Bills finally start making roster moves

Posted on March 4, 2010 by Brian Galliford

ESPN’s John Clayton is reporting that the Buffalo Bills have re-signed unrestricted free agent Bryan Scott to a two-year, $3-plus million contract.

The six-year veteran logged starts at both safety and linebacker in 2009, ending the season with 81 tackles, two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble. He did miss several weeks with an ankle injury before making the switch to linebacker, and also sat out the final two weeks of the season with a concussion.

Scott, 29, is likely to move back to strong safety as the team transitions to the 3-4 defense under new defensive coordinator George Edwards. The decision to bring back Scott preserves the Bills’ depth at the position, as Scott’s physical style of play complements the skill sets of fellow safeties Jairus Byrd, Donte Whitner and George Wilson rather well.

Regarding Restricted Free Agents

Mark Gaughan at The Buffalo News is reporting that the Buffalo Bills have offered a restricted free agent contract to safety George Wilson at the second-round level. Should Wilson sign a deal with another team and be allowed to leave, the Bills would receive a second-round pick as compensation for the 29-year-old safety’s departure. If Wilson signs his tender, he’ll be paid $1.7 million in 2010. There have been reports that the team is talking about extending Wilson beyond one year.

Earlier today, WGR 550 reported that the team had extended a tender offer to linebacker Keith Ellison, as well. It’s not yet known what level of tender offer Ellison received.

The team has now confirmed that Ashton Youboty and Derek Schouman received tender offers as well. The club does not disclose tender levels, so Wilson’s second-round tender is the only one we know for sure at this moment.

The decision to extend tenders to just four players leaves Gibran Hamdan, Joe Klopfenstein, Jonathan Scott, and Richie Incognito out of the loop. They immediately become unrestricted free agents.

Not sure why they didn’t just cut Ellison……..he is a nice guy, but too small to play LB in the NFL no matter what the defensive scheme…….
