Will Bills be interested in Jason Campbell?

Posted on April 4, 2010 by Patrick Moran

The Philadelphia Eagles have traded Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins for a pair of draft picks, as first reported by Adam Schefter on Sunday evening.

The Eagles will receive a second-round pick (37th overall) in this month’s NFL draft and either a third- or fourth-round pick next year depending on McNabb’s performance.

It’s been reported the Buffalo Bills were interested in McNabb, but it’s not known if the team ever made an official offer.

A representative for McNabb stated that the six-time Pro Bowl quarterback would not be interested in signing an extension if he came to Buffalo or Oakland.

Keep your eyes and ears open in the coming days for possible interest in the suddenly-former Redskins starter Jason Campbell.  The restricted free agent had a first round tender but with McNabb in tow, the Redskins will certainly lower their trade demand price.

The tender would pay Campbell $3.1 million for 2010 and it’s highly doubtful  Washington will pay that much for a backup.  Trading him would also be an opportunity to recoup a draft pick or two from the McNabb trade.

I’d expect Washington’s asking price to drop to a third or fourth rounder for Campbell.

Campbell has mostly gotten a bad rap during his first four years, but if you examine his numbers they’re surprisingly good. He’s completed 61.1% of his passes and tossed 53 touchdowns against 38 interceptions.

His biggest problem is with fumbles; he’s put the ball on the ground 30 times and lost 12 of them. He’s also been sacked 79 times over the past two seasons, something Bills quarterbacks are exceptionally familiar with.

In some regards he has the potential to be a poor man’s Drew Brees; a guy who didn’t cut in San Diego but went on to stardom in New Orleans.  Perhaps an offense ran more suitable to his strengths with better offensive coaching could jumpstart a relatively promising career.  He’d have to be more sufficiently taught to protect the ball in the pocket, as well as getting rid of it quicker.

Stay tuned.

Ugh. Please no. Not Jason Campbell. I know we gotta take some risks now, but can’t we take a risk on a player that still has some potential? DRAFT A QB, DAMNIT!

The Ills should offer Donte “Whitless” and a 4th for Jason Campbell. Campbell is a good, but not great QB. The Ills currently have 3 so-so backup QBs at best. Trade for Campbell and cut Fitz…..

A fourth and Whitner for Campbell, what do you think this is fantasy football?

  4. ESPN Report: Bills are indeed interseted in Campbell : Buffalo Sports Daily

[...] Redskins, we immediately put out a post speculating that it shouldn’t take much time for the Buffalo Bills to express interest in restricted free agent quarterback Jason [...]

I would try to offer Whitless straight up for Campbell, but Whitless is so bad you need to add the 4th round pick!
