6’3 190 lbs. He can hold his own against shooting guards and has proven so while playing alongside Luke Ridnour last season in Milwaukee. David Kahn (Wolves’ GM) has made it clear to anyone asking that Flynn and Sessions will be playing alongside each other this season and won’t be waging a head-to-head battle for minutes. Both should be logging around 30 minutes a game; a significant amount of playing time, especially for a rookie. Keep in mind Flynn is going from a 35-40 game college schedule at Syracuse to the NBA grind of 82 games.
The most likely scenario entails Sessions in the starting lineup alongside Flynn, since the Wolves are severely lacking at shooting guard this season. This is a great situation for Flynn since Sessions is a pass-first guard. Flynn will get many more shooting looks alongside Sessions than he would a scoring guard like previous years on the Wolves’ Roster (Randy Foye/Rashad McCants). This could greatly enhance his chances at becoming the 2009-10 Rookie of the Year, which he’s been projected to finish second in a few writer’s selections (mainly ESPN). Flynn will also have a capable guard to get the ball to in the offense since Sessions has a solid reputation of getting to the basket. He’s a major upgrade to what Flynn had alongside of him a few days ago (Wayne Ellington/Antonio Daniels).
Altogether, the signing of Sessions does not subdue Flynn’s chances to showcase his skills right out of the blocks. In fact, he’s expected to have inflated numbers because of Sessions’ skill-set and ability to set others up.
Flynn will get as many minutes as he can handle, and because Jonny will be a focal point of this Timberwolves team, it should be fun for fans to follow the Western New York product all season long.

 The Jamestown Jets kicked off their second season this past weekend. They were victorious in the opener Friday Night before letting the game slip away on Saturday.
On Friday the Jets used a mixture of old faces and new to beat the Findlay Grrrowl 5-2 at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. Lorne Shotwell led the way making 26 saves, including 14 of 15 in the second period.
It was a mostly listless first period as both teams tried to become acclimated to the new season. Newcomer Alex Stahl started the scoring when he beat Findlay goalie Lucas Fornier on a backhand near the half way mark of the first period. Stahl had three other opportunities but Fornier stopped him twice on a breakaway and another with the glove on a wrist shot.
Jamestown added to their lead in the second period on a goal by Jon Andhor. Andhor waited till Fornier went to his knees and fired a shot over his shoulder and into the top of the net. Andhor is one of the six holdovers from last year’s team and had five goals last season. Ryan Schnell added another goal for the Jets to put them ahead 3-0.
The Findlay Grrrowl would not go away quietly however. They scored a late second period goal and cut the lead to 3-2 with 14:35 left in the game. They applied some pressure at times in the third period but Lorne Shotwell slammed the door for Jamestown.

* Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News writes that after coming so close, this finishing kicks hits the Bills in the gut.
* The loss hurts, but ESPN.com’s Tim Graham says that the fans need to settle down.
* Nick Mendola of WGR550 puts the loss squarely on Leodis McKelvin’s shoulders in his post-game column.
* Many fans are angry at McKelvin, but in this Buffalo News article, he said he’d bring that last kickoff game again.
* The Boston Globe simply concludes that the Bills gave the game away.
* There were positives to take away from the game. Tim Schmitt of the Niagara Gazette takes a look at some of them.
* Sal Maiorana of the Rochester D&C grades the Bills in his report card.
Dick Jauron confirmed at his press conference that Paul Posluszny has a broken bone in his arm. There is no word on how long he will be out.
It’s the same arm he broke in 2007, also playing on the road against the New Enlgand Patriots.
This likely puts Marcus Buggs into a forced starting role at middle linebacker for the short term, and possibly a lot longer.
Chris Kelsay injured his knee just before halftime and didn’t return, but his status is not yet known.
 If you’re looking at this post, you already the Bills have lost to New England, 25-24. We already know Leodis McKelvin’s fumble was the backbreaker. We’ll have much more on this game in the morning.
But the following statement can’t wait. Dick Jauron should now be officially on the hot seat, if he wasn’t already.
When a head coach makes a big roster move, the onus of credit or blame should fall on him., Well, it was Jauron that decided just seven days ago Langston Walker wasn’t good enough to start at left tackle on this football team. He made the assessment that Demetrius Bell was ready to take on the role.
