Bona’s Hoenicke Named A-10 Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week

  • Posted on September 13, 2010 at 5:52 pm

St. Bona LogoFreshman defender Courtney Hoenicke has been tabbed as the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the week ending September 12, 2010, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

Hoenicke led the Bonnies to a pair of road victories as St. Bonaventure improved to 4-3-0 on the year.  The freshman defender was at the forefront of the Bonnie backline that limited the opposition, over the two games this past weekend, to just four shots on goal with only one finding the back of the net.  The Mason, Ohio native also registered the game-winning assist in a 1-0 win over Colgate, finding Courtney Bosse in the 29th minute for the lone goal of the match.  The two weekend victories and the plus-three goal differential netted the Bonnies a tie for first place with Seton Hall in the final Invitational standings.  Since solidifying the back line, Hoenicke has helped St. Bonaventure to a 3-1-0 record posting two shutouts and allowing just three goals during that span.

Prior to Wallace’s stint at NCCC he worked for the Niagara Wheatfield school system in various administrative positions and owns that school’s record for career wins in girls softball and basketball. Wallace also served as a member of NW’s football coaching staff through the 1980’s and 90’s.

Is Kawika Mitchell Done in Buffalo For Good?

  • Posted on September 13, 2010 at 5:35 pm

Kawika MitchellKawika Mitchell’s last 12 months as a Buffalo Bill have unfortunately been littered with injuries.  After missing all but five games last season with a knee injury, Mitchell was on the right track to contributing in 2010.  Despite losing his starting spot to free agent acquisition Andra Davis, Mitchell was counted on to see a lot of snaps and play in both the team’s 3-4 and 4-3 scheme’s, primarily as a pass rusher.  That ended about a week before the season when a toe injury forced the club to place him on injured reserve.

Now it could be that not only his Bills season over, but possibly his career with the organization as well.

While fielding questions Sunday night following Buffalo’s loss to Miami from fans via his twitter, Mitchell was asked when he’ll back.

BSD’s 2010 Buffalo Bills Predictions

  • Posted on September 12, 2010 at 3:03 am

Bills HelmetAre you ready for some predictions? I am— let’s get right at it, since there’s nothing better than looking back four months from now and seeing how silly you looked in September.

◊ Here is something you haven’t read much elsewhere.  Even though he isn’t starting, I STILL think Aaron Maybin will have a breakout season in 2010.  Second stringers or not, I really like the way he looked in the second half of the preseason.  He’s showing signs of “getting it” and I feel that as the season moves on the coaches will gain confidence of him and he’ll make an impact.  Six sacks sounds like a good number.

◊ If you’re a Bills fan, you’re going to want to pull your hair out from your head on a weekly basis when you learn how terrible our linebackers are in pass coverage.  If I run a fantasy team, I’m starting whatever running back and tight end the Bills are facing each week and banking on big receiver numbers.

Week One NFL Power Rankings

  • Posted on September 12, 2010 at 2:05 am

nflinq2As we kick off the start of the 2010 NFL season today, we present our first weekly NFL Power Ranking Poll.

1. Baltimore Ravens: I love the way the Ravens look this year.  Their front seven defensively is among the best in football, but it’s their offense that has me thinking big things.  Joe Flacco should continue to progress and he’ll have plenty of help from receiver Anquan Boldin.  Ray Rice is ready to become a huge star at running back. They’re as tough to beat as it comes.

2. New Orleans Saints: Opening night win against Minnesota showed the team can win with defense when the offense isn’t clicking.

3. Green Bay Packers:  Aaron Rodgers is my preseason frontrunner for the MVP award.  Packers are explosive on both sides of the ball.

  • Posted on September 12, 2010 at 12:52 am

Devonte ShannonBaylor quarterback Robert Griffin III is considered one of the most electrifying running quarterbacks in the nation. On Saturday night at William Casey Stadium, Griffin III beat Buffalo with his arm before 40,853 fans.

Bills I.R. Mitchell, Sign Ayodele

  • Posted on September 10, 2010 at 11:14 am

StoryFor the second consecutive season, Buffalo Bills linebacker Kawika Mitchell has seen his season come to a premature end.  This time it’s ended before it even started as the team officially placed him on injured reserve Friday morning with a lingering toe injury.

To take his place on the roster the team signed linebacker Akin Adoyele.

Mitchell played in just five games in 2009 before  missing the rest of the season with an injured knee.  He signed with the Bills as a free agent from the New York Giants in 2008 but his first season has been his only full year with the club.  Mitchell was expected to backup starters Paul Posluszny and Andra Davis on the inside of their 3-4 defense.  Keith Ellison and rookie Arthur Moats may now step up into a more prominent role.

Adoyele is an eight-year veteran who’s spent time with Jacksonville and Dallas and the past two seasons with Miami.  He signed with Denver this offseason but was cut in late August.

He has 9.5 career sacks and seven interceptions.

  • Posted on September 9, 2010 at 6:38 am

Griffs HoopsThe Canisius College athletic department has announced the men’s basketball non-conference schedule for the 2010-11 season. The current 29 game slate features five home non-league dates and the upcoming year marks just the third time in school history where the Golden Griffins will play host to all three of their local rivals, starting Friday, Nov. 12, when the Blue and Gold takes on St. Bonaventure in the season opener.

“Obviously we are excited about this year’s non-league schedule and hosting all of our local rivals on campus will be great for our students, our alumni and our local fan base,” Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. “When you put it all together, I truly believe this will give us the chance to become a better basketball team as we move forward to conference play.”

