Tebow in Buffalo as Kelly continues to show support

Posted on March 29, 2010 by Patrick Moran

Tim TebowThe Tim Tebow to Buffalo possibility has grown to the next level.

The former Heisman Trophy winner was in Buffalo Sunday for a visit, one which continues into today.  Although Tebow is just one of several quarterback prospects the Bills have either visited with, talked to or saw work out, Tebow comes with the endorsement of the greatest quarterback the franchise has ever known.

Jim Kelly has made his desire for the Bills to draft Tebow no secret. He’s said repeatedly he thinks Tebow can be the leader to turn around an ailing franchise that’s went a decade without a playoff game, with the position he vacated being the primary reason.

He showed his fondness for Tebow Sunday evening as the Hall of Famer and future NFL quarterback were spotted together by several fans at the Buffalo Chop House restaurant in downtown Buffalo.

We’re assuming Jimbo picked up the tab.

While it’s clear Kelly’s support for Tebow will hold some water with the organization, how much is unclear.  Kelly was outspoken about his preference for Bill Cowher a couple of months ago, but Buddy Nix ultimately hired Chan Gailey, in part because Cowher didn’t want to end his retirement to return to coaching in Buffalo.

The Bills own the ninth pick of the second round but may need to make a move up the board to land Tebow.  While the overall consensus seems to be he’ll last until the late second or even third round, people I’ve spoken with think he could easily be gone before the 41st pick.

Buffalo is not the only team in the market for a quarterback early in the draft. Cleveland, Oakland and possibly Washington could take one in the second round and all select ahead of the Bills.

Former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah told me that a team or two not many would think of being in the mix for Tebow could emerge on draft day.

No matter where he ends up going in the draft Tebow is going to need time, probably at least a full year to adjust being the NFL. He’s been working over the past seven weeks at refining throwing mechanics that have been criticized by several scouts.

The Bills have started nine different quarterbacks since Kelly retired. The organization seems serious about the possibility of drafting Tebow and if Kelly has his way it could happen.

Buffalo has made a habit in recent years of moving up the draft board to make an extra early round  selection.  Three times over the past four years they’ve moved up, including 2006 with John McCargo, 2007 with Paul Posluszny and last year with Andy Levitre.

If they want Tebow, they may have to make it four out of five.

Check back today for any Tebow news to come out of One Bills Drive.  We’re trying to find out if he plans on speaking to the media.  Typically prospect visitors don’t, but this isn’t exactly an under-the-radar stopover.

The only thing that bothers me about Tebow is that he hasn’t played in cold weather consistently. Kelly, even though he went to Miami, was born and raised in PA so he was used to it. Tebow was born in Florida and played for the Univ of Florida. We need a cold weather QB!
