Montclair State (5-1/5-0) limited Buffalo State (1-5/1-4) to just 93 yards of total offense in a 23-7 victory in an NJAC game today at Coyer Field

Naaman Roosevelt
The Buffalo football team overcame a fourth quarter deficit and stormed back to claim a 21-17 victory over visiting Akron on a record-setting day for senior wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt. The win was the second straight for the Bulls, who improved to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the MAC in front of 13,750 fans at UB Stadium.
Roosevelt caught a career-high 12 catches for 100 yards, but none was bigger than a 16-yard strike from sophomore quarterback Zach Maynard, while absorbing a huge hit, to take the ball to the Akron one-yard line, setting up a touchdown by Mario Henry with 5:59 left in the game. Maynard finished the game 20-of-35 passing for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns, giving him 13 touchdowns on the year.

The Portland Pirates wish they could play all 80 games at the Cumberland County Civic Center after dropping yet another decision on the road, this time to the Manchester Monarchs, 4-0, in front of 8,605 at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night.
For the second time in their last two road games, the Pirates failed to score a goal as the home team kept Portland off the board for sixty minutes.

It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. Injuries are a big part of playing in the NFL. When a starter gets hurt, a coach is forced to play someone who wasn’t good enough to make the starting lineup.
But the really good teams seem to find a way to overcome this. Having good depth at all positions is nearly impossible, but it’s important to have guys that can come in without too much of a drop-off in team performance.
Unfortunately, the Buffalo Bills have experienced a rash of injuries to key players that even the best teams in the NFL might not be able to overcome. Yeah, there are other factors, but it’s time to acknowledge that a big reason they’re not winning and will probably continue to lose is the loss of starting players like tackle Brad Butler, corner Leodis McKelvin, safeties Donte Whitner and Bryan Scott, and linebackers Paul Posluszny and Kawika Mitchell. Backup LB Marcus Buggs also went down last week. The word “decimation” comes to mind.

In an effort to bring you something a little bit different, I had a chance to catch up with The Falconer from Bird Watchers Anonymous and ask him what we should expect from the Atlanta Thrashers tonight.
Q1. What has been a pleasant surprise for the Thrashers so far this season?
Former Sabre Eric Boulton scored a point in his first two games, but I would say Evander Kane tops that. I argued he should go back to juniors during Training Camp, but so far he has his first NHL goal and NHL assist and is getting significant minutes on the PK with no PK Goals Against.

The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team has released its schedule for the 2009-10 campaign. The defending regular season co-champions of the Mid-American Conference will open the season on November 15 against Vermont at Alumni Arena.

The Bulls will play at Big Ten foe Purdue on Dec. 5 and Niagara on Dec. 9 before returning home to host Buffalo State on Dec. 12. A first-ever game at Wisconsin-Green Bay awaits the Bulls on Dec. 22.

It must be something in the water at the Cumberland County Civic Center, but the Portland Pirates remained undefeated on home ice with a 6-3 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack on Friday night.
It was also a night to remember for Tyler Ennis, who scored four points, including his first professional hat trick. Ennis had been held off the scoresheet for the first four games of the season, and he was relieved just score his first goal of the season.

* Sabres.com reports that the Sabres were all over the NY Islanders.
* Tyler Myers scored a goal and an assist to pace the Sabres over New York, as Buffalo News reporter John Vogl recounts.
* John Vogl of the Buffalo News also says that Islanders forward John Tavares takes center stage Friday night.
St. Bonaventure basketball fans can get their first look at the men’s and women’s basketball teams on Saturday, October 24, during “Select A Seat” day at the Reilly Center.
The event will be free and open to the public. The women’s basketball team will tip things off with a brown and white inter-squad scrimmage from 9:30-10:30 a.m. followed by 15 minutes of drills. While the women are playing, the men’s team will be signing autographs outside the Fast Break Club from 10:30-11. The men will then take the court for an “open” practice, while the women will sign autographs from 11-11:30.
The scrimmage and open practice will run in conjunction with the second annual “Select a Seat Day” where all Reilly Center upper level seats open for new season sales or seat upgrades will be marked. The Reilly Center Ticket Office will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to process requests.

