Joe Ferguson, QB (Third round pick, 57th overall in 1973 NFL draft)
Since Jim Kelly retired following the 1996 season, nine different quarterbacks have led the Buffalo Bills in passing yards; not exactly a model for consistency.
That certainly wasn’t the case from 1973-84. In those days, Buffalo had one quarterback lead the team for a dozen years. His name was Joe Ferguson.
Ferguson was groomed for success in college while at the University of Arkansas. There, he was an All-Southwest Conference quarterback, the Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year and the MVP of the 1971 Liberty Bowl. He passed for 4.431 career yards in an extremely run-oriented offense and later became a member of the Razorbacks’ All-Decade team for the 1970’s.
