NU Volleyball Drops Rival Canisius In Four

Posted on October 16, 2009 by BSD Staff Reports

The Niagara volleyball team (14-6, 7-2 MAAC) extended its win streak to five matches with a four set road victory over cross-town rival Canisius (8-11, 5-4 MAAC) on Thursday night, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16. With the win, Niagara broke the school record for conference wins in a season with seven.

“This win was important because it gave us separation from the rest of the pack at the halfway point of the season,” Niagara head coach Susan Clements said. “There’s still a lot of matches left to be played, but to pick up a road win against a rival was huge.”

Sophomore Hannah Hedrick (Cincinnati, Ohio) dominated the match at times and came away with her fifth-straight solid performance. The outside hitter recorded her career-best 16th double-double with a match-high 22 kills to go along with 12 digs. She only committed four hitting errors in 47 attempts for a hitting percentage of .383.

The Purple Eagles outhit the Golden Griffins 63 kills to 40, while besting their rivals in blocks with 7.5 to 3.0.

Sophomore Kathy Bibler (Bowling Green, Ohio) added 14 kills and two blocks for Niagara, while her position mate Amanda Wilken (Cincinnati, Ohio) totaled six kills and a match-best four blocks, including one solo. Freshman Kari Honomichl (Petersburg, Mich.) contributed 11 kills and six digs in the win, while junior Shannon Ryan (Fairport, N.Y.) chipped in with seven winners and nine digs.

Sophomore setter Michelle James (Cincinnati, Ohio) totaled 51 assists and 12 digs for the Purple Eagles. Classmate Sam Morgan (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied 17 digs to extend her double-figure dig streak to 50 matches.

The team’s 14 wins are the fourth-most in the history of the program. The 1993 and 1983 teams each posted 19 wins, and the 2005 team won 16 matches. The Purple Eagles 7-2 mark in conference play pits them in second place at the halfway point of season, one half game behind Fairfield and two full games ahead of Canisius.

The Purple Eagles return home for a weekend double-header against Saint Peter’s and Manhattan on Saturday and Sunday.