The Niagara men’s soccer team suffered its first MAAC loss of the season with a 4-0 setback at defending MAAC regular season champion, the Loyola Greyhounds, on Friday afternoon.
“On the day Loyola was a better team and deserved to win,” head coach Dermot McGrane said. “We need to learn from this game, and then put it behind so that we can prepare to face Rider on Sunday.”
Loyola (5-6-1, 2-0-0 MAAC) scored all four goals in a 16-minute span, including three goals in the last 12 minutes of the first half. Niagara (4-7-1, 2-1-0 MAAC) was done in by some smooth finishing by the home team.

The Canisius College men’s soccer team scored two goals with just under three minutes remaining in the game to secure a 3-1 victory over host Rider on Friday afternoon. With the win, Canisius improves to 2-1-0 in the MAAC.
Senior Alan McGreal (Dublin, Ireland) led the Griffs with five points and two goals, including the game-winner, to go along with one assist on the afternoon. Junior Greg Anne (Rennselaer, N.Y.) also tallied a goal for Canisius.
Sophomore Adam Miller (Reading, Pa.) recorded a season-best eight saves in net to anchor the Canisius defense in victory.

Buffalo State (5-3-5/3-2-1) pushed its unbeaten streak to four games with a convincing 3-0 victory over Plattsburgh (8-4-2/3-4-2) in a SUNYAC game Friday at Coyer Field.
Barb Kiliszek (Depew/Lancaster) opened the scoring in the 17th minute with an unassisted tally, and Amanda Sauer (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) and Leighana Krzyzanowski (Ontario/Wayne Central) each scored in the second half to put the game out of reach. Kristina Boberskyj (Rochester/Greece-Odyssey) and Courtney Hilliker (Williamsville/Williamsville South) assisted on the second and third goals respectively.

The Bulls are set to host MAC rival Akron on Saturday afternoon at UB Stadium in search of their second straight win.
The Bulls (2-4, 0-2 MAC) are coming off a crushing 40-3 win over Gardner-Webb. Buffalo led 33-3 at halftime and never looked back.
“That was our best overall game we’ve played in a long time,” said head coach Turner Gill. “The guys played with great intensity, the execution was excellent, I liked where our passion was and I liked the way our coaches worked with them during the week and saw it translate into the game.”

St. Bonaventure University was scheduled to have men’s and women’s soccer games this afternoon against Dayton Univeristy. That didn’t happen.

Here is why. As an annual reminder, welcome to October in Western New York.
“Intense Milk Harvard Cup Radio Game of the Week”
Riverside Frontiers (4-1) vs. Hutch-Tech Engineers (2-2)
Saturday, October 17 – 12:30 @ All High Stadium
Radio 1440 AM WJJL, Internet Link Live and Archived:
It’s not a stretch to think that even with almost a month left in the Harvard Cup’s regular season campaign, this game can be construed as a “must win” contest for both of these teams. The Frontiers will try to keep pace with the undefeated Burgard Bulldogs in the race for first place, but can not really afford a loss at this juncture.

The New York Jets’ takeoff this season was scary, as they battered Matt Schaub all day with a vicious, attacking defense.
But their flight hasn’t been as smooth lately; they have only four sacks on the season, tied for fewest in the league. They were embarrassed last week at Miami.
Well, there’s no remedy like playing the Buffalo Bills. The Bills will start UFL-level tackles on Sunday. Demetrius Bell will be a dinner bell for Rex Ryan’s crew, and on the other side is Plan D: Jamon Meredith. Those are the bodyguards for the perpetually shellshocked Trent Edwards. You might want to look away every time he drops back to pass.