The season-opener against the Bonnies will be the backend of a basketball doubleheader, with the Canisius women’s team kicking off the hoops year with a non-league game against Kent State in the Koessler Athletic Center at 6 p.m., on the night of Nov. 12. Tickets are currently on sale for the doubleheader by calling the Ticket Office at 716-888-2885 or by clicking this link. Howard Took The Hard Path to Make Bills Roster

  • Posted on September 8, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Cordaro Howard Buffalo BillsWhether you join one of the elite teams in the National Football League or one mired in mediocrity, the path is basically the same; if you’re not drafted and forced to go the undrafted free agent route to make a roster, the odds of seeing your name on the back of a NFL jersey come opening day are monstrously diminutive.

Cordaro Howard sat around draft weekend last April and waited for his name to be called. By the time the annual spectacle was over, 256 prospects had become a member of an NFL franchise.

Howard wasn’t among them.

Obviously disappointed, Howard briefly felt the sting of getting passed over by 32 teams.  But rather than have it deter him from his goal of playing in the NFL, Howard immediately scrutinized what organizations would give him the best opportunity to prove his worth and soon after he was on a plane headed to Buffalo to sign with the Buffalo Bills.r

Bills Add Leon to Practice Squad

  • Posted on September 8, 2010 at 11:59 am

The Buffalo Bills announced they have added tight end DajLeon to their practice team, using up their eighth and final spot on the squad.

Farr was an undrafted free agent out of Memphis who spent the preseason fighting for a spot on the Dallas Cowboys roster.  He had two catches for 26 yards for Dallas before being among their final 20 cuts last Saturday.

The Bills have two healthy tight ends on their roster right now; Jonathan Stupar and David Martin.  Shawn Nelson will miss the first four games of the season because of a suspension.

Leon had 14 catches for 76 yards and a touchdown as a senior at Memphis last year.

UB Volleyball Has Five Match Win Streak Snapped

  • Posted on September 8, 2010 at 10:01 am

Dani ReinhartThe University at Buffalo volleyball team had its five-match winning streak snapped on Tuesday night as UB fell at Syracuse, 3-0, at the Women’s Building.  The loss drops UB’s record to 6-2 on the season.

Down 24-16 in the first set the Bulls were able to tie it up on the serving of freshman Dani Reinert.  Reinert had three aces during the run to pull the Bulls even at 24.  However, Syracuse would regain the edge with two straight points to take the opening set, 26-24. The second set was close as well with the Bulls hanging in, however the Orange were again able to hold on for the win in the set, taking it 25-21.

Turner Hits For Cycle in Finale For Bisons

  • Posted on September 7, 2010 at 12:01 am

TurnerIn a game without meaning in the International League standings, Justin Turner ensured that the 10,007 fans on hand in Rochester to see Monday’s season finale against Buffalo would remember his name.

With a triple to lead off the eighth inning, Turner completed the cycle, becoming the first Triple-A Bisons player to do so since April 26, 2004 in a 16-1 shellacking of the Red Wings.

Turner singled in the ninth for his sixth hit of the game, a one-game total unmatched by a franchise player since Howard “Butch” Myers went 6-for-7 on June 29, 1936. The two previous games also were in Rochester.

Spiller Listed By Bills At Top Of Depth Chart

  • Posted on September 6, 2010 at 9:40 pm

CJ Spiller BillsIt’s only on paper and  certainly not official, but if you’re a Buffalo Bills fan hoping rookie C.J. Spiller will see plenty of action in his first regular season NFL game, it looks promising.

Bills.com has listed the “unofficial” team depth chart.  Sitting first on the list of running backs is Spiller.  Both Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch are listed as second teamers.

The team’s website also lists Spiller as the first kick returner and backup punt returner to Roscoe Parrish.

At the end of the day, especially just a Monday, the listed depth chart doesn’t mean a lot.  Having versatile veterans like Lynch and assuming his hand is good enough to go, Jackson waiting on the sideline may shorten Spiller’s leash some.  But we all knew coming into this season that Buddy Nix didn’t use the ninth overall pick of the draft on Spiller to be a gadget type of player.

Released Bills RB Anderson Signs With Browns

  • Posted on September 6, 2010 at 12:36 am

Browns logoI spoke to recently released Buffalo Bills running back Andre Anderson Sunday night, and he told me that he is going to join the Cleveland Browns practice squad.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to learn and grow and at this point that’s all you can ask for—is an opportunity.” Anderson said.

Anderson, 22, was signed by the Bills last month after being an undrafted free agent out of Tulane.  As a senior last year Anderson ran for 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns.  He also excelled off the field; being named an Academic All-American.

Levi Brown Says He Won’t Be Joining Practice Squad

  • Posted on September 6, 2010 at 12:26 am

Levi BrownConsidering most people expected either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Brian Brohm to be the odd man out among Bills quarterbacks, it was at least semi-surprising to see Levi Brown get released by the team on Saturday as they got down to the 53-man roster limit. After initially being taken back by the move it appeared a certainty he’d spend a season on the team’s practice squad, assuming he wasn’t claimed by another team.

Well, some 24 hours Brown wasn’t picked up by another team.  In what many will consider a shocking development, it doesn’t appear he’ll be back in Buffalo anytime soon unless it’s for a visit.

Brown tweeted Sunday night that he will not be joining the Bills practice squad.  Not only does he appear surprised; he’s also angry.

Wrapping Up Week One of H.S. Football

highschoolsports2A wrap up for this past weekend’s high school football openers:

Upset Of The Year (Already): North Tonawanda went undefeated and won their first-ever NYS championship last year in Class-AA.  The road to a repeat, at least another undefeated one, has been put to rest on the opening night of the season.  Kenmore West traveled into Lumberjacks Stadium and dealt N.T. a shocking 30-22 defeat on the hands of three huge plays by running back Martin Bailey.  He scored on runs of 46 and 53 yards and also caught a 53-yard touchdown pass.
