Chan Gailey was on the “The Big Early” radio show this morning on The Fan 590 in Toronto. While speaking with Don Landry & Gord Stellick, the subject of quarterback Jeff Garcia came up.
While Gailey remained non-committal in adding Garcia to the roster, he hinted strongly that it could be coming.
“You’re always interested in quality and certainly Jeff Garcia would be quality,” Gailey said. “To me, to say absolutely no or absolutely yes would be a lie— but to say you’re always interested in adding quality to your football team, you better believe it.”
Garcia has ties with new Bills quarterback coach George Cortez in Calgary of the CFL. Garcia was Calgary’s quarterback when Cortez was the offensive coordinator back in 1998. Garcia was named Grey Cup MVP in ’98 in leading the Stampeders to a CFL championship.
According to Landry, Garcia has said he’d be interested in playing for Buffalo and said so recently in Calgary.
If the Bills were to bring Garcia in, it would clearly be for the short term. At 40 years olds his best days are behind him and he’d likely serve as a mentor to a rookie quarterback or perhaps Brian Brohm. His addition would almost certainly spell the end of Trent Edwards and/or Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Also worth nothing, Gailey hinted yet again the Bills may not make a pick with the ninth selection that everyone is expecting.
“Buddy (Nix) will make the pick,” Gailey said. “He and I work closely together but the guy has been in personnel for a long time and is very successful at it. I’m coaching and he’s kind of doing the personnel part but we work very closely with each other in both areas. He’s going to do what’s best for our football team. It may not be exactly what everyone else thinks we should do but we’re going to what’s best for our football team.”
Garcia would be a nice veteran presence. He has always worked best in a West Coast offense. What type of offense is Gailey planning to install?
