NU Drops Decisions in Hockey, Soccer

  • Posted on November 8, 2009 at 6:59 pm

The Niagara men’s hockey team (0-7-1, 0-0-0 CHA) played the No. 19 UMass Minutemen (6-1-0, 3-1-0 Hockey East) tight, but two late goals gave the Minutemen the 4-2 victory on Program Pioneers Day at Dwyer Arena.

On a day where Niagara was honoring the 1999-00 team that earned the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth, the Purps came out strong early. Senior Chris Moran (Buffalo, N.Y.), sent a pass low to fellow senior Ryan Olidis (Uxbridge, Ont.), who went behind the net and found senior Egor Mironov (Thornhill, Ont.) on the doorstep for the 1-0 lead six minutes into the first period.

Taking a peek at Buffalo’s remaining schedule

  • Posted on November 8, 2009 at 9:08 am

It’s the bye week for the Buffalo Bills, and no matter how comforting the fact that the Bills cannot lose this weekend is, a weekend without Bills football is still kind of a drag. We’ll equip you for the weekend ahead with prediction and open game threads for Week 9 football, but as it’s still only Saturday (the first week of a two-week layoff is always the longest), we’ll table that for the day and instead focus on taking a peek at the rest of the Bills’ schedule this season. The short version: as usual, the Bills have some very tough matchups.

Sabres Fall Again, 4-2 at Boston

  • Posted on November 7, 2009 at 10:53 pm

If this keeps up, that hot Buffalo Sabres start will soon be just a distant memory.

For the second time in 24 hours, the Sabres skated against an Eastern Conference power.  After getting outplayed and beaten at home by Philadelphia last night, Buffalo took their road show to Boston.  They were probably better off staying home.

The Sabres were again clearly outplayed as Boston defeated them, 4-2 in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated.  The loss is the third in the last four games for a Buffalo team that started the season 8-1-1.

Jhonas Enroth got his first career NHL start in goal.  Derek Roy scored for the Sabres for the third straight game.  Jason Pominville added the other goal. We’ll have much more on this game on Sunday morning.

Section VI Class AA Final: North Tonawanda 54, Lancaster 7

  • Posted on November 7, 2009 at 10:09 pm

In many ways, it  seemed fitting that Lancaster played this game at Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills.

The previously unbeaten Redskins run a no-huddle offense, engineered by a quarterback sporting uniform No. 5.  Sound familiar?

Whatever disease the Bills have on this turf must be contagious, because it spread like wildfire to Lancaster.

The Cheektowaga Warriors used a combination of a punishing ground game and ruthless pass rush en route to defeating Alden, 27-13 in the Section VI Class B final at Ralph Wilson Stadium today.  It was Cheektowaga’s (10-0) first ever sectional championship.

NU: No. 19 UMass Downs Men’s Hockey, 4-1

  • Posted on November 7, 2009 at 3:50 pm

The Niagara men’s hockey team (0-6-1, 0-0-0 CHA) put together a tough and gritty effort, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped a tightly contested 4-1 decision to No. 19 UMass (5-1-0, 3-1-0 HE) on Friday night at the Mullins Center.

“A lot of our game I like, even with the tight loss,” head coach Dave Burkholder said. “We hope to get a win over them in 48 hours.”

The Purple Eagles took a 1-0 lead 22 seconds into the second stanza, after a thunderous check at blueline by senior Egor Mironov (Thornhill, Ont.) kept the puck in the zone. Niagara kept cycling the puck, until Mironov put a shot on goal, with senior Ryan Olidis (Uxbridge, Ont.) scooping up the rebound and firing a backhanded shot past sprawling UMass netminder Paul Dainton for the lead.

Canisius’ McGreal Sets School Record in 2-1 Defeat

  • Posted on November 6, 2009 at 5:53 pm

Senior Alan McGreal (Dublin, Ireland) broke the program’s record for most career goals but the Canisius College men’s soccer team could not overcome a 2-0 deficit and lost to the host Gaels on Friday afternoon, 2-1. The defeat drops the Griffs, who are in a battle for the final MAAC Championship berth, to 4-4-0 on the season in conference play, while the first-place Gaels improve to 7-1-0 against MAAC foes.

McGreal’s goal gives him 35 for his career, surpassing the previous record set by Tony Burke, who scored 34 goals from 1993 to 1996. McGreal already holds the school records with 99 career points and 29 career assists.
Canisius, who entered the day trailing Niagara for the fourth and final playoff berth by one point, can still clinch a spot in the MAAC Tournament on Sunday. The Griffs need to beat Fairfield and have either Niagara earn one point in its final two games (at Fairfield and at Iona) or have the Purple Eagles defeat or draw Fairfield later on Friday.

Drew Rosenhaus Not Fond of the Bills This Year

  • Posted on November 6, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Terrell Owens is having one of, it not the worst year of his career in Buffalo.  Surprisingly, he’s yet to verbally throw anyone in the organization under the bus.  Sure, he’s offered up excuses, mainly injuries, but he’s not attacked anyone via a tongue lashing.

His agent, Drew Rosenhaus is unwilling to be as kind.  In a story that was originally published today by Pro Football Talk, Rosenhaus took his shot at the coaching, quarterback play and especially the offensive line.

According to Gregg Rosenthal’s PFT report today, Rosenhaus on Joe Rose’s WQAM radio report this morning. He criticized the Bills’ coaching and shoddy quarterback play, but saved his biggest gripe for the offensive line.

Faceoffs Coincide With Sabres Strong Start

  • Posted on November 6, 2009 at 1:14 pm

connolly faceffThe first six weeks of the season have been good to the Buffalo Sabres. After a 5-0 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday, the club redeemed itself with a shutout of its own back at home. Now 9-2-1 on the season, the Sabres are leading the Northeast and have at least a game in hand over every other team in that division.

While they had a strong start last year as well before falling off, at this point in the season they had already started coming back to earth. As of November 5th, 2008, the Buffalo Sabres were down to 8-3-1 after a 6-0-1 start, and had already had a three-game losing streak in those first 12 games. If the Sabres can make it to the end of the month still leading the division, their fans might just start believing that they’re real, and not just another early season apparition.

Fantasy Friday: The All-”No Way” Teams

  • Posted on November 6, 2009 at 12:16 pm

Do you all know how difficult it is to write a Bills-oriented fantasy column?

With the possible exception of IDP sensation Jairus Byrd, there is not one Buffalo Bill who can be considered a safe fantasy starter.

So maybe it’s actually an easy task. Just don’t start your Bills. Start players against the Bills. That’s all you need to know for the rest of the season. Vacation time!

The Real Biggest Reason The Bills Don’t Win

  • Posted on November 6, 2009 at 1:22 am

Before I launch this long-winded mess; a disclaimer.  Reading this in its entirety for any Bills’ enthusiast may cause stomach pain, nausea, migraines, sleepless nights and/or increased depression.  It may even lead to losing bodily functions.

There’s a laundry list of explanations why the Buffalo Bills have been so futile this decade.  At the top of the hamper lies Dick Jauron.  He’s failed to produce a winning season in three tries and is well on his way to his fourth. His coaching style could best be deemed as unappealing, and his encounters with the media hardly make for good theater. Billboards have been erected via fan donations calling for his firing.

But he’s not the biggest reason the Bills are concluding their decade-long demise.