Well, 60 minutes into the NFL season we’ve already learned that isn’t the case. Not even close. To say Bell was awful would be too generous. He had one of the worst games by any Bills linemen in team history. He got beat for two sacks. He had three penalties and was basically thrown around like a rag doll all game long. Had Trent not showed some mobility and threw a couple of passes to the sidelines Bell could’ve given up several more.
Add this to the laundry list of things Jauron should have to answer for. While he isn’t physically on the field making plays, it was his decision to put Bell at left tackle and Walker on the unemployment line. I can’t fathom Walker could’ve played that bad. In large part for that alone, Jauron is plenty responsible for this loss.
Anyone missing Jason Peters right now?
Steve Johnson, Drayton Florence, Ellis Lankster, Ashlee Palmer, Kirk Chambers, Derek Fine, Chris Ellis..
Mildly surprised at Steve Johnson being inactive, especially with Jenkins released earlier today. That leaves Buffalo with four receivers (Evans, Owens, Reed, Parrish). Pretty frustrated over Ellis being dumped instead of Denney. We already know what Denney (and Kelsay for that matter) does; when are we gonna see what Ellis has?
 A pair of Niagara fall performers earned conference accolades on Monday. Men’s soccer senior goalkeeper John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, while volleyball’s Kari Honomichl (Petersburg, Mich.) claimed MAAC Rookie of the Week.
This marks the first honor of the 2009 season for Fiutowski, second overall, and the second time Honomichl has been honored in the first three weeks of the year as the league’s top rookie.
Fiutowski had a solid week in goal for the Purple Eagles in two games at the prestigious 34th annual Stihl Soccer Classic hosted by Old Dominion. Fiutowski faced a barrage of shots in NU’s opening match of the Classic against Old Dominion. He made nine saves in the narrow 1-0 defeat to the Monarch. In the second place match, Fiutowski made seven saves with many of them coming late in the final minutes to preserve Niagara’s 1-0 victory over William and Mary. He had a 0.50 goals against average and .941 save percentage for the week.
Honomichl played in three matches this week, helping Niagara to a 2-1 weekend. She averaged 4.64 kills per set and 2.09 digs per set at the Crosstown Classic. The rookie totaled 33 kills and a .459 attacking percentage in a pair of wins on Sunday. She also had 21 kills, 13 digs and three service aces against Lehigh. Overall, Honomichl currently ranks second in the MAAC with 4.31 kills per set.
 The Bills have announced that Jonathan Stupar has been added from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. To make room for his spot the club released wide receiver Justin Jenkins.
With Derek Fine out of tonight’s game with a hamstring injury, the team had only two healthy tight ends in Derek Schouman and Shawn Nelson, who’s playing in his first NFL game.
Jenkins was a third-year pro from Mississippi State. He’s never had a reception but was considered a stand out on special teams.
Jason LaCanfora of nfl.com reports via his twitter that injured New England wide receiver Wes Welker is expected to play tonight against Buffalo.
Welker has been nursing a knee injury and was limited in practice over the past week.
Not good news for Buffalo. The last time Welker played against the Bills at home in 2008, he had nine receptions for 107 yards in a 20-10 Patriots win.
 In only his second career start at quarterback for the Bulls, Zach Maynard earned Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of Week honors for his standout performance against Pittsburgh on Saturday.
The sophomore signal caller threw for 400 yards and four touchdowns againstPittsburgh for the finest single-game performance in the Bulls’ Division I-A history. His 400 passing yards broke the record of 350 set by Randall Secky against Ohio in 2002. His four touchdown passes tied the Division I-A mark also held by Drew Willy.
Maynard completed 24-of-35 passes against the Panthers. His two favorite targets were Brett Hamlin and Naaman Roosevelt who combined to catch 18 passes for 306 yards. Hamlin had career highs of 12 catches and 149 yards. Roosevelt had six catches for a career-high 157 yards. Roosevelt added touchdowns of 67 and 54 yards.
Roosevelt was named Honorable Mention Wide Receiver Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards.
Through two starts this season, Maynard has gone 36-of-54 for 559 yards, five touchdowns and only one interception.
 When linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa visited the Bills this summer, only to leave without a contract and eventually sign with the Chicago Bears, many fans were despondent. At the bare minimum, Tinoisamoa was considered an upgrade over Keith Ellison. Hell, according to a lot of Bills fans, Cornelius Bennett could come back today at 44-years old and be an upgrade.
Fans who clamored for Pisa and have malice in their souls may be little less peeved today. While the football world is talking about the Brian Urlacher wrist injury that will force him to miss the rest of the season, Tinoisamoa was injured himself, spraining the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He could be out for at least a few weeks.
