Buffalo’s home away from home has helped the club win three straight.
Norfolk’s Harbor Park continued to be friendly confines for Bisons hitters as the Herd won their third straight road game over the Tides, 8-6, on Sunday afternoon. J.R. House and Russ Adams both went deep to put Buffalo in position for a four-game sweep on Monday afternoon.
The Bisons success on the road in Norfolk has truly been amazing. With the three wins this weekend, the Herd is now 35-16 all time at Harbor Park -good for a whopping .686 winning percentage.

He’s so close now he can literally taste it.
South Buffalo native Patrick Kane is one victory away from celebrating a Stanley Cup after the Chicago Black Hawks defeated Philadelphia 7-4 on Sunday night to take a 3-2 series lead.
After having a mostly miserable series that includes a minus-four +/- rating in their 5-3 game four loss Friday night that evened the series, Kane bounced back last night with a goal and an assist.
He has two goals and three assists in the Stanley Cup finals and nine goals and 16 assists this postseason.
Game six is in Philadelphia on Wednesday night. If there is a game seven, it will be in Chicago on Friday night. The Black Hawks have not won the Stanley Cup since 1961.
We’re undergoing website maintenance and construction this weekend and won’t be able to post any stories while doing so. When completed, the website will be easier and faster to navigate through.
We will be back up and running again on Monday morning, with new features. We apologize for any inconvenience during this process and look forward to being up and running after this weekend.
(We’re counting down our list of the best 20 Buffalo Bills draft picks of all-time. Take note- this is not a rundown of the best 20 players. Where the player was drafted is often a major factor in determining his value and ranking. Today is No. 14 our list, Joe Ferguson)
Joe Ferguson, QB (Third round pick, 57th overall in 1973 NFL draft)
Since Jim Kelly retired following the 1996 season, nine different quarterbacks have led the Buffalo Bills in passing yards; not exactly a model for consistency.
That certainly wasn’t the case from 1973-84. In those days, Buffalo had one quarterback lead the team for a dozen years. His name was Joe Ferguson.
Ferguson was groomed for success in college while at the University of Arkansas. There, he was an All-Southwest Conference quarterback, the Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year and the MVP of the 1971 Liberty Bowl. He passed for 4.431 career yards in an extremely run-oriented offense and later became a member of the Razorbacks’ All-Decade team for the 1970’s.

For the second straight year, the St. Mary’s High School girl’s softball team journeyed to New York City in search of a Catholic state championship. For the second straight year, they travel back to Lancaster empty-handed.
The girls didn’t bring their “A” game with them, losing in the semifinal on Tuesday to Archbishop Molloy High School, 7-2. The Lancers hurt themselves throughout with a lack of hitting and untimely errors.
St. Mary’s committed three errors in the game, two of them in the second inning which allowed two unearned runs to score on pitcher Lauren Wesolowski; giving Malloy an early lead they never relinquished.

Aaron Schobel, DE (Second round pick, 46th overall in 2001 NFL draft)
If you’re a Buffalo Bills fanatic and haven’t resided under a rock over the past decade, you’ll know that Tom Donahoe didn’t exactly revitalize this franchise when he took over as general manager for John Butler in 2001. During his five-year tenure as the Bills primary and often lone decision maker, Donahoe’s blunders, predominantly during the NFL draft are too many to mention.
But we will anyway—at least a few of them.

After first breaking the story that top Buffalo Sabres prospect Zack Kassian was arrested on an assault charge over the Memorial Day weekend, Dalson Chen of the same newspaper is reporting that the arrest could cause Kassian to be denied entry into the United States and put his pro career in doubt.
“If an individual has an assault charge on their record, they’d be found inadmissible into the United States,” said Chief Ron Smith of U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Chen’s report. “There are ways to mitigate that, primarily through the Department of State which issues visas. “But under normal circumstances, initially, the individual would be inadmissible in the United States for the assault charge.”
Kassian was arrested after a fight early Sunday at The Beach Sports Bar and Grill by Windsor police.

Adam Caplan of Scout.com, citing a league source, reported earlier Wednesday that Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch had arrived in Orchard Park. If Caplan’s source is accurate, then Lynch is in Orchard Park, but not a team headquarters.
WGR 550 is reporting that Lynch is once again absent from Organized Team Activities today.
These workouts are voluntary. Buffalo began full-team OTAs last week under new head coach Chan Gailey. Lynch has not participated in any team activities since the close of the 2009 season.
Lynch, according to a report from Yahoo, planned on reporting to OTAs late last week, but that obviously didn’t happen. While Lynch isn’t facing any repercussions for missing these activities, this decision of his isn’t doing him any favors in the court of public opinion.

