Local College Saturday Sports Wrap

VOLLEYBALL

The Erie Community College women’s volleyball team dropped a four-game match Saturday afternoon in the Western New York Conference semi-finals to host Niagara County Community College.

The conference tournament seeding had to be re-seeded late Friday when it was determined that second-seeded Jamestown Community College had used an ineligible player in 14 matches earlier this season. The resulting forfeits moved Erie up from the third seed to the second seed and gave them a bye into the semi-finals.

Erie opened their tournament with 7-0 run to lead game one against the Trailblazers. They were unable to hold their lead and Niagara eventually pulled even at 17-17. The Lady Kats then pulled back ahead 21-17 before seeing Niagara tie the game back up at 21-21.

Buff State Football: Rowan Rolls, 57-7

  • Posted on October 24, 2009 at 6:51 pm

Rowan (6-1/5-1) scored on the second play from scrimmage and limited Buffalo State (1-6/1-5) to just 44 yards of total offense, cruising to a 57-7 victory over visiting in an NJAC contest today at John Page Field.

The Profs racked up 422 yards of offense and forced the Bengals to minus-32 net rushing yards on the day and capitalized on a 30-point second quarter to race to the win. Rowan has scored 252 points in its last four games.

Ryan Leafy led a balanced Rowan attack with 10 carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Frank Wilczynski was 9 of 16 for 119 yards and a touchdown and also had seven rushes for 58 yards and scored once on the ground.

Paetsch to make season debut for Sabres tonight

  • Posted on October 24, 2009 at 5:14 pm

According to John Vogl of the Buffalo News, Buffalo Sabres defensemen Toni Lydman (groin) was too sore to make it through the morning skate, and Nathan Paetsch will get his first start of the season tonight.  The Sabres are in Tampa Bay to take on the Lightning.

Paetsch has been a healthy scratch for all 7 Sabres games this season.  Last year, he appeared in 23 games, scoring twice and adding four assists.

The Sabres are off to a 5-1-1 start and are perfect on the road.  The teams split last season’s series, 2-2 and Buffalo has won 7 of the last 10 meetings between the clubs.

Ryan Miller is expected to get the start in net again tonight for Buffalo.

Pirates still searching for first road win

  • Posted on October 24, 2009 at 12:33 pm

Portland PiratesThe Norfolk Admirals seemed like the right opponent for the Portland Pirates to get their first road win of the season, but Brandon Bochenski and the Admirals had other plans, as they defeated the Pirates, 4-2, in front 3,033 on Friday night.

The loss left the Pirates still looking for their first road win of the season, falling to 0-6-0 on the road this season.

Norfolk have had their own troubles this season with a 2-4-0 record coming into the game tonight and a power play that’s ranked last in the AHL at 4.3 percent (1-for-23).

The Unemployed Chef: Big-Ass Turkery Burger

  • Posted on October 24, 2009 at 8:05 am

First and foremost, I’d like to apologize for this post’s delay. A squirrel or something ate my internet cable, and its been down since Friday. I hope that squirrel at least wrote up a recipe for that shit. The perfect tailgate meal: Electrical cords. With a side of acorns. Sounds delicious! Bastards.

If anything, this no-internet delay has forced me to humble myself. Yes, I am 100% dedicated to you guys as the official BSD Tailgate Blogger…but I am from NYC. Which makes me a Jets fan. Which makes this post an entire conflict of interest.

When I first started drafting this post, it was extremely difficult to keep my shit-talking to a minimum. Then Sunday happened. Ouch. After the Jets’s losses in New Orleans and Miami (that was a close one, though), I really thought we had this one in the bag. I guess you guys can thank Sanchez for bringing you up to 2-4. And I’ll leave it at that.

All I can say is that it’s ON for 12/03. But I still feel like an ass.

Which leads me to this week’s recipe… (Scroll down to witness the ass reference)

Requiem for a Talley

  • Posted on October 24, 2009 at 8:04 am

When it came to consistency, toughness and leadership, few if any Bills did it  better than Darryl Talley.  At Buffalo Sports Daily, we’ve made it our mission to spread the word to fans and Hall of Fame voters that the team’s all-time leading tackler is deserving of Hall of Fame consideration.

While Talley is an underdog to get enshrined, it’s ridiculous to not at least include him in serious conversation.  He never missed a game in his 12 seasons with the Bills, and to a man; Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith, Jim Kelly and all the former greats have said it— Talley was the heart and soul of those dominant AFC Championship teams.

Check out this video created by our resident videographer Jerry Noworyta.  For anyone who remembers this era, it’s sure to send chills down your spine.  Do you think the current edition of the Bills could use a little of this?

- “I had a guy when I was an assistant at Xavier, David West. That’s how we look at Andrew — St. Bonaventure’s David West.”

Those are choice words that Coach Mark Schmidt uses to describe the Bonnies post Andrew Nicholson. The sophomore has definitely come a long way from being a recruiting afterthought.

