When you’re facing a team clearly inferior on paper, there’s always the threat of getting caught looking ahead. The Buffalo Sabres are in the playoffs and the Florida Panthers are not. When Florida got on the board just 1:51 into the game, it looked like the Sabres may get lulled into a poor performance.
Turns out they were merely playing possum.
Buffalo dominated over most of the next 58 minutes in taking another step towards securing a high seed in the playoffs. The 6-2 victory in front of an ecstatic HSBC Arena crowd gave them their seventh victory in their last eight games.

It’s that time of the year and the ballots have been collected and tallied, and it’s time to start announcing the winners for the annual awards in the AHL.
It’s starting off strong for the Portland Pirates as forward Tyler Ennis has been named to the AHL All-Rookie Team for 2009-’10.
Ennis, 21, is currently with the Buffalo Sabres where he’s scored one goal, two assists in three games. He’s been one of the top forwards with Portland all season long where he’s scored 23 goals, 42 assists for 65 points in 69 games.
Ennis was named to the AHL All-Star Classic held in Portland where he won the All-Star MVP award, scoring a goal and two assists.

The Buffalo Bills have brought in a veteran wide receiver to the mix, adding free agent wide receiver Chad Jackson, the team announced.
Jackson was highly touted as a second round draft pick of New England in 2006. In fact the Patriots moved up 16 spots in the second round with Green Bay to acquire him.
But since then he’s done next-to-nothing during his career. His two seasons with the Patriots were marred by injuries as he caught just 13 passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns.
After being cut by New England in 2008 he was picked up by the Denver Broncos. He played in four games for them, catching one pass for 19 yards.
He was out of the league in 2009.

The Buffalo Bills found out this afternoon who their preseason opponents will be. Buffalo will open the preseason at Washington. The next week they’ll host the Indianapolis Colts in Toronto.
The Bills will play their only game at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
As it seems every year, they close out the preseason with a tilt against the Lions in Detroit.
None of the games will be shown nationally.
Also, the team announced that they’re resigned restricted free agent cornerback Ashton Youboty.

The Buffalo Bisons announced they are holding auditions for aspiring performers who would like to sing the national anthem at a Bisons home game.
Auditions will be held for contestants this coming Friday and Saturday. Friday times are scheduled from noon to 3pm while Saturday times are 10am-1pm.
According to the club you don’t need an appointment to participate.
Just don’t be pitchy!
After missing six consecutive games with a wrist injury, Sabres forward Raffi Torres will be in the lineup tonight when the club faces off against the Florida Panthers at the HSBC Arena.
To make room the team has sent forward Mark Mancari back to their AHL affiliate Portland Pirates. Mancari played Monday in the 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins.
Torres has two assists in seven games for Buffalo since being acquired on March 3.
Head coach Lindy Ruff still hasn’t announced his goaltender for the game. With a road game in Toronto tomorrow night, Patrick Lalime is likely to get a start in one of the two games.
Senior defender Dave Cianfrini and senior forward Jason Weeks of the Canisius College hockey team will each continue their hockey careers in the ECHL. Cianfrini signed with the Victoria Salmon Kings, while Weeks was added to the Bakersfield Condors’ roster.
An assistant captain with the Griffs this season, Cianfrini played in all 37 games, setting a career high with 15 points and seven goals to go along with eight assists. The Salmon Kings are affiliated with NHL’s Vancouver Canucks and AHL’s Manitoba Moose.

There’s one sure fire way for the Buffalo Sabres to ensure the once again red-hot Ottawa Senators can’t catch them for the Northeast Division; maintain a multiple game lead. With the Sabres idle on Tuesday night, Ottawa won their fifth straight against Washington to pull within five points of Buffalo’s lead.
The Sabres can stretch that lead back to a more comfy seven if they can handle the struggling Florida Panthers tonight at the HSBC Arena.
Including tonight Buffalo has two games in hand over their rivals. A combination of six more points gained by Buffalo or lost by Ottawa will clinch the division.

