NU Softball Edged By Iona 3-1 in MAAC Tourney

  • Posted on May 14, 2010 at 6:00 am

Julie DiMatteo Niagara UniversityThe third-seeded Niagara Purple Eagles (21-21) fell in extra innings on a walkoff home run by the No. 2 seed Iona Gaels, 3-1, in the 2010 MAAC Championship First Round on a rainy Thursday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

“It was a great game,” head coach Al Dirschberger said.  “I thought we gave a great effort and played well all the way to the last play.”

Today’s game was a rematch of May 1st pitchers’ duel between Niagara’s Julie DiMatteo (14-6) and Iona’s Sarah Jackson (16-6) in which Iona escaped with a 3-2 win. Today’s game proved to be another battle between the two as DiMatteo put her 2-1 record and 0.72 ERA in MAAC Tournament games on the line.

Bandits: Corbeil named to NLL All-Rookie Team

  • Posted on May 13, 2010 at 2:10 pm

buffalo bandits logoThe National Lacrosse League today announced Buffalo Bandits defenseman Chris Corbeil has been named to the 2010 NLL All-Rookie Team.

Corbeil (6’3”, London, ON), was selected in the second-round (15th overall) and played in 12 regular season games this season, and one playoff contest. He posted nine points (3+6) in his debut season with Buffalo. The left-handed defenseman was one of only four NLL rookies to register a short-handed goal.

“I am extremely honored,” said an elated Corbeil. The ultra-competitive defenseman collected 81 loose balls this season, which was good for 3rd most among all rookies.

Bills DT McCargo needs a change of scenery

  • Posted on May 13, 2010 at 7:10 am

John McCargo Buffalo Sports DailyIt was slightly over four years ago now that the Buffalo Bills were trading picks with the Chicago Bears in order to move back into the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft to pick DT John McCargo. Playing between future pros Mario Williams and Manny Lawson at North Carolina State, the 6′2″, 307-pound McCargo was thought by many to be a prospect of near-equal value to his two college teammates.

Buffalo made the move, selecting McCargo at No. 26 overall. Another defensive tackle wouldn’t be taken until 42 picks later, and no DT of impact was added until the fourth round (Cincinnati’s Domata Peko). Considered a second- or third-round pick, Buffalo might have been reaching in taking McCargo, but considering his pre-draft buzz, the move wasn’t terribly surprising to some. Coupled with fellow first-round pick S Donte Whitner, Buffalo had the two players around which it’d build its new Tampa 2 defense.

Canisius Volleyball Receives APR Public Recognition Award

  • Posted on May 13, 2010 at 6:05 am

Canisius College VolleyballFor the third time in the last four years, the Canisius College volleyball team has received an NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program public recognition award, the NCAA announced today. The public recognition awards are presented to the best academically performing teams that rank in the top 10 percent within their sport in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).

The Golden Griffins are the only MAAC volleyball team to receive the honor in 2009-10 and the only MAAC volleyball program to receive the award three times in the last four years. Canisius also received the award in 2006-07 and 2007-08.

“This is an outstanding public acknowledgement for the hard work and dedication the student-athletes in our volleyball program put forth in the classroom,” Canisius Director of Athletics Bill Maher said. “We are proud of our student-athletes for their efforts to balance their academic and athletic experiences and by our volleyball coaching staff’s emphasis to be recognized in the top 10 percent of the NCAA in the APR.

Shuttleworth to Start for New England Revolution

  • Posted on May 12, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Bobby ShuttleworthFormer University at Buffalo men’s soccer goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth will make his professional debut for Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution. On Wednesday, May 12, the Revolution will face the New York Red Bulls in a U.S. Open play-in match at Red Bull Arena with the kickoff set for 8:00 pm.

In his three seasons with the Bulls, Shuttleworth (2006-08) finished his career in the top spot for career goals against average with a 0.80 GAA. After a successful career with the Bulls, the Tonawanda, NY native decided to forgo his senior season and sign with the Revolution.

A 2008 second-team All-MAC selection, Shuttleworth was selected to the All-Tournament squad in the 2007 season. Shuttleworth put together a stellar regular season in 2008 with a 0.64 goals against average in 18 matches while recording eight individual shutouts. He anchored a UB defense that posted seven straight shutouts and a streak of 680 consecutive scoreless minutes, which was the longest active streak in the nation when it was halted.

Bills fans hate Willis McGahee

  • Posted on May 12, 2010 at 3:22 pm

Buffalo Bills PollWe posted a poll a couple of days ago asking readers who is the most hated Buffalo Bills player over the past decade and listed five candidates to choose from.  Jason Peters, Marshawn Lynch, J.P. Losman and Trent Edwards were four of them.

Combine them all and they still don’t measure up to Willis McGahee.

Fans have spoken and your loathe for McGahee is as strong as ever.  With over 1,900 total votes casted, McGahee pulled a remarkable 55% majority of the vote.  Losman was a distant second at 19% while Peters garnered 16% of your vote.

