Trent Edwards defends his confidence

  • Posted on March 30, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Trent EdwardsThough the 2010 NFL season is still miles away from commencing, the Buffalo Bills players are (mostly) in town this week for voluntary workouts.  For a lot of the players it’s their first opportunity to meet with new head coach Chan Gailey.

That includes Trent Edwards, who started last year at quarterback but ended in a state of flux.  Edwards began the season decently but started unraveling by the third week. He would miss two games with injury only to come back against Tennessee and play so poorly it would lead to his benching.  He made a cameo appearance against New England in week 15 and reinjured exactly two plays later. It finished off his dismal campaign.

Brutus Beefcake to headline Lockport show May 8

  • Posted on March 30, 2010 at 9:45 am

Brutus BeefcakeFans of professional wrestling, especially those who remember the 1980’s era will surely recall Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake.

Beefcake will headline a professional wrestling card along with a host of Empire State Wrestling (ESW) stars on May 8 at the Lockport Kenan Center.

The show is designed raise money for the Kenan Center Arena Project 2010.

Beefcake (who’s real name is Ed Leslie) broke into what was then known as the WWF in 1984.  Under the guidance of manager “Luscious” Johnny Valiant, Beefcake teamed with Greg “the Hammer” Valentine to win the WWF Tag Team championship in 1985.  They held the titles until losing to the British Bulldogs at Wrestlemania II in 1986.

Sabres 10 Game Review: PLAYOFFS!

  • Posted on March 30, 2010 at 8:20 am

Dates: March 10th to March 27th

Record: 6-3-1

The Sabres entered the ten game evaluation period on a two game winning streak after one of the worst stretches of team play this season and that small upswing carried over in a five to three win over the Dallas Stars at the HSBC arena.  The moxie apparently never got to Patrick Lalime, as a shaky performance in a three to two loss to the wild had the veteran backup feeling the wrath of a hostile home crowd.  The Sabres then headed out on the road to face the defending Western Conference Champion Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.  After falling into a quick two goal hole, Buffalo rallied to tie the game on two goals by Jochen Hecht.  Ryan Miller was huge in his homecoming, stopping thirty four of thirty seven shots en route to being named first star of the game.

Miller helps Sabres steal two points in Boston

  • Posted on March 30, 2010 at 7:31 am

Ryan Miller saveEveryone would’ve excused the Buffalo Sabres Monday night had they took one on the chin against the Boston Bruins.  They were facing a team playing in front of a charged home crowd who’s on the fringe of an intense playoff race.

To make matters worse Buffalo was facing a team they only beat once in four previous tries this season without four regular forwards. Raffi Torres, Patrick Kaleta, Thomas Vanek and Tim Connolly were all out of action.

So when David Krejci opened the scoring just under eight minutes into the game against a seemingly outmanned squad, it was assumed the rout would be on.

You know what they say about people that assume…

Frank Turner expected back for Stampede this week

  • Posted on March 30, 2010 at 7:15 am

Fans of Frank Turner were disappointed to not see him on the floor Friday night when the Buffalo Stampede played Quebec at the Koessler Athletic Center, the site of many great games by Turner as the point guard at Canisius College.

I spoke with Stampede representative Richard Anselmo.  He told me that Turner missed the game because he had his Canisius senior banquet.

Turner has played in three games with the Stampede since joining the team on March 12.  He’s averaged 19 points and seven assists in those games, all Buffalo losses.

Frieling, Lekki Sweep SUNYAC Weekly Softball Honors

  • Posted on March 30, 2010 at 6:00 am

Buffalo State CollegeBuffalo State’s Jenna Frieling and Kyrstin Lekki swept the weekly State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) awards, earning Pitcher and Player of the Week recognition respectively after helping the Bengals to a 6-4 start to the season.

Frieling, a senior exceptional and elementary education major, went 2-2 with a save in a week where she threw 25 2/3 innings with a 1.36 ERA and limited opponents to a miniscule .149 batting average. She also had 22 strikeouts and just six walks. Frieling capped the week with a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 6-0 win over Loras (IA).
