Source: Rivera to be candidate for Bills coaching job

Posted on January 2, 2010 by Patrick Moran

Rumors on the Bills head coaching search are sure to fly over the next several days if not weeks, and I’ve learned of one coordinator who could be a strong candidate.

Despite hinting strongly during his introductory press conference that he’d likely hire a head coach with previous experience, a source tells me defensive coordinator Ron Rivera will be high on new general manager Buddy Nix’s list of candidates for the Bills head coaching position.

To interview Rivera, Nix would have to get permission from the San Diego Chargers.  He’s been their defensive coordinator since the midpoint of the 2008 season and previously served in the same role with the Chicago Bears from 2004-06.  Chicago went to the Super Bowl in ‘06 with a defense that ranked fifth in the NFL under his leadership.

Rivera went to San Diego to be their linebackers coach but was promoted to defensive coordinator last year after Ted Cottrell was fired halfway through the 2008 season.

Rivera, who was the first Puerto Rican to ever play in the NFL, was a linebacker with Chicago from 1984-92 and has been in coaching since 1997.  He’ll turn 48 on January 7.

Interestingly enough a potential Rivera hire would likely throw the Bills into full blown rebuilding mode, at least defensively. Rivera employs the 3-4 scheme and is a strong proponent of it.

A no nonsense type of guy, Rivera has been tutored by some of the game’s great defensive minds including Buddy Ryan, Jim Johnson and Lovie Smith.

I’m told Nix is a strong admirer of the work Rivera’s done in San Diego and could become a very realistic candidate for the job.

Meanwhile, the reaction to Nix’s hiring continues to be mixed at best.  Pro Football Talk publisher Mike Florio wrote a scathing review of Nix, citing a league source that said “Bills fans can rest assured that, a year from now, two years from now, and three and four years from now, the team will still be in last place in the AFC East. The Jets, Patriots, and Dolphins continue to make moves to get better while the Bills just tread water. There are good people who were very interested in that job, like Dave Gettelman, Scott Studwell and Doug Whaley that never got a chance. All those guys could have helped that team. The best hope for Bills fans is that the owner decides to sell the team and then someone who cares about winning takes over and brings in qualified people.”

**UPDATE** - Paul Hamilton of WGR 550 also has a report where he cites a source that says Nix will look for permission to contact Rivera.