The Niagara volleyball team (14-6, 7-2 MAAC) extended its win streak to five matches with a four set road victory over cross-town rival Canisius (8-11, 5-4 MAAC) on Thursday night, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16. With the win, Niagara broke the school record for conference wins in a season with seven.
“This win was important because it gave us separation from the rest of the pack at the halfway point of the season,” Niagara head coach Susan Clements said. “There’s still a lot of matches left to be played, but to pick up a road win against a rival was huge.”

The undefeated in regulation (3-0-1) Buffalo Sabres play host to the New York Islanders (0-1-3), one of the NHL’s two winless teams (Toronto) tonight at the HSBC Arena. It’s the first of back to back home games for the Sabres, who face Atlanta tomorrow.
The teams evenly split last season’s four match ups, going 1-1 in each team’s arena.
The Islanders defeated the Sabres last year 4-2 at the Arena November 22 before Buffalo returned the favor in a shoot out 4-3 on December 27. Former Sabre Ales Kotalik led the Sabres with five points in three games versus the Islanders last season. Jason Pominville, Thomas Vanek, Jochen Hecht and Clarke MacArthur each scored a pair of goals. Goaltender Patrick Lalime faced the Islanders in three of the four meetings, going 1-2 with a 2.02 goals against average. Sean Bergenheim was the only Islander to score multiple goals against the Sabres last season, netting a pair.
It’s been an exciting first couple of weeks for Patrick Kane and his Chicago Blackhawks’ teammates. Chicago has a Western Conference leading 11 points and a 5-1-1 record. Kane has been a huge factor in that success, as he leads the team in shots on goal with 26, is tied with Patrick Sharp for the team lead in assists (4), and is second to Sharp in points with 7. There’s been quite a few Kane/Hawks stories flying around the world wide web during the first half of October, here’s some of the best.
Bear Market Business
The Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bears announced Wednesday a historic partnership between the two franchises, marking the first of its kind between an Original Six National Hockey League team and a founding franchise of the National Football League.

When the Buffalo Bills embarked on their 2009 campaign some six weeks ago, they did so with Brad Butler starting at right tackle. Butler had previously started 29 games in the NFL, but all came at right guard. Concern lingered about his lack of experience.
About a month later, at least in the eyes of the Bills organization, Butler’s experience would rival Brett Favre.
There will be yet another switcheroo in the Bills offensive line this week when they travel to East Rutherford to take on the New York Jets. It’ll be the fourth different line combination the Bills have started just six games into the season. This time, with Jonathan Scott injured and Kirk Chambers completely ineffective, Jamon Meredith will get his first NFL start at right tackle. Coincidentally, his first snap Sunday will also be the first of his career.

Portland Junior Pirates forward Oliver Wahlstrom, who playes for the Pee Wee Major 97’s, was recently at the TD Bank Garden in Boston, Mass. for a mini one-on-one tournament. He’s all of nine years old.
Of course, the big boy Portland Pirates are the AHL affliiate of the Buffalo Sabres.
Just in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past 24 hours, check out his goal. Watchin’, Darcy?

The Purple Eagles will welcome back then-Head Coach Frank Layden and NBA Hall of Famer Calvin Murphy, as well as many others from the team that reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in Niagara history. The obvious number one reason of course, is that Trent Edwards has flat-out stunk up the field on Sundays. But another reason to root for the Bills to draft University of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy may be more than just his strong arm or unsavory pocket poise.
Who wouldn’t want to see CBS cut away to shots of girlfriend Rachel Glandorf on Sundays following each McCoy touchdown pass?
We got the feeling most guys— and some women would go out of their way make sure the “City of Good Neighbors” made the future (perhaps) Mrs. Colt McCoy feel quite welcome.
For the record, Glandorf is more than just a pretty face. She’s also majoring in atheltic training at Baylor University and a journalist for CBS affiliate KEYE42-TV in Austin, Texas.