Buffalo Bills safety George Wilson has had quite the past 12 months. A year ago he was little more than a special teams player trying to carve his way into a prolonged NFL career. The converted wide receiver went from practice squad member to valuable depth in three seasons with the team, but only amassed career totals of 64 tackles and two interceptions.
Wilson’s stock soared last season when he took advantage of injuries in the secondary to become a starter. He finished 2009 with career-highs of 103 tackles, four interceptions and two sacks.
A restricted free agent, the Bills thought enough of him to tender him at the second-round level, which Wilson signed this week worth $1.759 million.

Though the 2010 NFL season is still miles away from commencing, the Buffalo Bills players are (mostly) in town this week for voluntary workouts. For a lot of the players it’s their first opportunity to meet with new head coach Chan Gailey.
That includes Trent Edwards, who started last year at quarterback but ended in a state of flux. Edwards began the season decently but started unraveling by the third week. He would miss two games with injury only to come back against Tennessee and play so poorly it would lead to his benching. He made a cameo appearance against New England in week 15 and reinjured exactly two plays later. It finished off his dismal campaign.

Fans of professional wrestling, especially those who remember the 1980’s era will surely recall Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake.
Beefcake will headline a professional wrestling card along with a host of Empire State Wrestling (ESW) stars on May 8 at the Lockport Kenan Center.
The show is designed raise money for the Kenan Center Arena Project 2010.
Beefcake (who’s real name is Ed Leslie) broke into what was then known as the WWF in 1984. Under the guidance of manager “Luscious” Johnny Valiant, Beefcake teamed with Greg “the Hammer” Valentine to win the WWF Tag Team championship in 1985. They held the titles until losing to the British Bulldogs at Wrestlemania II in 1986.

The Sabres entered the ten game evaluation period on a two game winning streak after one of the worst stretches of team play this season and that small upswing carried over in a five to three win over the Dallas Stars at the HSBC arena. The moxie apparently never got to Patrick Lalime, as a shaky performance in a three to two loss to the wild had the veteran backup feeling the wrath of a hostile home crowd. The Sabres then headed out on the road to face the defending Western Conference Champion Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. After falling into a quick two goal hole, Buffalo rallied to tie the game on two goals by Jochen Hecht. Ryan Miller was huge in his homecoming, stopping thirty four of thirty seven shots en route to being named first star of the game.

Everyone would’ve excused the Buffalo Sabres Monday night had they took one on the chin against the Boston Bruins. They were facing a team playing in front of a charged home crowd who’s on the fringe of an intense playoff race.
To make matters worse Buffalo was facing a team they only beat once in four previous tries this season without four regular forwards. Raffi Torres, Patrick Kaleta, Thomas Vanek and Tim Connolly were all out of action.
So when David Krejci opened the scoring just under eight minutes into the game against a seemingly outmanned squad, it was assumed the rout would be on.
You know what they say about people that assume…

Fans of Frank Turner were disappointed to not see him on the floor Friday night when the Buffalo Stampede played Quebec at the Koessler Athletic Center, the site of many great games by Turner as the point guard at Canisius College.
I spoke with Stampede representative Richard Anselmo. He told me that Turner missed the game because he had his Canisius senior banquet.
Turner has played in three games with the Stampede since joining the team on March 12. He’s averaged 19 points and seven assists in those games, all Buffalo losses.

Buffalo State’s Jenna Frieling and Kyrstin Lekki swept the weekly State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) awards, earning Pitcher and Player of the Week recognition respectively after helping the Bengals to a 6-4 start to the season.
Frieling, a senior exceptional and elementary education major, went 2-2 with a save in a week where she threw 25 2/3 innings with a 1.36 ERA and limited opponents to a miniscule .149 batting average. She also had 22 strikeouts and just six walks. Frieling capped the week with a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 6-0 win over Loras (IA).

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter is reporting late this afternoon that the Oakland Raiders have emerged as the front runner to land Donovan McNabb in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Oakland has emerged as leader in Donovan McNabb sweepstakes,” Schefter said via his twitter. “Doesn’t mean another team couldn’t get deal done, but Raiders are team to beat.”
While the Buffalo Bills have been reported to be among the teams interested in trading for the 33-year old, the odds of getting a deal done have never been high.

