Strong special teams and a school-record third-consecutive shutout helped the Canisius College hockey team extend its unbeaten streak to six games, recording a 4-0 win over host American International on Saturday. With the win, the Griffs improve to 7-6-1 and 6-3-1 in Atlantic Hockey play.
The Griffs are now 5-0-1 in their last six games. The team’s six-game unbeaten streak is their longest since also going six games without a loss during the 2003-04 season.
Senior Andrew Loewen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) recorded 32 saves in net to extend the Griffs’ shutout streak. Canisius has not allowed a goal in its last 187:45 of play.

The Buffalo Sabres were playing their third game in four nights. After a good opening 20 minutes of hockey, they resembled a team that.. Was playing their third game in four nights.
Careless skating, inopportune penalties, a few weak goals and lazy puck movement all contributed to the Sabres 5-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators Saturday night.
After Thomas Vanek scored his seventh goal with under a minute left in the first period, the Senators threw up five unanswered goals past Patrick Lalime, who got his second start of the season in place of Ryan Miller.

The Niagara men’s basketball team (3-1) used a lock-down defense to earn its third-straight victory of the season on Saturday, 63-46 over Central Florida (3-1) at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Purple Eagles forced 23 turnovers and held the Golden Knights to 31.6 percent shooting from the floor.
“I am very proud of our team,” Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said. “We just beat a very good team (Saturday) and our team defense was the key.”
Niagara’s aggressive team defense set the tone from the opening tip. UCF was held off the scoreboard for the first four minutes of action and only connected on one field goal in the final five minutes of the first half.

The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team earned its second straight road win with a 78-69 overtime victory at Towson on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls shot nearly 60 percent from the field in the second half and overtime to pull out the win.
Buffalo (2-1) had four players score in double-figures led by Rodney Pierce who scored 18. Calvin Betts earned his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Mitchell Watt added 12 points and Jawaan Alston had his second strong game in a row with 11 points.
John Boyer had one of the finest all-around games of his career with five points, eight rebounds and a career-best 12 assists. His 12 assists tied for the 10th for a single game in school history.

The Buffalo Bills have begun their coaching search after firing Dick Jauron on Tuesday. Since that day, the Bills have been linked to two of the biggest names available in the coaching market; the team will meet with former Denver coach Mike Shanahan next week, and there are reports that Bill Cowher is on their short list as well.
According to a WIVB report, you can add Jon Gruden’s name to the list, too. Then you can go ahead and cross it off again.

As he watches the game on TV, a certain ex-Bills head football coach may be surprised to discover that run, run, pass, and punt does not win football games. In fact, punting is often not the focal point of any game plan that leads to victory. Unless, of course, you are the Cleveland Browns and your opponent is indeed Buffalo.
Sunday’s game against Jacksonville would appear to be much easier to win if it was in Buffalo. Jacksonville has not played well on the road compared to their home performances. David Garrard just threw his first touchdown on the road last week against the Jets, while throwing twice as many interceptions when traveling. On the other hand, Garrard has six touchdown passes and three picks at home. In addition, anyone can see from the minimal number of passing touchdowns and interceptions that Jacksonville’s quarterback does not take many chances.

The Niagara volleyball team picked up plenty of accolades at the All-MAAC Postseason Banquet on Saturday, which was held at Canisius College. The Purple Eagles picked up three major awards, including the 2009 Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year Award, which went to third-year head coach Susan Clements.
A pair of Purple Eagle sophomores also garnered major recognition, as Hannah Hedrick (Cincinnati, Ohio) collected 2009 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and Michelle James (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned 2009 MAAC Setter of the Year. Both student-athletes also earned First-Team All-MAAC.

A 35-6 run that stretched from the end of the first half through the opening 12 minutes of the second half helped the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team shake off a slow start en route to a 66-40 win over Binghamton on Friday night at the Reilly Center.
The 40 points giving up is the best defensive effort since Jan. 7, 1995, when the Brown and White held Appalachian State to 32 points at the Reilly Center. It also marks the first time the Bonnies have held a team under 50 points since an 84-44 win over Rhode Island in 2000.
The Bearcats managed just six points over 15 minutes and 41 seconds that crossed over from first to second half. The Bonnies forced 19 Binghamton turnovers that led to 22 points.

Canisius College men’s basketball coach Tom Parrotta announced that Chris Manhertz (Bronx, N.Y.) has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Golden Griffins’ roster for the 2010-11 season.
Manhertz is currently a senior at Cardinal Spellman High School in New York City. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound forward averaged 18 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks per game last season for the Pilots and head coach Fred Opper. An all-league selection, Manhertz received an overall rating of 80 is rated as the No. 152 power forward by Scouts, Inc. and ESPN.com’s college basketball recruiting tracker.

