Defensive Coordinator vacancy reaches another week

Posted on February 1, 2010 by Patrick Moran

Names have floated around as potential defensive coordinator in Buffalo at the same rate as when the team had a head coaching vacancy last month.  One of those names was former Baltimore Ravens linebacker coach Vic Fangio.

You can formally scratch his name off the Bills list.  Fangio signed on over the weekend to become defensive coordinator at Stanford under head coach Jim Harbaugh, who apparently rejected a Buffalo offer to become head coach in mid January.

Fangio was speculated to be a candidate for the Bills defensive coordinator, though it’s not known if the organization actually contacted him.

The Bills remain without a coordinator for the time being, though Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News noted the team could announce one as early as Wednesday.

Bob Sanders, who the Bills retained as defensive line coach remains a candidate for promotion.  Clancy Pendergast was thought to be a candidate; though we learned that as of late last week the Bills have had no contact with him.

There’s a possibility Chan Gailey gives the job to a current college coach, which could explain the delay in announcing one.  National college signing day is Wednesday and if the choice is a college guy an announcement could come soon after.

Gailey has already signed one former college coach from his days at Georgia Tech.  Giff Smith was their defensive line coach and joins Buffalo as a “defensive assistant”, though it’s expected he’ll be coaching the outside linebackers.

We have no information on college candidates so we’re not going to speculate, though I’ve been told the team will be switching to a 3-4 defense.

  1. Matt

Most of the coaches Gailey has signed were former college coaches from Georgia Tech, not just 1………Many of them got a 1 year stint with the “prolific” 2008 Chiefs offense! However, these guys sure do work cheap and old Ralphy loves that!
