The fairy tale start to J.P. Losman’s UFL season took a turn last night, one that Buffalo Bills fans are all too familiar with.
Losman led his 1-0 Las Vegas Locos into a showdown with the 1-0 Florida Tuskers. Since the UFL consists of only four teams (New York and California also have a franchise) this was already the lone battle of the unbeaten.
Brooks Bollinger is the former Jets, Minnesota, Dallas castoff quarterback of Florida. On Wednesday night he clearly outperformed the 2004 former Bills first round draft pick as Florida romped Vegas, 29-15.

The UB women’s volleyball team will be hosting their “Dig Pink” event on Friday, October 16 at 7:00pm in Alumni Arena. The main focus is to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. Proceeds this year will go to the Side-Out Foundation with 25% going to Mary’s Wig Room in Buffalo, NY.
This cause hits home for many of the members of the women’s volleyball team. Mothers, sisters, aunts, and close family friends have all been affected by this disease and with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the University at Buffalo is doing its part to help out.
“We are honored to be taking part in this great cause,” said head coach Todd Kress. “This is a disease that doesn’t discriminate and everyone has been affected one way or another. We urge all our fans to come on out on Friday night and where pink for this cause.”

Having been around Brian Moorman for years, Buffalo Bills special teams coach Bobby April can appreciate sound special teams play when he sees it. Last Sunday he saw one of the best punting performances of his career— and it wasn’t courtesy of Moorman.
Cleveland Browns punter David Zastudil had nine punts last Sunday. Seven of those were downed inside the 20. Three of them consecutively went inside the Bills 4-yard line. For his efforts Zastudil was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
April wasn’t the least bit surprised.
Sometimes the tale of a football season isn’t simply told in the wins and loss column. No, the story of an improving football team is in the work and progress put in each day in practice. Veteran coach Art Serotte once said, “More games are won and lost on Tuesday and Wednesday than on Saturday afternoons.”
If that adage is truly the case, look out for the “hard luck” Sparks. After running through the gauntlet of the Harvard Cup’s leading teams in the first half of the season, the South Park from the heart of Buffalo’s Southside could be a surprise team in the Harvard Cup playoff run if the Sparks play their hand correctly.

Just as Sabres fans were bracing for the worse in regards to the Thomas Vanek upper body injury suffered last night against Detroit, head coach Lindy Ruff sent a message that’s music to fan’s ears. Vanek is now only expected to miss a few days, rather than weeks.
“They thought he would feel a lot worse today, but he’s actually feeling a lot better,” Ruff told reporters following practice today. “He’s doing remarkably well which is good.. I wouldn’t even rule him out maybe for a game on the weekend, as well as he’s doing today.

I’m told Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner will attempt to practice today. Whitner has missed the past two weeks after suffering a thumb injury against the New Orleans Saints. The injury required surgery, which took place on September 28.
Whitner hopes to be able to return as the sliding Bills (1-4) go to East Rutherford Sunday to take on the New York Jets.

Will the real Trent Edwards please sit down? Out of the hundred questions swirling around the Stanford product this offseason, only one has been answered to date. Unfortunately, it’s the wrong answer to the right question: he’s not the quarterback of the future for Buffalo.
A lot of changes were made on the offensive side of the ball this past offseason. The offensive line was revamped, whether for better or for worse. The Bills’ most versatile weapon, Fred Jackson, was re-signed to a new contract. A legitimate starting receiver – what was his name again? – was brought in to draw coverage off of Lee Evans. The offensive coordinator, Turk Schonert, who apparently had attitude and communication issues with Edwards, was fired and the quarterbacks coach, Alex Van Pelt, was promoted. All of these were supposedly done to help the offense, whether anyone believed they were improvements or not.
If Buffalo Sabres fans’ prayers are answered, this will be the victory that will establish the Sabres as a top contender in the Eastern Conference. Buffalo dominated the Detroit Red Wings for the entire game Tuesday night, outshooting the Stanley Cup Finalists 38-28 and 18-4 in the second period, en route to a 6-2 victory.
The Sabres utilized the same style of surgical puck possession that carried this same Detroit team to consecutive Stanley Cup Finals the past two seasons, locking down a touted Red Wings offense with a deadly fore-check and great back pressure.Thomas Vanek netted two goals, and Derek Roy tallied three assists to lead the offense as the Sabres finally managed to convert their chances and broke the game wide open in the second period.
The St. Bonaventure women’s swimming and diving team lost to Penn State 174-60 on Tuesday afternoon in the Reilly Center Pool. Seniors Allison Smith and Kara Small had impressive finishes to add to the Bonnies’ score.
Small competed in the 1000-yard freestyle touching for a second-place finish at 10:46.99. She then put in another second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle just edging out Smith with a time of 5:15.53. Small also competed in the 200-yard breaststroke, picking up a second-place finish, clocking in at 2:32.05.

