After losing to the Indians behind a six run tenth inning last night, the Herd fell again to the Indians in extras by losing 7-3 at Coca-Cola Field in 12 innings.
Following two scoreless innings in the tenth and eleventh the Indians jumped on the Bisons for four runs in the twelfth to get the win. Sparked by a two-run double from first baseman Jeff Clement, the Indians avoided a series split with the Herd by taking three of the four games in Buffalo.
The Indians scored their four runs off of Bisons pitcher Adam Pettyjohn after no team was able to score on Pettyjohn in the previous seven games. The loss now drops the Herd’s record to 4-4 in games that go beyond nine innings.

FC Buffalo felt the sting of controversy in last weekend’s 1-0 road loss to FC Sonic in Lehigh Valley, Penn.
They didn’t leave any room for a referee’s decision this time, earning a 2-0 win.
The Blitzers (2-1-2) handed the Sonic (4-0-1) its first loss of the season with book-end goals in the 16th and 80th minutes, but the real story was goalkeeper Dan Panaro, who made a remarkable 13 saves in a Northtowns Orthopedics’ Man of the Match performance.

In the NFL, division games are (usually) the tightest, most closely-contested battles of the season – even when a league juggernaut is playing a league doormat. Any NFL player or coach will tell you that if you want to win big in this league, you have to win in your own division.
That’s something that the Buffalo Bills have struggled to accomplish in recent seasons. After sweeping both the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets to finish with a 4-2 in-division record in 2007, the Bills have won just two of their last 12 games against their biggest rivals. The team’s struggles with the New England Patriots are also well documented, as the Bills have beaten New England just once in their last 17 tries, with that victory coming in 2003.

Coming into the Bisons second game of a four game series with the Indianapolis Indians, right fielder Valentino Pascucci had four home runs. The slugger nearly doubled his season total in one game as he homered three times in a 6-4 win at Coca-Cola field tonight.
After being shut out last night, Pascucci and the Herd got to work early. Pascucci started off the offensive attack in the game in the first inning by hitting his first home run of the night. The right fielder took a 3-2 pitch from Indians starter Brian Burres deep to left and high enough that it cleared the screen that guards the street running behind Coca-Cola Field. The three run blast was good enough to give the Bisons an early 3-0 lead.

Rodney McKissic at the Buffalo news is reporting that UB football head coach Jeff Quinn will have another quarterback to choose from this August. In addition to Jerry Davis, redshirt freshman Alex Dennison, Alex Zordich and Rudy Johnson, UB will also give preferred walk on Tyler Warden a crack at the job.
Warden, who hails Glenbard West High School in suburban Chicago, lost some stock with recruiters because he was not the starter during his junior year. He sat behind 2009 Starter, Evan Watkins, who received offers from Iowa, Northwestern and Northern Illinois. When Warden finally got the chance to start in 2010, he made the most of his opportunity.

(We’re counting down our list of the best 20 Buffalo Bills draft picks of all-time. Take note- this is not a rundown of the best 20 players. Where the player was drafted is often a major factor in determining his value and ranking. Today is number five on our list, Jim Kelly)
Jim Kelly, Quarterback (1st round pick, 14th overall in 1983 NFL draft)
It’s pretty ironic that Jim Kelly is revered as one of, if not the most popular Buffalo Bill players in the history of the organization. An icon during his playing days who became a first-ballot Hall of Famer, Kelly has remained a central part of the Western New York community and continues to call Buffalo home long since his playing days ended.
I say it’s ironic because had the United States Football League not went belly up in 1987; Kelly may have went down as one of the area’s all-time biggest villains.

I just read a report that the NFL Players Association and the league just had a meeting involving the likelihood of adapting an 18-game schedule. If this new schedule goes down, it’s going to change a couple of things about the way your NFL team prepares on and off the field.
7) Games at neutral sites
For the last few seasons, the Bills have always gloated about being able to sell over 53,000 season tickets. However, one of factors involved with selling so many season tickets is that buyers only have to purchase seven home games, while the 8th home game takes place in Toronto. That sort of international experiment that the Bills have used makes me think that the NFL is going to adopt a similar philosophy. Look for multiple regular season games to take place in venues from China to Mexico. The NFL is all about making as much money as possible. I assure you, that money can come in the form of pesos or Euros.

The Buffalo Bills have had 27 instances when a running back has rushed for 1,000 or more yards in a season.
Did you know that five of them have been by running backs that have only achieved the feat just once: Antowain Smith (1,124 in 1998), Greg Bell (1,100 in 1984), Cookie Gilchrist (1,096 in 1962), Fred Jackson (1,062 in 2009) and Terry Miller (1,060 in 1978).
The guys who have done it multiple times: Thurman Thomas (eight times), O.J. Simpson (five), Joe Cribbs (three times), Travis Henry (twice), Marshawn Lynch (twice) and Willis McGahee (twice).
The Carolina Hurricanes hold a League-high 11 picks of the 210 allotted for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, to be held Friday, June 25 (round 1) and Saturday, June 26 (rounds 2-7) at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. The Edmonton Oilers, owners of the first overall selection, and the New York Islanders follow with 10 picks apiece.
The Los Angeles Kings, hosting the Entry Draft for the first time in franchise history, are scheduled to make the first of nine current selections in front of their hometown crowd with the 19th overall choice.
The Buffalo Sabres are slated to have nine picks during the draft, including a first (23rd overall) and three third rounders (#68, 75, 83). They do not own a second round pick.

