for October 2010
Buffalo may have sported their throwback uniforms when they stepped on the field to face the New York Jets Sunday afternoon. But from the opening kickoff, the Bills demonstrated that they’re clearly the same old team.
The Bills were outplayed, outhustled, outhit, outcoached, out-anything else you want to say as they were embarrassed by the Jets, 38-14 in front of their own home crowd.
Depending on your age, you will recall the Bills teams of 1984-85 that went 2-14 in consecutive seasons. At this point of the 2010 campaign, let’s just say those teams look pretty damn good by comparison.

In less than three days after being cut by the Buffalo Sabres, Tim Conboy was finally on the ice for the first time as a Portland Pirate as they held their first official practice at Portland Ice Arena.
Of course, who knew the way to Portland from Buffalo, NY included a stop in Minnesota.
Conboy, who hails from Farmington, MN, flew from Buffalo to retrieve his belongings along with his car before making the nearly 1500 mile trek across two time zones to Portland.

When it comes to New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, there doesn’t seem to be any middle ground for how you feel about him. Simply put, you either love him… or you hate him.
I’m thinking the majority of Buffalo Bills fans are feeling the latter.
On Monday the Bills released former starting quarterback Trent Edwards. Two teams put a claim on him; Jacksonville and New York. Based on last year’s record Edwards was awarded to Jacksonville. But while a team featuring struggling quarterback David Garrard was expected to make a move for Edwards, the Jets were not. They have a young star quarterback in Mark Sanchez as well as veteran backups Mark Brunell and Kellen Clemens.

Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News reports that the Buffalo Bills better be ready for the New York Jets smash mouth style of football.
Meanwhile, Allen Wilson of the News writes that the New York Jets plan on putting Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in a pressure cooker.
Leo Roth of the Rochester D&C says that the Jets are a reminder of what the Bills could be.

It’s my favorite time of the week— my week four edition of “Know Your Enemy”. This week, I asked five random questions to Daniel Krieg of the New York Jets-based website, “Rex Sanchez“.
Of course, you can check out his site to see my responses to some of the questions he asked me regarding the Bills. Be warned; it’s not pretty.
Without further ado.
1) Mark Sanchez has six touchdown passes in his first three games on the season, what has been the biggest difference between his rookie season and this year?

John Vogl of the Buffalo News is reporting that the Buffalo Sabres will face the Philadelphia Flyers in Sunday’s preseason finale without the services of two of their players. Both goaltender Patrick Lalime and forward Thomas Vanek have injuries that are forcing them out of the lineup.
Of the two, Vanek is obviously the far more important injury. He suffered a hit in Thursday’s game at Montreal that left him with a sore head and neck. Head coach Lindy Ruff did point out however, that the injury doesn’t fall into the seven-day window for concussions.
“Van has to be held out,” Ruff told Vogl. “He’s going to probably see our doctor again tomorrow night.
Lalime has a pulled groin and hasn’t been able to practice for the past four days. Ruff is hopeful, but not overly confident that Lalime will be ready for the season opener Friday night in Ottawa, saying he’s concerned about Lalime’s lack of playing time.
Williamsville South senior quarterback Joe Licata has had a magical career. It culminated Friday night when he became Western New York’s all-time leader in touchdown passes. Licata threw for four scores, including a seven yarder to Kevin O’Connell that allowed him to surpass the career record of 71 by Randall Secky of Maple Grove, as the Billies held off Iroquois 33-31 in Class-A action.
Licata finished the night 15-of-20 for 197 yards. He told Buffalo News reporters that he didn’t know he was on pace to break the record until this past week.
The other big story this weekend was junior quarterback Chad Kelly (nephew of Jim Kelly), who led St. Joes to a stunning victory Saturday afternoon, throttling second-ranked large school Canisius, 50-26 in front of a delighted home crowd.

Steve Hevalow and Tim Hagerty each surpassed the century mark on the ground as visiting Rowan (3-1/2-1) pounded out a 24-7 victory over Buffalo State (0-4/0-3) in an NJAC contest Saturday at Coyer Field.
Hevalow carried the load for the Profs with 30 rushes for 143 yards and two scores. Quarterback Hagerty ran 16 times for 127 yards, and was also 12 of 19 passing for 175 yards. Dean Hammel led the defense with nine tackles, including a sack. Matt Hoffman added seven tackles, including 3.5 for loss and two sacks.

The Canisius College volleyball team dropped its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season, falling in four sets at Saint Peter’s in the Yanitelli Center on Saturday. The Golden Griffins lost 25-18, 25-21, 17-25 and 25-17 to fall to 8-9 overall and 4-1 in the MAAC.
Sophomore Samantha Good led the Griffs with 19 kills while hitting .371 on the day. Senior Renee Lettow had 13 kills while junior Janelle Davis added a double-double with 40 assists and a season-high 14 digs. Sophomore Allyson Severyn had a season-high 27 digs.
“Saint Peter’s controlled the momentum right from the start today, and they kept us from gaining any of the momentum back,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We committed more unforced errors than our last two matches combined. We didn’t get the leadership necessary to turn it around when you’re struggling on the road.”

I spoke to a source inside the Buffalo Bills organization, and learned that offensive tackle Jamon Meredith will be deactivated for the second straight week when the Bills take on the New York Jets Sunday afternoon.
According to the source, Cordaro Howard will backup starters Demetrius Bell and Cornell Green at offensive tackle. Kraig Urbik will be the seventh active linemen and back up both guard positions.
Meredith came into training camp expected to challenge Bell for the starting left tackle spot but has struggled since training camp. He played sparingly during the Bills first two games but the coaching staff didn’t like what they saw and have since moved Howard past him on the team’s depth chart.

As you’ve surely noticed, Buffalo Sports Daily has been down for the past few days. I’ve been extremely busy this week attending the murder trial where the victim was a closer personal friend, and the website needed some maintenance and new coding, so this was the perfect time to do it.
Regardless, we’re back and ready to roll—and apologize to our readers for any inconvenience. We’ll try to make it up to you.
