The Buffalo Bills have packed their bags and have flown to Kansas City to play the Chiefs today in what will be a meaningless game – as far as playoff hopes go – for either team. In the popular old tune “Kansas City”, the last lyrics in the song are “Gotta find a friendly city, and that’s the reason why, I’m going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come.”
The Bills players aren’t going to find too many friendly faces when they visit Arrowhead Stadium today, but on the other hand they’re not going to find many fans in Buffalo that can honestly wear the moniker “City of Good Neighbors” when it comes to endorsing the Bills organization. Brotherly love is not what most fans are feeling when the topic of Trent Edwards or Terrell Owens, or other assorted Bills players names are brought up in conversation at the office water cooler.

Behind a solid team defensive effort, St. Bona venture held its third opponent of the season to under 50 points en route to an easy 79-47 win over visiting Savannah State on Saturday afternoon at the Reilly Center.
For the first time since 1981-82, the Bonnies have now held three opponents to under 50 points in a season. St. Bonaventure improves to 6-3 with the win and extends its home winning streak at the RC to eight games.
The Bonnies limited Savannah State (4-6) to a 35 percent clip (17-49) from the field and held them without a point over a six-minute stretch in the first half and the opening 7:29 off the second half. For the second straight game, St. Bonaventure capitalized off turnovers, scoring 34 points off of 24 Savannah State miscues.

Sean Smiley was a late addition to the starting lineup after an injury sidelined Rodney Pierce. The senior guard made the most of his first start of the season by scoring 23 points in a 93-65 win over Buffalo State at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. Smiley was one of four UB players to score in double-figures.
Buffalo jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back. The Bulls led by as many of 32 points on the afternoon.

When he promised this at his first press conference as a UB head coach nobody could have imagined just how on the ball his statement was. Turner Gill is the first UB coach since the mid 60’s to achieve success at the highest levels of college football. In every possible measure UB football is better off now than it was after the 2005 season.
- His 20 wins (over four years) is only eclipsed if you go back ten seasons before his arrival (back to the days when UB was a Division IA School).
- Assuming Starks And Roosevelt are drafted this season Gill will have put four players in the NFL via the draft, this is nearly 30% of all Buffalo players, ever, drafted.

OK, I admit that last week’s Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup wasn’t exactly “tailgate” cuisine. And you know I’m a Jets fan, so I’m sure some of you are wishing you could burn me with a giant, scalding pot of chicken soup right now. But I at least gave you a (strong) drink recipe at the end of Thursday’s post…that’s got to count for something, right? Drink until you forgive me.
Allow me to make it up to you. This week, as the Bills take on the Chiefs, I’ve got a quick and easy (I’ll refrain from the mom jokes this week) and TAILGATE-worthy recipe for you: Corn Flake Battered Chicken Strips. Really, you don’t need chef skills, time, or money to make this (but it’s sooo good). Before I present you with the recipe, here’s a little background story that you’ll probably skip over.
If any of you have been to Manhattan, you’ll find that nothing in this city comes cheap (except for the free Staten Island ferry, but that leaves you in Staten Island, so I guess that’s the price you have to pay). As a full-time Unemployment Collector, braving the everyday New York prices are quite the struggle. Especially when it comes to grocery shopping. Especially when we are one of the few cities who don’t have Super Walmart (or any Walmart, for that matter).

Thursday, we talked about the ten best draft picks that the Buffalo Bills have made over the past decade. In order to complete our “[descriptive adjective] of the decade” series here, we’ve got to knock off the worst picks, too. This list can also be known as “why the Bills have sucked for a decade,” but we’re also hoping that one last vent session over these missed picks will be therapeutic as the franchise turns a new leaf – and a new decade – next month.
On to the list. Hope you can stomach it.
10. Josh Reed, WR, LSU (2002, Round 2, No. 36 overall)
Tom Donahoe’s first draft as GM of the Bills, in 2001, netted some really good players. Nate Clements, Aaron Schobel and Travis Henry all made our “best of” list yesterday, and the Bills even got quality years and production out of third-round pick Jonas Jennings. 2002, however, was an epic flop, and Reed, the Bills’ second-round pick (fourth overall in that round), was part of the reason why.

Just a week before the start of the 2009 NFL season, Demetrius Bell was handed the starting left tackle job after then-head coach Dick Jauron cut incumbent tackle Langston Walker. The hope was that Bell would mesh in well with a young but heavily invested offensive line that would form cohesiveness and chemistry.
We’ll have to wait until next year to see what Bell has, because he’s just been placed on the season ending injured reserve list with an ailing knee.
Bell, who also missed a large portion of training camp was only able to play in eight games this season. He was charged with allowing five sacks and committed eight accepted penalties.