After a strong first period, the Buffalo Sabres fell off in the second and never got back up.
After a disheartening loss to the Florida Panthers Wednesday, Buffalo was hoping to get back on the winning horse tonight, and got an early lead in the first to start the night off. But after the first intermission, the Boston Bruins seemed to have the Buffalo scheme worked out, and attacked hard.
While the Sabres only gave up one goal that period, and for the rest of regulation, they never seemed to get back the upper hand. They killed the last period off, and 47 seconds into overtime allowed Patrice Bergeron’s first OT goal in three seasons. Paul Gaustad was Buffalo’s only scorer, at 4:20 into the first.

In the short-lived time since Buffalo Sports Daily has been launched, former Buffalo Bills great Darryl Talley has become our “go to” guy. He was the first prominent athlete we conducted a one-on-one interview with. In part, it’s because we consider him worthy of being in the NFL Hall of Fame conversation, and ensured more people would feel the same, as evidenced by our Jerry Noworyta’s brilliant Requiem for a Talley video.
So in the wake of the Dick Jauron firing bombshell this week, I thought it was only fitting to contact Talley and get his thoughts and insight. As stated in my previous interview with him, Talley is one of, if not the most underrated player to ever put on a Buffalo uniform. The franchise’s all-time leading tackler spent a dozen years in the organization as a player, and to this day has a heavy heart watching the Bills suffer defeats on Sundays.

The Niagara men’s basketball team (2-1) opened the Glenn Wilkes Classic with a victory over Howard (0-3) on Friday, 82-77. Four Purple Eagles tallied double figures in the win, and every player made at least one field goal in the first half.
Niagara scored 50 points in the first half while shooting 71.4 percent from the floor (20-for-28). The Purple Eagles, who led from start to finish, took a 50-37 lead into the break after all eight players connected on at least one shot from the floor.
Junior Anthony Nelson (Plainfield, N.J.) led the quartet of double-digit scorers with 18 points. The point guard shot 5-for-7 from the floor, inlcuding a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc, while adding five assists and four rebounds.

Patrick Kaleta’s role on the Buffalo Sabres since joining the team full time in 2007 has stayed pretty consistent, and has been pretty obvious. Hit hard, annoy people, draw penalties. And he’s been darn good at it too.
Since he’s arrived, Kaleta has led the league in penalties drawn for each 60 minutes played. As of now, he is at 5.6 per 60 minutes (around 1 every 10 minutes played). He is averaging 10 minutes and 6 seconds on the ice per game this year. Do the math there, and Kaleta is drawing around a penalty a game for a team that’s been pretty good at power plays this year. It’s a little known, but potentially game changing stat.
Combine into that Kaleta’s penchant for hitting anything that moves. Big hits rile up both the crowd and the team as much as a good fight, and can quickly rouse a slouching team.

The Buffalo Bills, led by interim head coach Perry Fewell, will be looking for a win in Jacksonville without the services of three key starters.
Marcus Stroud did not practice all week with a knee injury and has been ruled out, potentially leaving the Bills with just two healthy defensive tackles on Sunday. Also ruled out were tackle Demetrius Bell (knee), linebacker Keith Ellison (thigh) and cornerback Ashton Youboty (ankle).
Stroud’s absence is of critical importance. The Bills have the NFL’s worst run defense, and they’re about to take on the NFL’s fifth-leading rusher in Maurice Jones-Drew without their most proven run defender. Exacerbating that issue is the fact that fellow defensive tackle Kyle Williams is on the injury report as well, listed as questionable with a knee injury that has caused him to miss Buffalo’s last two games.

The Sabres were riding high coming into the Florida game Wednesday with good wins against the Calgary Flames and the Philadelphia Flyers. They were knocked off their high horse by a team they probably should have beat. This is the kind of thing we have seen from this team time and time again.
I tried really hard to find one positive the Sabres could take from this game and couldn’t do it. Some players were worse than others, but ultimately this was a team loss. A few players were singled out during the game. They just need to forget and move on. Unfortunately we had a day between games and that gives us time to further pick apart the losing effort.

Wednesday night the Minnesota Timberwolves took on the Houston Rockets at home in the Target Center. The game ended almost identically to the all of the games Jonny Flynn and the Wolves have been playing recently. They lost 97-84.
As a whole, the Wolves roster were sloppy and inconsistent. Flynn mirrored this, in 23 minutes of game time he scored just 9 points, one rebound and 3 turnovers. Not only could Flynn not find the hoop himself, he did not help the rest of the Timberwolves get there either, as evidenced by his 2 assists for the whole night. Al Jefferson came back to the roster after taking time off to be with his family following the death of his grandmother. Jefferson scored 20 points, posted 10 rebounds and had 4 assists with only 10 more minutes of playing time than Flynn received, an indication the rookie has a lot of learning to do.

As expected, after two and a half months of gridiron churning, the cream has risen to the top of the Harvard Cup title hunt. The first place Burgard Bulldogs and the defending champion Riverside Frontiers both advanced with playoff victories to the 106th Harvard Cup Championship Game on Thanksgiving Day at historic All High Stadium.
The two teams met back in September in Week 1 with the Blue Bulldogs prevailing by a score of 13-12. Since that meeting, a considerable amount of talk among Harvard Cup pundits focused that the remainder of the regular season was nothing more than a speed bump on the way to a Turkey Day rematch between the pair. For a change, the pundits were right.