Ryan Abshagen may be a Bills fan who’s merely 18 years old, but he’s seen enough of the Buffalo Bills to conclude he doesn’t want Dick Jauron roaming his favorite team’s sideline. Contrasting to the majority of fans contempt to vent to in the living room, supper table, water cooler or local tavern, Abshagen took his disdain for Jauron a step further.
He created the website “FireDickJauron“. While the site helped spread its self explanatory message, apparently it wasn’t enough. He started a campaign soliciting donations to purchase a billboard on the Buffalo I-190 Interstate, specifically to let Ralph Wilson know what the fans think of a coach who’s won exactly 3 of his last 15 games.

Canisius College freshman Samantha Good was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. It’s the second time in the last three weeks that Good has received the honor.
In two Canisius road victories last weekend, Good led the Canisius offense by averaging 3.44 kills per set. Good had 13 kills and five blocks in the five-set win at Loyola – the fourth time this season Good has had 10 kills and five blocks in a match. The 5-foot-10 middle blocker then had a team-high 18 kills, the fifth time in six matches Good has led the Griffs in kills, to go along with three service aces and seven digs – both career highs – in the win at Rider. Thurman Thomas had a wood carving done of his likeness and as the story is well known by now, someone stole the carving of Thomas following the Bills game on Sunday against Cleveland. The carving weighed more than 1,000 pounds and stood greater than eight feet tall.
According to Patricia Thomas, wife of Thurman, the Orchard Park police report the carving has been found.
Niagara Falls high school alum Jonny Flynn joined the Minnesota Timberwolves this summer and has immediately stepped up to prove that despite being a lottery pick on the team, he came to the Land of 10,000 Lakes to work and won’t stop until he proves he deserves the starting spot that he has been given.
In the first preseason game for the Timberwolves on Sunday October 4th against the Milwaukee Bucks, Flynn not only was a part of the starting line-up, he also posted 14 points to the final score. When asked about his nerves stepping onto a NBA court for the first time, Flynn told a reporter, “You are just so anxious you want to go out there and make something happen right away but you have to be patient.”

After five weeks in the 2009 Harvard Cup season, there only seems to be one constant. Just past the halfway mark of the regular season, there are the Burgard Bulldogs, Riverside Frontiers and then everybody else.
The Bulldogs and the Frontiers took care of business in dominating fashion as the teams solidified their Number 1 and 2 positions in the standings respectively. The Blue Bulldogs outclassed their foes from East this past Saturday, while the Riverside crew pummeled the Grover Presidents in the Harvard Cup’s version of Friday Night Lights.

Did you know the Buffalo Bisons were within weeks of becoming a part of the American League way back in 1900? Yes, that’s correct; we were oh so close to becoming a Major League Baseball team permanently.
The Buffalo Bisons technically were a Major League Baseball team; part of the National League from 1879-1885. In 1886 the Buffalo Bisons moved into Minor League Baseball as member of the original International League. By the late 1890’s they moved to what was called the Western League, and were within weeks of becoming a Major League team when the International League announced it was changing over to the American League in 1900.

The Buffalo Bills have been a disaster on the field. At 1-4, including three straight losses they’re squarely headed towards a tenth straight season without making the playoffs. The defense is a M.A.S.H. unit, the offensive line is in shambles and their quarterback has fans clamoring for the return of J.P. Losman (yes, it’s that bad).
Even Terrell Owens is just “going with the plays that are called”. It’s gotten so bad their head coach has an approval rating that makes former President Bush feel like J.F.K.

First thing’s first: you’re welcome. Or rather, I apologize. Probably the latter. I did, in fact, re-watch enough of the Buffalo Bills’ 6-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns to both get enough for a Film Session discussion and make me viciously nauseous. I’ll let y’all take bets on how long it took me to get there. But either way, either you’re welcome for braving the film, or apologies for bringing the game back up. I, myself, am in the latter group; I apologized profusely and repeatedly to myself last night for making me do that.
After the jump: your Week 5 film session. Topics of discussion: Trent Edwards, his offensive line, Marshawn Lynch, the safety position, Keith Ellison and Brian Moorman.