If there was one game that Sabres fans must of circled when the schedule came out over the Summer, it’s tonight’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks. It’s going to be an electric atmosphere at the Arena for a game that Sabres fans can only see once every three years (Another reason why the NHL higher-ups are idiots).
Of course the big storyline going into the game is the homecoming of Buffalo native, Patrick Kane, and the return of former Sabre, Brian Campbell. Besides the duo returning home, the Blackhawks sport one of the best teams in the West (and even better uniforms)

Led by four players in double figures and another 50 percent night from the field, the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team defeated a feisty Le Moyne club, 76-65, on Thursday night at the Reilly Center.
The win snaps a two-game losing streak and moves the Bonnies’ record to 5-3 on the season. The loss is the second in three days for the Dolphins, a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, and drops their record to 5-4.
“It was a good win for us. It was a good bounce back from the Mississippi State game,” said head coach Mark Schmidt. “It was a tough game for us. We knew Le Moyne was good and the big kid was really good. I think we got off to a good start, especially with Chris’s threes. We made shots when we needed to but give them credit. They are feisty and they are a good team and I can see how they had success against Syracuse.”

The Bisons are now offering a unique opportunity like no other.
You now have the chance to learn from one of the greatest hitters in the 124-year history of the Buffalo Bisons. Buffalo Baseball Hall of Famer Jeff Manto will be hosting a Three-Day Advanced Hitting Academy from Friday, January 22 – Sunday, January 24.
Designed for high school to college level players, Manto will teach kids everything from footwork and stances to reading pitchers, pitch location, spin and tendencies. The 3-day even culminates with a 15-minute individual session with Manto that will be taped on DVD for each student to take home with them.

With the decade mercifully near an end for the Buffalo Bills faithful, it’s time to pick the best of the best, or in this case the least of the worst, and choose our All-Decade Team.
Usually it’s a tall order selecting a team with players that have spanned over ten years. But in this case the task was hardly daunting. I’m sure arguments will ensue about a player that should’ve made the list, though for the most part selections are pretty irrefutable and self explanatory. Plus, when you have a team that’s finished above .500 once this decade, it’s not like the pickings aren’t considerably slimmer than other franchises.
A majority of the players range from brilliant to respectable. Some, in fact most wouldn’t make the all-decade squads of most teams, but they carved out good years and Buffalo and are deserving of recognition.

The New York Mets selected four players Thursday in the Triple-A phase of the annual Rule V draft from the Baseball Winter Meetings in Indianapolis, IN.
Among the three pitchers selected was RHP John Lujan. The former 15th round pick of the Texas Rangers spent last season with the White Sox Double-A affiliate in Birmingham. With the Barons, Lujan, 25, was 3-5 with a 4.45ERA in 37 relief appearances. He struck out 51 and allowed just one home run in 58.2 innings of work.
RHP Rolando Valdez and LHP Orlando Lara were also selected in the draft along with 1B Thomas Hubbard. No player was selected off the Bisons roster in the Major League portion of the draft.

I don’t get into the whole “Hey, a decade’s about to end, let’s make lists!” culture. It’s fun, but it’s repetitive and boring. Still, those types of lists engender some fun discussions, so while I won’t go overboard and do best/worst lists for every possible topic concerning the Buffalo Bills, I figured we’d knock off the most important aspect of the team: drafting.
This past decade has been a brutal one for Bills football. But even in bad times, a few (random and ultimately meaningless to the win column) good decisions are made. What follows is my list of the Bills’ ten best draft selections of the past decade.

Following a season in which the St. Bonaventure men’s soccer program posted its best overall and conference record in 10 years, seniors Sam Maheu and Tyler Bellamy were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) with Mid-Atlantic all-region honors.
“This is a wonderful and most deserving honor for both Tyler and Sam. Both young men were instrumental in our success this year from their respective ends of the field,” said head coach Mel Mahler. “While we had a very solid corps of players that lead us to the A-10 tournament, both Tyler and Sam raised their play to a higher level, something you hope for and expect from seniors that have played as many college games as they have.”