(We’re counting down our list of the best 20 Buffalo Bills draft picks of all-time. Take note- this is not a rundown of the best 20 players. Where the player was drafted is often a major factor in determining his value and ranking. Today is number six on our list, Mike Stratton)
Mike Stratton, Linebacker (13th round pick in 1962 AFL draft).
A select few Buffalo Bills players are defined by a single play. Don Beebe’s hustle to track down Leon Lett in the Super Bowl debacle against Dallas is one of them. Unfortunately, Scott Norwood is undeservedly defined by his Super Bowl game-winning miss against the Giants. Ronnie Harmon will forever be known for his drop on the second last play in the 1989 wild card loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Perhaps more than anyone else’s, Mike Stratton’s brilliant career is still defined by a single play— “The Hit Heard Round the World”.

Six University at Buffalo Track and Field athletes have been named to the 2010 Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC team. Included in the list of UB athletes are two outdoor MAC Champions and four student-athletes that were also honored during the indoor season.
On the men’s side four Bulls were honored, including Shaun Brummert, Casey Garbaty, Jake Madonia and Brian Smith. NCAA Championship qualifier Tiffany Maskulinski and Jackie Burns were both honored on the women’s side.
Brummert, a pharmacy major with a 3.762 GPA, set the school record in the 800-meter run at the MAC Championships with a time of 1:50.97 to finish third. He was also part of the 4×400 relay that finished fourth at the conference championship. Brummert was an Academic All-MAC selection during the indoor season as well.

Since their inception, the Buffalo Bills have only had someone go over 1,000 yards receiving in a season 16 times.
Did you know that only two times have the Bills had a pair of 1,000-yard receivers in the same season? Most recently it was done by Eric Moulds (1,292) and Peerless Price (1,252) in 2002. The other time was back in 1991 when both Andre Reed (1,113) and James Lofton (1,072) accomplished the milestone.
Of the 16 times someone has went over 1,000, Reed and Moulds have both done it four times. Lee Evans and Frank Lewis have done it twice each. Price, Lofton, Elbert Dubenion and Marlon Briscoe have each done it once.
According to a report in the Florida Sun Sentinel, the Florida Panthers are close to trading right winger Nathan Horton and the Buffalo Sabres are a very interested party.
In the report, Horton’s agent Paul Krepelka was quoted as saying “It would not surprise me at all if he’s dealt by the draft. If it happens, it happens.”
Horton has three years left on a six-year, $24 million contract extension signed with the Panthers just before the 2007 draft.
He has a no-trade clause that won’t kick in until July 1.
The report said the Sabres would be willing to deal Derek Roy or Tim Connolly in exchange for Horton, who story author Steve Gorten says the Sabres could envision playing on the top line with Thomas Vanek.
Horton had 20 goals last season, despite missing 17 games with a broken leg.
We’re pretty sure very few Buffalo fans would mind Roy and/or Connolly being shown the door in exchange for Horton.
Thanks to our colleague Dave Davis for finding the report this morning.

The American Hockey League announced their divisional alignment for the upcoming season.
The league, who is celebrating their 75th anniversary, will welcome two new cities into the league as Oklahoma City and Charlotte will have new franchises to give the AHL 30 teams for the first time in its history.
Another change will see the Lowell Devils relocate to Albany, NY as the Albany Devils.
The Portland Pirates (Buffalo Sabres affiliate) will remain in the Atlantic Division along with six other teams Manchester, Worcester, Providence, Springfield, Hartford and Bridgeport.

The Buffalo Bills continue to get their work in collectively as a team at OTA and following practice today, head coach Chan Gailey spoke to the media on a variety of topics, including the situation at running back and quarterback as well as Aaron Schobel, the offensive line and good competition at linebacker.
While Gailey will never be mistaken for Jim Mora or Dick Vermeil, his honesty and willingness to provide detailed answers to questions is a far cry from the days of Dick Jauron. In fact, I can’t even explain the differences in words—kind of sad considering I’m a writer (of sorts).
Anyway, as expected a majority of the questions Gailey fielded centered around Marshawn Lynch and how the running back situation is expected to play out over the summer.

Bruce Smith, Defensive End (First overall pick, 1985 NFL draft)
Just as we clarified previously with O.J. Simpson, it’s time to reiterate that had this been a straightforward countdown of the 20 best Buffalo Bills players of all-time, we’d likely be having a hell of debate between Simpson and Bruce Smith as to who would top the list. But one more time, for the purpose of this exercise, draft value is of tremendous importance. Therefore, just like Simpson, Smith cannot top this particular list of Bills all-time draft picks.

University at Buffalo pitcher Chaz Mye has signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Athletics. The signing of Mye marks the fourth straight year that a UB player has signed on with a major league club. Mye will report to the Athletics’ complex in Arizona at the end of the week.
Mye tied for the team lead in wins and led the Bulls in innings pitched at 78.0. He also struck out a team-high 54 batters on the season. A transfer from Lake Sumter Community College, Mye pitched two seasons for the Bulls, helping the team reach 43 wins over the last two seasons.

Yesterday we spoke of the Buffalo Bills historical success against the Green Bay Packers. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the team should never want to see San Diego on the schedule.
Did you know that of all the teams in the NFL, The Chargers own the highest winning percentage of anyone against the Bills? Thirty two times the teams have squared off and Buffalo has gone just 10-20-2 against them, although the Bills won the last time the teams met in Buffalo, 23-14 in 2008. In total, Buffalo has a winning percentage head-to-head of just .333.
San Diego isn’t on the Buffalo 2010 schedule. Few Bills fans are likely to complain about that.
◊ Marcus Easley has been faring well for the Buffalo Bills during OTA’s, writes Chris Brown from Bills.com.
◊ Speaking of Easley, Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports he’s signed a four-year deal with the Bills that includes a signing bonus of about $520,000.
◊ Matt Rich Warren from Buffalo Rumblings provides an analysis of recent 3-4 defensive transitions.
◊ According to the USA Today, the Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey have an old school plan to fix the Buffalo Bills.