Lynch, who I suspect would receive a much higher voting total if this poll is revisited in a couple of years, pulled eight percent of the vote while only two percent of you despise Edwards the most.

Brooks resigns to join Canisius coaching staff

  • Posted on May 12, 2010 at 6:00 am

St. Bonaventure women’s basketball head coach Jim Crowley has announced that assistant coach Jacey Brooks has resigned to accept a similar position at Canisius.

Brooks spent three years on the Bonnies staff including this past season as an assistant coach after serving as the director of basketball operations for her first two years. A search for her successor is underway.

“Jacey has given us three great years on the staff and we will certainly miss her,” said Crowley.  “We would have not achieved our recent success without her and wish her the best of luck in her new opportunity.”

Craig’s Corner: Brohm’s time is now

  • Posted on May 12, 2010 at 12:01 am

Craig Sutton Column Call me crazy…but Brian Brohm is the reason the Bills didn’t draft a quarterback until half the NFL teams were packing up their respective war rooms.

Yeah, I know, Brian Brohm? Isn’t that the same kid who looked lost last year in his only start against the Atlanta Falcons, tossing a pair of ugly interceptions with no touchdowns and a sub-50.0 QB Rating?

Say what you want, I think this was the right way to go.

At six-foot-three in height, by most accounts Brohm has the arm strength to deal with the weather. Some have compared him to a larger version of Drew Brees. What appealed most to me about him are his high scores in the Wonderlic, an intelligence test given to athletes, and that he is noted to have a solid command of his huddle without the drama.

Lacrosse: Timon Flexes Muscle in 16-1 Demolition of Canisius

  • Posted on May 11, 2010 at 11:27 pm

Timon LacrosseIt’s one of the oldest clichés in sports, “losing was the best thing that could have happened.”  But sometimes clichés are actually cliché because they hold a lot of truth, and in the case of Bishop Timon’s lacrosse team, their loss to West Seneca East two weeks ago may just have been that loss.

Since being upset by the Trojans, Timon have only conceded nine goals in four games and on Tuesday night Timon sent a reminder that they are still one of the best teams in Western New York after a 16-1 trouncing of Monsignor Martin rivals Canisius.

The most impressive part of Timon’s win is the fact that Syracuse-bound Chris Kane did not find the net.  Instead it was freshman Tommy Gioia, junior Sam Connors and many others contributing on offense, while junior Brian Sullivan, the best long pole defender in Western New York, showed again why the University of North Carolina cannot wait to get him to Chapel Hill.

First Take airs weekdays on ESPN2 beginning at 10 am.

Report: Bills work out Kyle Eckel

  • Posted on May 11, 2010 at 3:25 pm

Kyle EckelAccording to Aaron Wilson of the Ravens Insider, the Buffalo Bills worked out veteran fullback Kyle Eckel this morning at One Bills Drive.

Eckel, 28, has played for five teams since entering the league as an undrafted free agent originally signed by the New England Patriots.  He’s also spent time with Miami, New England a second time, Philadelphia and New Orleans.

For his career he has 59 carries for 175 yard and two touchdowns.  His best year was with New England in 2007 when he ran for 90 yards and scored both of his touchdowns.

Eckel is perhaps best known for getting expelled from Navy while playing football there.

The only true fullback the Bills currently have on the roster is incumbent Corey McIntyre.

And hey, at least he has a Super Bowl ring after being a member of the Saints last year.

Kennedy struggling for U.S. in World Championships

  • Posted on May 11, 2010 at 12:37 pm

World Hockey ChampionshipsBuffalo Sabres Tim Kennedy was placed on the United States roster for the World Championships currently taking place in Germany.  Unfortunately for the South Buffalo native, it’s been anything but a pleasant experience thus far.

Kennedy has been held scoreless in his first two games, a theme that’s become too common with the rest of his American teammates.  The U.S. has scored just two goals total in a pair of overtime losses to Denmark and Germany.

Over the two games Kennedy has managed just one shot on goal while averaging 13:30 of ice time and is a minus-one.

Canisius’ Moser reflects on Empire State Games

  • Posted on May 11, 2010 at 9:27 am

Scott MoserWestern New York athlete Scott Moser has built quite an impressive resume over the past seven years throughout his high school and collegiate career. Being a multi-sport athlete and an outstanding scholar in the classroom, Moser has had many accomplishments and experiences when it comes to Western New York sports.

One of those experiences he’ll never forget is participating and winning a gold medal in the Empire State Games.

Moser, a Tonawanda native, played on the Western Men’s Scholastic hockey team in the 2006 games. He was selected after having a great year helping lead his Kenmore West high school team to a Western New York Federation Hockey Championship.

Bisons fall for fourth time in five games

  • Posted on May 11, 2010 at 8:24 am

Tejada Buffalo BisonsThe Bisons’ bullpen woes continued on Monday night in a 7-6 loss to the Louisville Bats from Louisville Slugger Field.