In the midst of its first losing streak of the young season, St. Bonaventure will look to improve on its current six-game home win streak at the friendly confines of the Reilly Center when it takes on Le Moyne Thursday night. The Bonnies are shooting 51 percent and holding opponents to 61 points per game over the home win streak that dates back to last season. The Dolphins made national headlines at the beginning of the season when they defeated Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in an exhibition game. Thursday’s home game is the Brown and White’s first since Nov. 20. A win would give the St. Bonaventure its longest home win streak (7) since the 2001-02 season.
SERIES HISTORY
Tonight’s meeting between the two clubs in the first in 51 years. The Bonnies have won 13 previous meetings, which all took place in the 1950’s. The two teams met twice per season from 1953-1958, with the first nine games in the series being settled by 10 points or less. St. Bonaventure has held Le Moyne to under 52 points in over half (7) of the meetings and is 9-0 as the home team. Playing in his first season of varsity basketball at St. Bonaventure in 1957-58, SBU Hall of Famer SAM STITH had 16 points and 10 rebounds in one of the two wins over Le Moyne that year.

The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team played arguably its best all-around game of the young season to defeat Niagara, 86-80, at the Gallagher Center on Wednesday night. The Bulls shot a season-best 54 percent to hand the Purple Eagles their first home loss of the season.
Rodney Pierce scored a season-high 25 points to lead four UB players in double-figures. The senior guard added a career-high nine rebounds and three assists.
John Boyer added 12 points to go along with five rebounds and six assists.

There’s only one surefire way to win in the NHL, and that’s to not let the opposition get on the scoreboard. After losing two straight games and looking lethargic in doing so, Ryan Miller single handedly made sure the Buffalo Sabres wouldn’t skate off their home ice without two points.
Defensemen Steve Montador and Henrik Tallinder both scored, sandwiched by Nathan Gerbe’s first NHL goal and Miller stopped all 35 Washington Capitals shots as the Sabres earned a 3-0 shutout victory.
Buffalo scored the game’s only three goals and Miller simply did the rest. The NHL’s best goaltender was at his finest again Wednesday, showing off an assortment of highlight reel saves, especially in the third period to stymie the normally offensive robust Capitals.

Senior Dana Mitchell led the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team with 19 points in a Big 4 matchup, defeating Buffalo 78-55 on Wednesday night at the Reilly Center.
St. Bonaventure improves to 9-0 the season, extending its longest winning streak in program history. With the win against Buffalo, the Bonnies swept the Big 4 for the second consecutive year. St. Bonaventure is now the only team in the A-10 without a loss.

If it wasn’t already a foregone conclusion, Trent Edwards’ season and perhaps career as the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback was quietly nailed shut this afternoon. As the Bills returned to practice to prepare for a trip to Kansas City this Sunday, Ryan Fitzpatrick remained as the first string quarterback. As has been the case recently, he took the vast majority of first team reps at practice, a sure fire sign he’ll be under center come Sunday.
It should come as no surprise, though Buffalo Bills head coach Perry Fewell said three weeks ago upon giving the starting job to Fitzpatrick that he gave them the best chance to win that particular game (Jacksonville), and that he would evaluate the starter on a week-to-week basis with the guy he felt was best suited to get the Bills a victory getting the nod.

From the official Indianapolis Colts website.
The Indianapolis Colts have placed sixth-year veteran quarterback Jim Sorgi on Injured Reserve with a shoulder injury and signed fourth-year veteran offensive tackle Michael Toudouze, the club announced Wednesday.
Sorgi, who appeared in one game in 2009, had been inactive/3rd Quarterback since Week 9 vs. New England. In six seasons with the Colts, Sorgi has appeared in 16 games and completed 99 of 156 passes for 929 yards with six touchdowns and one interception for a 89.9 passer rating.
Toudouze originally was a 2006 fifth-round selection out of TCU by the Colts and spent time between the practice squad and active roster during his three years with the club. Toudouze appeared in four games in 2007 and one post-season game in 2008.
The club also made two moves on its practice squad, signing quarterback Drew Willy and waiving quarterback Shane Boyd. Willy, a rookie out of Buffalo, originally signed as a free agent with Baltimore.
When the Buffalo Sabres take the ice tonight at the HSBC arena to play their fourth of five consecutive home games, which team will we be seeing? We will be witnessing the version that peppered opposing goaltenders to the tune of 18 goals over four consecutive victories? Or we will observe a squad that’s mustered exactly one goal in dropping their last two contests?
If the Sabres want any chance of going to bed with two more points in the standings bank, it better be the former. The red-hot Washington Capitals are coming to town on a roll, winning their past six games and sporting a handsome 19-5-6 record on the season, tops in the entire NHL.
Buffalo has been missing oomph in their scoring attack, and lately they’ve been lacking in the toughness department as well. Paul Gaustad has been out with a lower body injury and it got compounded when Mike Grier left the team on Monday to be with his ailing mother. Neither will be in the lineup tonight.