The early verdict on “linebackers who visited but didn’t sign here” front isn’t all rosy. The Bills quietly coveted Mike Peterson. He signed with Atlanta. He was dominant in his debut against Miami, forcing a fumble and picking off a pass to go with seven tackles.
Ellison has two interceptions, and hasn’t forced a fumble in 42 career games. Tonight would be a good time to change that.

 When you lose 16 times in 17 tries against one team, as the Buffalo Bills have done with the New England Patriots this decade, things don’t look particularly good. From what I’ve seen and heard, not since 2001 has there been lower expectations in Buffalo, when the team delivered with a 3-13 record.
Tom Brady is back, and the Patriots are once again the fashionable pick to win the AFC East and return to the Super Bowl.
Still, the Patriots are beatable. Perhaps playing them in week one, albeit on the road, could actual be beneficial. Maybe the Patriots aren’t quite firing on all cylinders just yet. Maybe Brady is rusty. Maybe the defense is still adjusting to all its new starters. A great deal about the Patriots is a great unknown.
To find out more, I had a chance to interview Alan Poirier, a long-time New England fan and one of the more unbiased and knowledgeable football guys I’ve encountered in a long time.
I went digging for more information about the Patriots, their strengths and weaknesses and how to beat them, and this is what Alan had to say:
Going into tonight’s game, if you’re the New England Patriots, what is your biggest concern?
 You can say what you want about Terrell Owens. He likes to talk. Sometimes he talks too much. Sometimes, he talks to the point that ignorant, former New England cheap-shot artist players turned NBC analysts, jokingly or not call for bounties on his head.But if nothing else, at least when it comes to playing on Monday nights, T.O. backs it up.The “T.O. Show” just wrapped up it’s first season on Monday nights on VH-1. The Buffalo Bills are desperately hoping for an encore performance tonight.
As Rochester Democrat & Chronicle Bills writer Sal Maiorana points out on his twitter, Owens comes to play on Monday night football. During his career, he’s played on the big stage 24 times. In the span, he’s caught 101 balls for 1,553 yards and 19 touchdowns.
The last time Owens played against New England was as a member of the Dallas Cowboys, on October 14, 2007. In that contest (a 48-27 New England win), Owens caught six passes for 66 yards in a touchdown.
By comparison, Randy Moss also caught six balls for 59 yards and a touchdown. At the very least, Owens much match Moss tonight. Hopefully that doesn’t entail Owens needing four touchdowns, as Moss scored against the Bills in a single game in 2007.
If the Bills have any shot tonight, it’s highly likely it includes a big game from Owens. The offense looked pathetic throughout the preseason, but keep in mind Owens was on the field for all of two drives.
Regardless, the T.O. era officially begins in a few hours. If his past prime time performances is any indication, it may be memorable.
 You’ve waited nine long months for this night and it’s finally here. Tonight, the Bills go into Foxboro to take on the Patriots (and that whiny lil’ bastard Tom Brady).
You’re at a fevered pitch. If you even bothered to go to work today, odds are you’re sporting that new Terrell Owens jersey of yours. Spreadsheets and phone calls have been replaced by clock gazing and daydreams of your favorite alcoholic beverage.
While I’ll be slammin’ down a few of my own watching the big game, I want to remind you Bills fanatics of one thing– Don’t forget to eat!
Since we’re opening in Boston, on the menu for opening night is New England Clam Chowdah, or Chowdaaaaahh– however the hell you Bostonians pronounce it.
OK, I’ll be honest with you. This is my first time making New England Clam Chowder in September. Actually, this is my first time making New England Clam Chowder ever, but don’t you worry about that, kitten. The Unemployed Chef does not disappoint. With a long, prosperous career as an Unemployment Collector, I have plenty of time to master and tweak each recipe before I present it to you. You know, so when you ‘re tailgating or showing off your dish at the big house party, no one can say your “chowdah” tastes more like “manchowdah” (although you can always retaliate with, ‘Why the F do you know what that tastes like?’ Awkward pause.)

 When the Bills take the field tonight at New England, they’ll be doing it with the following 53 guys. There were a few shocking roster cuts, most notably Langston Walker and Dominic Rhodes. Unfortunately, at least according to the vast majority of fan’s I’ve spoken to since, there weren’t enough of them (Yes, I’m talking to you Chris Kelsay).