Fred Smerlas, DT (Drafted in second round, #32 overall in 1979 NFL draft)
Going into 1979 the Buffalo Bills were a lot of things. AFC cellar dwellers were among them. Over the previous three seasons the franchise combined to go just 10-34. Becoming a playoff team seemed an impossibility headed into the next decade.
That fortune began to change when the Bills drafted a fun loving; Greek nose tackle from Boston College named Fred Smerlas in the second round (32nd overall) of the ’79 draft.

Misch improved to 5-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.83 -ninth best in the International League. He allowed just five hits and no walks while tying a season-high with seven punchouts. The lone run he allowed in the sixth inning was the only base runner to advance past third base all night.
Misch retired 16 of the first 19 batters he faced. Overall, he threw 71 of his 100 pitches for strikes. The quality start was his team-leading seventh of the year, and his fifth consecutive.
With Misch’s dominance on the mound, the Bisons scored the only runs they would need in the first inning. Hessman knocked in his 54th of the season with an RBI grounder. Three pitches later, Jacobs crushed a 2-0 pitch from Chiefs’ starter Shairon Martis into the berm in right-center for a two-run homer.

One of the delightful things about South Shore golf course is that it provides a mixture of challenges and opportunity for golfers of all skill levels. For every hole that has you scratching your head if you fail to make par, there’s another waiting that’ll have you fist pumping if your score matches what the scorecard says it should.
As is the case with most public courses, South Shore has a number of holes that hardly will test how far your game has come along. But as I’m rapidly learning with most courses where anyone with a set of a clubs and a few bucks in their pocket can play, the trials and tribulations that lie on these greens are as strenuous as the prestigious clubs you must be a member to play at.

Nate Odomes, CB (drafted in second round, 29th overall in 1987)
Headed into his second season as Buffalo Bills general manager in 1987, Bill Polian knew he needed to draft more talented defenders. The Bills were coming off a 4-12 season the year before; a campgain that saw them surrender 348 points to the opposition.
One of the positions the franchise needed the most help at was cornerback. Charles Romes’ playing days in Buffalo were coming to an end and with just Derrick Burroughs and Rodney Bellinger in tow; game-changing impact was hardly sitting on the roster.

Marshawn Lynch sat down to talk with the San Francisco Chronicle on television last week. It serves as evidence they did claim he would show up for OTA’s, as Mike Silver of Yahoo Sports originally reported, which of course he did not follow through on.
No word on if he plans on showing up for this week’s activities.
Here are some of the highlights:
On when he plans on returning to Buffalo.
“I plan to get there at the end of this week to get back there and get acclimated with my teammates. Get back in the building, man and go show this pretty smile back in Buffalo. Lift up the spirits.”
On how close he came to getting traded and dialogue with Buddy Nix
“We had a conversation about it and they let me know pretty much that that wasn’t going to happen. From there I took it as, alright I ain’t going anywhere so what is next? Now I know I’m going to be in Buffalo so my mindset is stay focused on what I got going there and hopefully get this thing going and get some games won.”

If you critique the FC Buffalo Blitzers soccer debut this past weekend solely by the scoreboard, you’re going to give it a failing grade. In its National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) this past Saturday at All-High Stadium, the team was held off the scoreboard in a 3-0 shutout loss to the high powered Erie Admirals, a team that made the league championship game last season.
Buffalo seemed outgun from the opening seconds and were nearly behind just 28 seconds into the game; a rarity for outdoor soccer. They were down a pair before halftime, never really in the game and finally put out of misery in the 72nd minute. They didn’t threaten at all in the first half, only did a handful of times in the second and when they did, were shut down by Erie goaltender Danny Mudd.
But for now at least, the real story wasn’t what happened on the playing field. High level soccer is back in the Queen City and fans who crave the sport are past appreciative. They’re simply fanatical.

The Buffalo Sabres keep adding prospects to the fold, which will make training camp in both Buffalo and Portland very interesting.
With the deadline looming on Tuesday for signing 2008 CHL draftees, the Sabres have signed Jacob Lagace to a three-year entry-level contract.
Lagace, 20, had been mulling over the offer from the Sabres before deciding to sign. If he failed reach an agreement with the Sabres by the deadline, he would have gone back to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for another season as an overager, but that’s a thing of the past now as he’s expected to play Portland this year.
