With the dramatically sudden firing of Dick Jauron yesterday and Derek Fine going to the I.R. this morning dominating the headlines, a very under the radar move was also made, a manuever that could be very telling about Demetrius Bell.
Bell injured his knee Sunday at Tennessee and the extent of the injury hasn’t been revealed (expect an update this afternoon). Jauron did say Monday in what turned out to be his final presser that he “wasn’t optimistic” about Bell’s injury.
This morning the Bills signed interior linemen Christian Gaddis to the practice squad (his third stint there) and released C.J. Hawthorne.
The quiet move could be a prelude to a significant shift that sees Andy Levitre move to left tackle for the remainder of the season, Seth McKinney to Levitre’s left guard spot and Gaddis being promoted as a backup, possibly by moving Bell to injured reserve.
At this point of the season there is very little value at offensive tackle in the free agent market. Levitre played left tackle in the second half after Bell went down Sunday and perhaps the team plans on keeping them there.
Jamon Meredith is still nursing a bad knee, and Jonathan Scott missed the last game for personal reasons. It’s not likely the team will move either to left tackle anyway. The only other tackle on the roster is Kirk Chambers, who the team isn’t overly confident in.
Regardless, the addition of Gaddis to the practice squad could end up meaning the prognosis on Bell is bad. Of course, until official word comes out this is nothing more than speculation, but that’s the way things could be headed.
Stay tuned for more later following an injury update by Perry Fewell this afternoon.
**UPDATE** Paul Hamilton from WGR is now reporting that Levitre is indeed playing LT at practice today.

Interesting. Not sure I would’ve thought of that.
