Bills Should Say No To “Flo”

Posted on April 2, 2010 by Patrick Moran

In a town as rabid about their football team as the Buffalo Bills, there is bound to be debate amongst fans when any notable football player hits the open market.  That will likely be the case in the coming days after the Dallas Cowboys released former Pro Bowl offensive tackle Flozell Adams on Friday.

The fit only seems natural.  Adams is a five-time Pro Bowler and a household name league-wide, and it doesn’t take an expert to realize Buffalo is in dire need of talent at left tackle.

Having said that, there’s no way the Bills should pursue him.

For starters, he’ll be 35 years old when next season starts.  According to Stats, Inc Adams gave up a career-high eight sacks last year and was penalized nine times.  He was also fined $50 grand for shoving New York Giants defender Justin Tuck from behind after a play had been blown dead.

The Bills already signed an offensive tackle long in the tooth in 11-year veteran Cornell Green last month, not to mention Adams won’t come to Buffalo on the cheap.

If the organization is smart it’ll stick to their plan of finding a left tackle early in the draft.  When it comes to the offensive line the team needs a long-term solution, not another stop gap like Green.  Plus, you can never predict how they’ll finish this season or if they’ll get a chance to draft a top three tackle in 2011.

If Trent Williams or Bryan Bulaga is on the board it should take Buddy Nix about four seconds to submit one of their names.  Of course, Jimmy Clausen could have something to say about that if he’s there too.

But even if they are unable to resist Clausen, Buffalo should target a young tackle soon after.

The Bills are probably not contenders for 2010 and employing a pair of short term tackles makes too little sense for a guy like Nix.

How on earth can you say that a certain strategy does or does not make sense of a guy like Nix? He has never been a GM in his life, so you can’t base it on his track record of building franchises as he has none. Nix is nothing more than an old scout who won the lottery and got a shot at playing fantasy GM at 70! He admitted a few months ago that he didn’t know much about the salary cap and contract negotiations (further shooting down the realy responsibility he had with that asst. GM title in SD).

    Hey Matt,

Nix doesn’t need to know about salary negotiations since they have a guy on staff that does that. They also don’t need to worry about the salary cap right now. Nix is a talent evaluator. That’s always been his role - in Buffalo, San Diego, and now back in Buffalo.

The GM needs to understand all parts of the business not just scout college talent. Nix is nothing more than a glorified scout, but certainly not a GM!