The playoffs are fast approaching, and Sabres Nation is frustrated because their team has lost every single game to its hated rival all season.
The thought of facing them in the postseason evokes the same feelings as when trying to walk past the school bully without giving up their lunch money. Bad memories still linger of the most recent playoff matchup that saw the Sabres on the short end of a five game series.
Get the picture, Buffalo? As I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, I’m referring to the 2000-01 Sabres and their struggles against the Philadelphia Flyers.

University at Buffalo senior Chaz Mye earned Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced on Monday. This past Saturday, Mye led the Bulls to their first conference home opening victory since the 2002 season.
In game one of Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader, Mye (3-2) led the Bulls to a 5-2 victory in their conference home opener. Mye recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts, striking out the first four batters he faced. Allowing only five hits in 8.1 innings of work, Mye’s performance solidified the Bulls’ victory.
The Bulls (10-10, 1-2 MAC) will travel to Olean, NY on Tuesday to face St. Bonaventure in a mid-week matchup with the first pitch set for 2:00 pm.
The Tim Tebow to Buffalo possibility has grown to the next level.
The former Heisman Trophy winner was in Buffalo Sunday for a visit, one which continues into today. Although Tebow is just one of several quarterback prospects the Bills have either visited with, talked to or saw work out, Tebow comes with the endorsement of the greatest quarterback the franchise has ever known.
Jim Kelly has made his desire for the Bills to draft Tebow no secret. He’s said repeatedly he thinks Tebow can be the leader to turn around an ailing franchise that’s went a decade without a playoff game, with the position he vacated being the primary reason.
He showed his fondness for Tebow Sunday evening as the Hall of Famer and future NFL quarterback were spotted together by several fans at the Buffalo Chop House restaurant in downtown Buffalo.
We’re assuming Jimbo picked up the tab.

Whether they admit it or not, the Buffalo Sabres are hoping for at least two things to happen over the last few weeks of the regular season. One is obvious—winning the Northeast Division.
They are well on their way. With a five point lead and two games in hand over Ottawa, a .500 record over their last eight games should get it done.
The other thing they clearly don’t want to see is Ottawa finish sixth in the Eastern Conference. It’s not exactly a secret around the league that the Senators own the Sabres. The good news is if Buffalo holds onto the division and locks up a third seed they’ll probably avoid Ottawa in the first round. The Sens are currently in fifth place in the conference by five points over Montreal, with each team having just six games left. If the Sabres win the Northeast then Ottawa would have to finish sixth to make a first round matchup happen.

Since the start of Buffalo Sports Daily last September, one of the things I’ve enjoyed the most over the first six months is covering high school basketball and Nichols in particular. As a diehard hoops fan residing in a city without a professional franchise and only borderline mid-major colleges, the high school scene gives me the hoops fix I often crave.
I got the chance to cover a lot of Nichols games this year and they’ve been a team that’s fascinated me. I’ve seen a lot of good teams over the years but there was something about this Vikings team that stood out. They seemed to be a complete team; strong play up front (Will Regan, Connor Vandegriff), good perimeter shooting (Stan Wier, Andrew MacKinnon), a true floor general running the point (Ron Canestro) and a coach (Greg Plumb) who’s basketball intelligence trickled down to his talented players. It had me wondering if the team I was impressed with all season could compete with and beat the very best in the entire state.

According to a report by Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, the Buffalo Bills have worked out free agent inside linebacker Zeke Moreno.
Moreno, 31, is a former fifth round pick of the San Diego Chargers in 2001 out of USC.
Current Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix was in his second year on the Chargers staff as the Director of Player Personnel when Moreno was drafted.
Moreno spent four years with the Chargers and part of a fifth with the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans in 2005. His best season came in 2003 when he had 95 tackles and a pair of sacks with the Chargers as a 15-game starter.
Moreno has spent the past three years in the Canadian Football League with Hamilton, Winnipeg and Toronto.
He was recently released from Toronto.
The Buffalo Bisons improved to 6-0 this spring with a 7-2 victory over the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis) on Sunday afternoon from Port St. Lucie, FL.
The Bisons hitters remained red hot this spring. C Josh Thole went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored while INF Luis Hernandez was 2-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
OF Jason Pridie had an RBI-triple to go along with a stolen base and two runs scored. Buffalo’s 2009 team MVP, OF Jesus Feleciano had a pair of RBI and a stolen base.