In a way it’s a rite of passage. Local media, broadcasters, bloggers, etc rip into the Buffalo Bills. We have to see and hear from them on a daily basis, so aggravation tends to boil over and the media express themselves accordingly.
It’s made easy by the clear-cut fact the Bills are utterly awful in nearly every phase on and off the field. But it’s also customary to become defensive when vultures from the national media attack. It turns into one of those only we can make fun of them, not you kind of deals.
Chris Mortenson is a textbook reason why.

After leading the Canisius College hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Ferris State, sophomore Dan Morrison was honored by Atlantic Hockey on Monday, earning the league’s Player of the Week and Goaltender of the Week accolades.
Morrison stopped a career-best 48 shots in the victory. His 48 saves are the most for a Griff in a shutout since moving to Division I. Sean Weaver held the previous standard with 46 against Mercyhurst on Feb. 4, 2000. The shutout was the second for Morrison in his career.

University at Buffalo freshman Stephanie Velez and senior goalkeeper Amy Coron earned this weeks Mid-American Conference Offensive and Defensive Women’s Soccer Player of the Week Awards based on their performances against MAC rivals Western Michigan and Northern Illinois this past weekend.
The women’s soccer team went 2-0 on the weekend, defeating Western Michigan, 2-1, on Friday night and shutting out Northern Illinois, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon. The weekend wins are the Bulls’ first in Mid-American Conference play as they improve to 3-10-1 (2-3-1 MAC).

Most people were hoping for a Monday afternoon Dick Jauron press conference. They got it, but not the type they were anticipating. Jauron is keeping his job, for now at least, and proceeded with his weekly presser. Here’s what came of it.
Injury update:
Kawika Mitchell and Marcus Buggs both suffered knee injuries that will require surgery. Both are done for the season, a huge blow to the defense particularly with Mitchell. The Bills now have two roster spots to fill.
Well all know the story by now. Ralph Wilson was scheduled to receive his Hall of Fame ring in a special halftime ceremony yesterday. Most media outlets, including Buffalo Sports Daily previously reported it. In fact, the Hall of Fame had it as the top story on their website, all the way through Sunday night.
The Buffalo Bills are 1-4. They’ve lost three consecutive games – two straight against teams that played Buffalo sans previous victory. Nothing – seriously, absolutely nothing – has gone right for this team in the past three weeks. Calls for change – in the front office, in the coaching staff, in player personnel – will almost certainly be rewarded come season’s end, if not sooner.
The Bills as a franchise have not been this low since the 5-11 2005 season – the year prior to Dick Jauron’s arrival in Buffalo. Or perhaps 2001 is better, when Buffalo finished 3-13 in Gregg Williams’ first season as head coach. How about 2000, when, in Wade Phillips’ last season, the Bills finished 8-8, starting a streak of ten full years in which the Bills did not make the playoffs? Yes, I’m counting this year’s Bills in that group, but I’d hardly consider that going out on a ledge.

Dick Jauron is not getting fired today. Just received a media alert that the Buffalo Bills announce Jauron would be available to the media at approximately 12:30pm today.
This means Jauron has not lost his job. Jauron addresses the media every week at around the same time on Mondays to give injury updates. Had he gotten his pink slip the release would’ve been different.
Sentiments had grown that Jauron would lose his job following the Bills 6-3 home debacle to Cleveland yesterday in which owner Ralph Wilson was on hand to witness everything. But for now at least, it looks like Jauron’s job as head coach is safe.
I can’t imagine what the reaction of fans is going to be. Last week, before the Browns game Jauron had an approval rating of 4%, “comical” according to ESPN.com writer Tim Graham.
The Portland Pirates have a lot of questions, but few answers for their early season woes.
After winning their first game of the season, 4-2, to Providence Bruins, Portland traveled to Lowell, Massachusetts for a Sunday afternoon game where they promptly laid an egg, falling 4-0 to the Devils in front of a meager crowd at Tsongas Arena.
“It was not a very good game,” said Pirates head coach Kevin Dineen. “The game plan wasn’t very good. They scored (their) goals off the rush, and this was nothing that we haven’t seen before from this team.”
