Bills contact Porter but face uphill battle landing him

Posted on March 8, 2010 by Patrick Moran

Joey PorterAccording to ESPN’s Adam Schefter the Buffalo Bills have contacted free agent linebacker Joey Porter.  But in the same report he implies if the Bills want to pursue him it they’ll have competition from at least one team.

The Arizona Cardinals are interested in him as well and according to Schefter, Porter is scheduled to visit with the team on Thursday.

No visit for Porter has been scheduled for Buffalo as of late Sunday night.

Porter was released by Miami last week, in part because of issues on the field and with head coach Tony Sparano.

Money was also a factor.

He had two years left on a five-year, $32 million deal he signed in March 2007. The Dolphins have already spent big bucks on Karlos Dansby and are targeting safety Ryan Clark among other free agents.

In spite of an overall consensus that he’s hit a wall after 13 years in the league, Porter still had nine sacks in 14 games with Miami last year. The year before he led the AFC with 17.5 sacks and has not had less than five in a season since his rookie year in 1999.

The Bills desperately need players who can get after the quarterback in their new 3-4 defense and coordinator George Edwards coached Porter in Miami.

Three other players projected to start at linebacker next year, Paul Posluszny, Kawika Mitchell and Aaron Maybin combined for exactly one (Posluszny) sack in 33 combined games in 2009.

Head coach Chan Gailey has stated Chris Kelsay and Aaron Schobel (if he doesn’t retire) could be 3-4 linebackers, though neither seems like a good fit.

So while the Bills interest in Porter appears to be legitimate, the odds of landing him aren’t in their favor.  Porter has said he prefers to play on the west coast to be closer to his home in California.

Presumably Buffalo would have to blow him away with a big offer to have him roaming the field in Orchard Park in 2010.

Is he worth it?