After an ankle injury during a key recruiting period had kept him out of the some of the major summer tournaments before his senior year of high school, he flew under the radar for many schools. St. Bonaventure assistant coach Jeff Massey happened to see Nicholson at an open gym at his high school Father Goetz that fall and informed Coach Schmidt of his find. Not long after seeing him, Schmidt new that he had found a diamond in the rough.

Four Griffs Named to Team Canada Roster

  • Posted on October 24, 2009 at 6:00 am

Four former and current Canisius College men’s lacrosse players have been named to the defending world champion Team Canada’s roster for the 2010 Men’s Lacrosse World Championship. Canisius graduates Angus Dineley, Kevin Ross and Matt Vinc plus current Griff Adam Jones were all named to the Team Canada roster.

The four Canisius standouts are among the 30 players selected to the national team. Canada, who won the 2006 championship, will defend its crown in July 2010 in Manchester, England.

Dineley played for the Griffs from 2004 to 2007. He appeared in 39 games with 28 starting assignments and ranks fifth in school history with 306 career saves, fourth with a .528 career save percentage and third with a 9.63 goals against average. During the 2005 campaign, Dineley recorded a save percentage of .595, the ninth-best mark in the NCAA.

Late Geneseo Goals Sinks BSU Women’s Soccer

  • Posted on October 24, 2009 at 5:30 am

Geneseo (10-4-1/4-3-1) netted the game-winner with just 1:45 remaining to defeat host Buffalo State (6-4-5/4-3-1), 2-1, in a SUNYAC contest Friday at Coyer Field.

Eileen Coyle slipped the ball inside the left post after taking a nice feed from Stephanie Bergin in the closing minutes to regain the lead for the Knights. Geneseo had taken the lead in the first half on a goal by Jane Matejcik, but Buffalo State netted the equalizer on a 46-yard free kick by Kristina Boberskyj (Rochester/Greece-Odyssey) in the 85th minute.

Flynn contributes to a much needed Timberwolves Win

  • Posted on October 23, 2009 at 1:07 pm

Niagara Falls high school alum Jonny Flynn and the  Minnesota Timberwolves gave pro-basketball fans in Minnesota something to be excited about last night.  Flynn and his teammates traveled to Detroit to take on the Pistons in The Palace of Auburn Hills and walked away victorious, 122-114.

Flynn played one of the best games he has had since joining the Timberwolves roster earlier this summer. Although the Timberwolves were down three at the half and quickly allowed the spread to grow in the third quarter, Flynn and the rookie roster (both Kevin Love and Al Jefferson sat the game out) regrouped and came out swinging. Analysts have commented that despite Flynn’s talent, the young star needs the leadership of older, experienced players like Love or Jefferson… last night quieted those voices.

Bills may catch a little injury break themselves Sunday

  • Posted on October 23, 2009 at 10:23 am

panthers1The Bills have been ravished with injuries since the first week of the season.  When they take on the Carolina Panthers this Sunday, they may actually catch an injury break of their own.

According to the Carolina Observer, Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis missed practice Thursday with a sore hamstring. Per the article, Coach John Fox wouldn’t say how serious the injury is, or when Davis hurt it

Davis is leading the Panthers in tackles this season with 48.  He also 1.5 sacks and an intereception.  If he can’t go, this could help a Bills’ offense that has dealt with plenty of injuries and adversity of their own.

Ryan Fitzpatrick will be making his first Bills’ start in place of injured (head) quarterback Trent Edwards.  Jamon Meredith will be making his second consecutive start at right tackle for Jonathan Scott (ankle).

Fantasy Friday: Nothin could be finer than the backs in Carolina

  • Posted on October 23, 2009 at 9:19 am

The Buffalo Bills’ defense has been a red carpet for opposing running backs, and it’s only going to get worse Sunday at Carolina.

Nobody needs to be told to start DeAngelo Williams, but it would be good idea to have Jonathan Stewart in your lineups, too.

Last week, as the Bills were being trampled to the tune of 318 yards, the Panthers’ pair of first-round draft picks totaled 262 yards and three touchdowns, with Stewart accounting for 110 yards on 17 carries. Can you say mismatch?

The Bills can show some game on the ground, too, since the Panthers are 29th in the league against the run. Marshawn Lynch has become the clear choice between him and Fred Jackson; over the last two weeks, Lynch has gotten over 20 touches a game to Jackson’s 15 in each, and Beast Mode has outgained him, 197 to 99. Jackson’s second-class status is confirmed by the fact that he’s become the primary kick returner.

Kane Chronicles: The “Miley Cyrus of Hockey” ?

  • Posted on October 23, 2009 at 7:09 am

It’s been an exciting first few weeks for South Buffalo native Patrick Kane and his Chicago Blackhawks’ teammates. Chicago is off to a decent start, currently third in the Western Conference with 11 points and a 5-3-1 record. Kane has been a huge factor towards achieving that success, leading the team in shots on goal with 32. Chicago itself is second in the NHL in shots. And like Wayne Gretzky famously said “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Kane is also second on the team in assists (5) and points (8).