The University at Buffalo utilized a gutty defensive effort to defeat Navy, 63-53, at Alumni Hall on Thursday night. The Bulls held the Midshipmen to 30 percent shooting, forced 18 turnovers and blocked six shots to even their record to 1-1 on the season. The win snapped Navy’s nine-game home court winning streak against non-conference opponents.
The Bulls had a balanced scoring effort led by Mitchell Watt who had 13 points and added six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Calvin Betts added 12 points, eight rebounds and a career-best four steals. John Boyer added 10 points and five rebounds.
Jawaan Alston was a spark early for the Bulls and had one of the finest games of his career. The junior forward just missed out on his first career double-double with nine points and a career-best 10 rebounds. With Titus Robinson on the bench in foul trouble, Alston played a career-high 31 minutes.

Sophomore Megan Van Tatenhove scored a career-high 18 points to lead the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team past Niagara 66-49 in an early afternoon matchup on Thursday during “Youth Day” at the Reilly Center.
St. Bonaventure survived its four games in six days, starting at 4-0 for the third consecutive season and the fifth time in program history. The Bonnies are now 2-0 against Big 4 rivals.
“Niagara played really hard, they executed their stuff, and they were still able to get the shots for their people where they wanted them to,” said head coach Jim Crowley. “I thought they did some things better than us, but we just found a way to put the ball in the basket a little bit more.”
The Bonnies shot 54 percent (28-52) from the field with Van Tatenhove leading going 9-of-14 from the floor. Senior Dana Mitchell hit double-digits with 15 points while sophomore Jessica Jenkins also hit double figures with 10 points.

This weekend will be a big weekend for the Jamestown Jets. They return home to face the Adirondack Predators after suffering losses in a pair of games last weekend to Team Ulysee in Quebec. The losses dropped Jamestown back to .500 with a 10-10-0 record.
The Jets are hoping a return home will be the recipe for success. They have a two game home winning streak after sweeping a weekend series with the Findlay Grrrowl at the beginning of November. “I think anytime you play at home, you expect to win and this weekend will be no different” Jets coach Dennis Canfield said.

In the latest USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Division I National Individual Rankings released this week, University at Buffalo sophomore Desi Green moves up to the 15th spot at 149 pounds as fellow sophomore Kevin Smith has earned the 20th spot at 133 pounds. This marks the first time in Smith’s career that he has garnered such national recognition.
Green has rattled off seven straight victories to hold a flawless overall record of 7-0 and 2-0 dual record to start the season. At the UB Open, Green captured the individual crown at 149 by posting five victories including two decisions, two technical falls and a fall.
In the Bulls’ 16-16 draw with Hofstra, Green defeated 20th nationally-ranked Justin Accordino in the opening match of the day. On the bottom, Green escaped from Accordino’s grip for a 3-2 lead. The sophomore was able to hold on for the decision to give the Bulls the lead to start the match.

Scoring the first interview with Ralph Wilson since the firing of head coach Dick Jauron on Tuesday, Wilson made it clear to Associated Press writer John Wawrow that changes around the entire Buffalo Bills operation could be becoming.
“I tell you, we have a lot of work to do,” Wilson told Wawrow. “We’ve got to revamp and take a look at the whole operation and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Many skeptics are not convinced Wilson will open up the vault to attract one of the marquee free agent coach’s available, a list that includes Bill Cowher, Brian Billick, Tony Dungy and Mike Shanahan, who’s already being linked to the Bills’ having interest.

The Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal-Sentinel is reporting that the Buffalo Bills have signed second-year quarterback Brian Brohm off of the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad. In order to complete the signing, the Bills must put Brohm on the active roster, meaning that Buffalo will need to release a player in order to complete the transaction.
It’s the second player the Bills have signed this year off Green Bay’s practice squad. They signed Jamon Meredith earlier this season following the season ending injury to Brad Butler.
Brohm was a second-round pick of Green Bay in the 2008 NFL Draft, selected No. 56 overall. He was the third quarterback selected in that draft class, behind Atlanta’s Matt Ryan and Baltimore’s Joe Flacco. One of the more prolific passers in the nation in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons at Louisville, the 6′4″, 228-pound Brohm threw for 10,775 yards, 70 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. At just 24 years of age, Brohm still has a considerable amount of unrealized potential.

What a disappointing way to snap a three-game winning streak. The Sabres came out strong early Wednesday night against the Florida Panthers, but after Drew Stafford potted his sixth goal of the season everything went downhill for the hometown team.
The Sabres lacked any sort of composure in their own zone, and frequently gave up odd man rushes and dangerous scoring chances. Ryan Miller, usually a pillar of strength for the Sabres was directly responsible for the Panther’s second goal due to a bad clearing attempt, and let five goals on only twenty three shots. Offensively, the Sabres flat out couldn’t finish their chances. Nearly every time they managed to outwork the Panthers and get the puck into a dangerous area it would bounce over the stick of the Sabres forward or find its way to a post, Florida player or Tomas Vokoun. And those opportunities did not come often.
