Free Agent Files: Tony Pashos

Posted on February 24, 2010 by Patrick Moran

(We’re running a series profiling players that could fit into the Buffalo Bills’ plans leading up to the start of free agency on March 5.  Today we look at San Francisco right tackle Tony Pashos)

Brad Butler caught the Buffalo Bills organization off guard with the sudden announcement of his retirement last week. While the 26-year old would’ve been coming off a major knee injury and was by no means a Pro Bowl prospect at right tackle, his departure at the very least created yet another hole the already rebuilding Bills need to fill.

Buddy Nix has stated several times he plans to do the majority of his building through the draft, but even the man who professed he’ll never be the smartest man in the room knows there’s only so many picks who can be expected to start early on.

Buffalo is almost certain to find their next left tackle via the draft and it’s not likely they’ll start a rookie on one side and a youngster like Jamon Meredith or Demetrius Bell, such unproven commodities on the other .  A rookie and near-rook is the perfect recipe to get your quarterback killed and Nix knows that.  Therefore there’s a good chance the Bills will fill the right tackle void with an experienced candidate.

One of those could be San Francisco right tackle Tony Pashos.  He’s no blue-chipper at 30 years old but is a viable starting option.  At six-foot-six and 325 pounds he’s similar to Butler in size and his strength is in run blocking.  He’s one of those prototypical run maulers who are better at the point of attack than in open space.

Pretty much any free agent the Bills sign will come with at least a red flag or two and Pashos is no exception. He finished last season on injured reserve with a broken left shoulder blade.

He previously struggled when he was with Jacksonville, so bad in fact the team selected a pair of offensive tackles (Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton) with their first two picks in the 2008 draft.  Pashos was cut soon after and signed with San Francisco.

But for a modest price the risk would be worth the reward.  Pashos is better than Meredith and Bell at this stage and with the growing list of other needs it’s doubtful the Bills will pick more than one tackle in the draft. He can step in and become a serviceable starter while the club finds out what they have with their young tackles over the long haul.

He’ll never wow you with open field pancake blocks and won’t be mistaken for an athletic lineman, but Pashos has a nasty streak and is good enough in the trenches that he’d be worth taking a flyer on.