The list doesn’t include Marshawn Lynch, who’ll be suspended for the first three games, or James Hardy, placed on the PUP list and ineligible to return until week six.

 The Buffalo Sabres have announced the resigning of restricted free agent forward Drew Stafford to a two-year, $3.8 million deal. He’ll earn $1.5 million this year and $2.3 next season.Stafford scored a career-high 20 goals and had 45 points for the Sabres last year in 79 games. He notched multiple points 12 times and his season was highlighted by a hat trick against Edmonton on January 12.Stafford,a first round draft pick in 2004 has totaled 110 points in 184 games. He could potentially be on the team’s first line with Thomas Vanek and Derek Roy when the regular season begins October 3rd against Montreal.
In other Sabres news, the Buffalo News is reporting that former Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters is attending the New Jersey Devils training camp and is trying out for the team. Buffalo didn’t pursue Peters when he became a free agent after last season.
 The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team traveled to DePaul University to close out the Marquette Invitational against the home Blue Demons on Sunday. With the contest tied 1-1 through the break, the Blue Demons scored four unanswered goals in the final 16 minutes to capture a 5-1 victory. Senior forward Dan Bulley recorded the Bulls’ lone tally, his first of the season.
The Blue Demons went on the board first off their first shot of the game at the 13-minute mark. Steffen Vroom netted his third goal of the season with a right upper 90 shot off a pass from Antonio Aguilar to put the Blue Demons in the lead 1-0.
Down by one, Bulls’ defender Casey Derkacz dropped a perfectly-placed corner kick into a crowd of blue and white jerseys. Bulley went aerial, heading the ball past the Blue Demons’ keeper to tie the contest, 1-1 at 37:30.
With 26 seconds remaining in the first half, Nick Fetterman came up with a save to keep the game tied up heading into the break.
Through the first half and most of the second half, the Bulls played a well-balanced attack by protecting their goal and developing an offensive presence in the DePaul end. “In the first 74 minutes, we played a well-fought contest. We were focused and played a well-balanced game,” added head coach John Astudillo.

 Former Canisius College men’s lacrosse standout Matt Friedman was selected in the sixth round of the National Lacrosse League Draft by the Buffalo Bandits.
Friedman played in 45 games with 34 starts on defense during his career. The Buffalo native totaled two points (one goal and one assist) and picked up 43 ground balls in his four seasons. During his senior campaign, Friedman played in 12 games, recording 10 ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Friedman marks the third-straight season that Canisius has had at least one selection in the NLL Draft. In 2007, Kevin Ross was drafted in the first round, while Brad Favero was a fifth-round selection and last year, the Calgary Roughnecks selected Eric Lamothe in the fifth round. In addition to Ross, former Griffs Mark Miyashita (2003), Matt Vinc (2005) and Dan Carey (2005) have also been picked in the first round.
 It is hard to imagine what it would take for Dick Jauron and the Buffalo Bills to win their opener tonight at New England, but it would help if the head coach put a little fire and imagination into the game plan. The fans in Buffalo have waited too long to see another 7-9 season. What is interesting to me is that players themselves still seem to have a lot of confidence in this guy. So maybe I just don’t know Dick.
As a former player, I was privy to what happened in our team meetings where the head coach would give us pats on the back one day and fire and brimstone the next. I was lucky to have a very motivational and inspirational head coach. In our closed door meetings, Chuck Knox used to tell us “You’re never as bad as the press makes you out be……and you’re never as good as they make you out to be.” He was right. But one of the hardest things for a player to do is forget about the last bad play, or the last bad game, or the last bad season.
These Bills players need to get a bad case of Alzheimer’s….and fast.
This is where a keen head coach also needs to be a good psychiatrist. Keeping players on an even keel through a 16-game schedule is a tough chore, but a good coach knows when and how to fire up the troops. Chuck had the ability to make us feel like it was us against the world. When game time rolled around we had a big chip on our shoulder and couldn’t wait for someone to try and knock it off. Chuck was the kind of coach that made you feel confident going into battle. He was the General leading the charge…. willing to die for us.
Maybe Dick is telling the players something in those meetings that inspires them too. Maybe he’s got a bag of tricks up his sleeve that he hasn’t shown us yet. I hope he does, because I can’t bear to watch his “Deer in the headlights”, “fish out-of-water”, “Michael Jackson zombie-eyed” face for another season ……unless of course they are winning.