There’s been quite a few Kane/Hawks stories flying around the world wide web during this October, here’s some of the best.

NU Hockey Narrowly falls to #5 Michigan, 3-2

  • Posted on October 23, 2009 at 7:00 am

The Niagara men’s hockey team (0-3-1) pushed the No. 5 Michigan Wolverines (2-1-0) to the brink, but in the end couldn’t pull off the upset, falling 3-2 on Thursday night at Yost Arena.

With the Purple Eagles down 3-2 and desperately looking for the game-tying goal, Niagara buzzed around the net and Wolverines netminder Bryan Hogan. Niagara had a few chances at tying the game, but were unable to light the lamp.

“Our third period is typically our worst, but tonight was different,” head coach Dave Burkholder said. “We outshot the Wolverines, had several big chances and were playing the body well.”

Bulls Look to Crash Western Michigan’s Homecoming

  • Posted on October 22, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Buffalo is set to travel to Western Michigan in a highly-anticipated MAC matchup Saturday at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo.

“We are excited and ready for the opportunity to play another football game,” said head coach Turner Gill.

The Bulls (3-4, 1-2 MAC) are coming off a 21-17 win over Akron. It is the second straight victory for the Bulls.

“It’s a big positive to get two wins in a row,” said Gill.

UB’s win over Akron marked a big improvement from the Bulls’ defense. They were able to come away with three big turnovers, two of which were in the red zone.

Parrish Frustration Boiling Over

  • Posted on October 22, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Roscoe Parrish may not currently have a role with the Buffalo Bills, but he certainly still has a pulse.

Speaking with Bills.com reporter Chris Brown earlier today, Parrish let loose over his frustration on being shelved last week in New York and the high probability he’ll be doing the same in Carolina on Sunday.

Among his very candid comments, Parrish had this to say.

  • Posted on October 22, 2009 at 2:54 pm

With only three weeks remaining in the Harvard Cup’s regular season, time is running out for teams to make a final push for the four playoff positions.  Currently, there are five teams legitimately in the running for the final two playoff spots with Burgard and Riverside all but locking up the top two positions.

While anything can happen in the Harvard Cup League and usually does, the game this weekend with the most immediate impact on the standings is also the Intense Milk Harvard Cup Radio Game of Week on 1440 AM WJJL.  Lafayette takes on the improving South Park Sparks, and the winner can almost control its own destiny in the season’s home stretch.

Nicholson named A-10 Preseason All-Conference

  • Posted on October 22, 2009 at 12:46 pm

St. Bonaventure men’s basketball sophomore forward Andrew Nicholson has been named to both the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference second team and All-Defensive team, announced during the league’s annual media day on Thursday.

Nicholson is the first Bonnie since 2005-06 to garner any kind of A-10 preseason accolade. The Mississauga, Ontario native is the eighth player in program history to earn preseason All-Conference status and just the fourth to be named to the All-Defensive team.

The reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year, Nicholson exploded onto the scene in 2008-09, averaging 12.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game. Nicholson led all A-10 rookies in six different categories, while ranking 11th and 12th in the nation, respectively, in blocks (81) and field goal percentage (.602). His .602 clip from the field established a new program single-season record, while his 81 blocks were the fourth most by an A-10 freshmen in league history.

Bona: Men’s soccer prepares for A-10 weekend in Philly

  • Posted on October 22, 2009 at 10:53 am

Off to a strong start in Atlantic 10 play, St. Bonaventure men’s soccer looks to extend its two-game win streak this weekend as the team heads to Philadelphia for a pair of conference matchups.

The Bonnies currently own an overall 6-5 record, matching the 2002 season record after 11 games. Through the last nine conference contests, dating back to 2008, the Bonnies are 6-3, under fifth-year head coach Mel Mahler.

The biggest difference in St. Bonaventure’s strong start in A-10 play has been the play of the front line and senior Sam Maheu. Both conference wins have come with the Bonnies scoring two or more goals. In their first three conference games, they have scored a combined six goals compared to last season’s two through three games.

T.O. opens up… a little bit

  • Posted on October 22, 2009 at 10:23 am

Even if Terrell Owens won‘t confess, he knows it was supposed to better than this.  It doesn’t matter Buffalo was the only team that showed serious interest when he became a free agent this summer; things were supposed to go better.

Owens with Lee Evans was to be a deadly combination.  Who were defenses going to focus on?  Add a budding Pro Bowler at running back in Marshawn Lynch, and Trent Edwards was prepared to bust out in 2009.  Owens expected to be the catalyst for an offense ready to explode and end a nine-year playoff drought. I mean, surely his signing was more than a $6.5-million marketing ploy by Russ Brandon, no?
