Buffalo Bills News & Notes

Aaron MaybinNot much going on at all this weekend with regard to the Buffalo Bills, but I do have a few small tidbits with things I’ve been hearing I thought were worth sharing with you.

♦♦ I’ve heard that Aaron Maybin is in ridiculously good shape right now, the best of his life and is completely embracing the opportunity to perform in the 3-4 defense.  I’m told he’s stepped up his workout regime tremendously and is adding more muscle to his frame.

People that want to write off Maybin after an uneventful rookie season blow my mind.  He was drafted 11th overall because he has the ability to get after the quarterback, and he should be graded on a curve, especially after playing in a defense not suited for him last year.

While many criticized the drafting of Maybin from the day he was selected, I liked the move.  However, I liked the selection on the basis of him being a Terrell Suggs type of player and with the new defense he’ll get that chance.

For his part, I’m told he’s taking his conditioning and focus very serious.  He could have a breakout season in his sophomore campaign.

♦♦ I spoke to a former NFL scout still connected around the league, and he told me that Bryan Bulaga is not a lock to be the second or even third offensive tackle in the draft.  He said that Bulaga to him projects as a nice and safe, but not elite tackle in the NFL and wouldn’t be surprised if he eventually ended up playing on some team’s right side.  If that’s the case, then he shouldn’t be taken as high as the top nine in the draft.  I asked the former scout who he thought would be a good tackle for the Bills and he told despite his recent workout disasters, Anthony Davis could be an elite left tackle.

♦♦ As reported by PFT, the Bills are going to meet with running back C.J. Spiller.  Although the tremendous Clemson star reminds many of Chris Johnson, I don’t see the Bills taking him.  Buffalo could easily be showing extended interest in Spiller to entice a team drafting behind him, such as San Francisco, Denver or Seattle to move into the Bills spot.

The Bills could use as many picks in the first three rounds as they can get their hands on.  If they could find a way to move down from the ninth spot it’d be a very wise move.

♦♦ No news to report on the free agent wide receiver front. I’m still under the assumption the team is looking at veteran possibilities.  Kelley Washington, who the Bills reportedly had interest in early in the process could be the leading candidate.  Don’t count out Bobby Wade or even Javon Walker if the price is right.

♦♦ I’m told that while the Bills discussed Joey Porter, they never attempted to bring him in for a visit.  I don’t know if Porter told him he had no interest, but Buddy Nix definitely didn’t feel having Porter here was worth the time.  As he desired, Porter got his west coast wish when he signed with the Arizona Cardinals on Friday.

Maybin will be a bust! He wasn’t even a starter going into his senior year at Penn St until the guy ahead of him got hurt!

Plus he is too small. Where are those 15-20 pounds he gained between the combine and his campus workout? He was tested at the combine, but there is no testing at the campus workouts. In fact he would not be test again until he signed which was mid August…….gotta wonder what happened to those pounds????

Matt please at least get your facts straight if you’re gonna criticize. Though the jury is still out on Maybin one thing is for sure…..Maybin never had a senior year like you said. Nor did he have a junior season. He wasn’t a starter going into his final season because he was a redshirt sophomore and when he was given the opportunity to start (albeit via injury) he shined. I’m not saying whether he’ll be good or not (I personally think he’ll drastically improve this year) but I will quote Mike Gundy by saying “get your facts straight”

FIRST… Maybin came out after his SOPHOMORE YEAR!

SECOND… He would have definitely gone top 15 if we didn’t take him. He was a decent pick and now that we are switching to the 3-4 he will be a great pick… guaranteed!

Honestly dude(MATT), I dont think its Maybin you need to worry about because the defense gets their work done and I believe that going to a 3-4 defense the opposing teams better watch out, I believe that with him training and doing what he has to do he WILL be successful, and btw Id worry abouyt the offense not the DEFENSE cause they gets it don son so shut the heck up thanx!
