Gladstone to Discuss Controversial Book in Buffalo

  • Posted on December 30, 2010 at 1:12 pm

Bitter Cup of CoffeeDouglas J. Gladstone, the author of A Bitter Cup of Coffee; How MLB & The Players Association Threw 874 Retirees A Curve, will read excerpts from his book at The Dog Ears Bookstore on Friday, January 14, 2011, beginning at 6 P.M.. Mr. Gladstone will also take questions from the audience and sign copies of the book for all those individuals who purchase it that evening.

With a foreword written by the Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist, Dave Marash, A Bitter Cup of Coffee tells the true story of a group of former big-league ballplayers denied pensions as a result of the failure of both the league and the union to retroactively amend the vesting requirement change that granted instant pension eligibility to ballplayers in 1980. Prior to that year, ballplayers had to have four years service credit to earn an annuity and medical benefits. Since 1980, however, all you have needed is one day of service credit to qualify for health insurance and 43 days of service credit for a pension.

Here’s, in part, what the Midwest Book Review had to say about the book in its official review, which was published in May:

Licata Continues Historic High School Career With Another Record

  • Posted on December 30, 2010 at 12:28 am

Joe Licata Williamsville (Rivals.com)When it’s all said and done, Williamsville South’s Joe Licata will go down as having one of… if not the greatest high school sports careers in Western New York history.

Already the most prolific passing quarterback in WNY history as well as the 2010 Connolly Cup winner (given to the area’s best football player), Licata smashed another record Wednesday night, this time on the basketball court.

Licata sunk seven three-pointers as South defeated Williamsville North, 61-46 to win the Jolly Boys Tournament.  In the process, Licata set the all-time WNY career mark for three-pointers with 288.  City basketball legend Ritchie Campbell (Burgard) previously held the record of 285 in 1990.

Stevie Johnson Worried About Improving, Not Contract

  • Posted on December 30, 2010 at 12:02 am

Steve Johnson End ZoneSometimes there’s a price to pay for individuals in the NFL when your team isn’t successful.  Such is the case with charismatic Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson.  Toiling in obscurity after being planted near the bottom of the depth his first two years in the league, Johnson went ballistic in 2010 with a memorable season on the field… and similarly unforgettable off it.

On the field Johnson is on the verge of making Bills history.  He has 10 touchdown catches with Sunday’s game remaining against the New York Jets.  If he can take one more pass to the end zone from Ryan Fitzpatrick (or Brian Brohm if Fitzpatrick can’t go), he’ll tie the team-record of 11 TD receptions set by Bill Brooks in 1995.

As it stands he’s one of just four Bills receivers ever to accumulate 10 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards receiving in the same season (Eric Moulds, Andre Reed, Elbert Dubenion.)