Luis Terrero’s hit a three-run home run off of Bobby Parnell in the bottom of the seventh inning to send Buffalo to their fourth loss in the last five days.

Parnell entered the game for Pat Misch with one out in the seventh inning. The southpaw starter allowed four runs on six hits but left with a 6-4 lead.

Parnell walked Chris Burke on six pitches before Zack Cozart singled sharply to right on an 0-2 pitch. With the game-tying runs on base, Terrero jumped all over the first pitch he saw from Parnell and drove it to deep centerfield for his first home run of the season.

  • Posted on May 11, 2010 at 8:18 am

Mike GoemansCanisius College senior Mike Goemans (Guelph, Ontario) was one of eight players – and one of three pitchers – honored as a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Monday.

Goemans threw a one-hit shutout of Manhattan in the final game of the Golden Griffins’ weekend sweep, a 4-0 victory at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday. Goemans allowed a second-inning single, walked a batter in the third inning and also hit a batter in the third before retiring the final 19 Manhattan batters to complete the shutout victory.

It was the first one-hitter by a Canisius pitcher since Mike Bax on April 9, 2005 and first one-hit, nine-inning shutout by a Golden Griffin in the last 20 years. Goemans, a 2009 all-MAAC Second-Team selection, improved to 5-3 on the season and has a 4.36 ERA, the lowest ERA among the Canisius starting pitchers.

Former Buffalo Bill Duke Preston retires

  • Posted on May 10, 2010 at 4:57 pm

duke-prestonAccording to CBS Sports, former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Duke Preston has retired from the NFL. He must recently played for the Dallas Cowboys.

Preston was a fourth-round pick of the Bills in 2005 after a stellar college career at Illinois.  As a rookie he appeared in every game for Buffalo, starting in one and appearing mostly on special teams.

In 2006 he started eight games and started in 11 during his final year in 2008.  Most fans will remember Preston’s stupidity at the end of the first half in the 2008 season finale against New England.  As the Bills were driving for a late score with no timeouts remaining, Preston got caught up tangling with a Patriots defender.  Failing to realize time was winding down on the clock, Preston didn’t get back to the line in time and the clock expired to end the first half with Buffalo being shut off the scoreboard. They’d go on to lose the game, 13-0.

Aaron Schobel has sold his Orchard Park home

  • Posted on May 10, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Aaron Schobel Buffalo Sports DailyWhile it doesn’t automatically mean his career in Buffalo is over, I can confirm that Buffalo Bills defensive star Aaron Schobel has sold his Orchard Park home.

The Buffalo News listed the property on their transactions page Monday and I can confirm through a representative at the real estate firm that sold the house that the property belonged to Schobel and has been sold.

According to my source the house was put on the market in late December of 2009 and was purchased and closed on in early April of this year, even though it wasn’t listed in official  transactions until today. The source also said that Schobel hasn’t asked about the availability of any homes in the area to purchase.

Another source very close to Schobel insists that the Buffalo Bill truly still hasn’t decided if he’s going to play again or not in 2010.

“His wife and three kids lived in the Orchard Park home and are moving back to Texas.  If Aaron plays the family is going to stay behind in Texas.”

Rassow racks up lacrosse honors at St. John Fisher

  • Posted on May 10, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Erich RassowHard work and passion have allowed Orchard Park’s Erich Rassow to transform into one of the premier faceoff specialists in Division III college lacrosse.

The St. John Fisher College junior and 2007 graduate of Orchard Park was named the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week on April 13, in addition to receiving the Empire Eight Conference Player of the Week honors for the week ending April 11.

Rassow, a management major, is Fisher’s primary faceoff man, taking 388 of 450 chances. By winning an incredible 70.1 percent of his faceoffs, his success helped the Cardinals to a 16-2 record this season.

“If your team can get the ball and possess the ball for most of the game and dictate the speed of the game, you have a great advantage in determining the outcome,” Rassow said in a recent interview.

Vegas: Bills least favored to win AFC, most to land Russell

  • Posted on May 10, 2010 at 10:02 am

Nearly all of the media and even the Buffalo Bills fans think the team contending in 2010 is a long shot.  Las Vegas completely agrees.

Vegas Insider.com has its 2010 NFL odds out and Buffalo is listed at 120/1 to be crowned Super Bowl XLV champions.  Only the St. Louis Rams are a bigger underdog, listed at 150/1.

The Bills are a 60/1 long shot to win the AFC championship, the least-favored team in the conference.

Indianapolis is the betting pick to win the Super Bowl at 13/2.  Dallas and New Orleans are tied for second at 8 to 1.

In sticking with the Vegas odds theme, bodog.com has the Bills co-favored with the Arizona Cardinals at 7/ 2 to sign recently released quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

(We’ll bet against that)
