It’s safe to assume the Buffalo Sabres are glad to be leaving the state of Florida.
For the second straight night the Sabres generated next to nothing offensively, fully deserving of leaving the ice in Tampa Bay on the losing end of a 3-1 score against the Lightning, giving the Sabres consecutive losses to Florida teams.
Buffalo lost to Florida Friday night, 6-2.

The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team downed Houghton, 79-47, at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. Zach Filzen led all scorers with 21 points, including five three-pointers. All 11 UB players that played in the game scored and grabbed a rebound to help the Bulls improve to 5-0 at home this season.
Buffalo (7-3) shot nearly 61 percent from the field in the first half, but couldn’t shake a feisty Houghton squad until late in the stanza. The Bulls closed the half on a 19-4 scoring run to take a 43-22 halftime lead.

Andrew Nicholson scored 44 points and Ohio’s D.J. Cooper 43 as the two stars carried their teams through four overtimes – the longest game in St. Bonaventure history – in a 112-107 marathon Bonnies win over Ohio Saturday afternoon at the Reilly Center.
A game that was knotted 17 times featured the most Bonaventure points scored since a program-record 134 were scored in a 25-point victory over Concordia Nov. 24, 1990 – nearly two decades ago. The 112 points is the 15th-highest total in Bonaventure’s 90-year program history.

The Buffalo Stampede will attempt to win their third consecutive game to start their ACPL season when they face the Hudson Valley Kingz Saturday night at Daemen College, 4830 Main Street.

The big news to hit One Bills Drive Thursday had nothing to do with a football field. In a rare move, at least for someone in the Buffalo Bills organization, safety Donte Whitner took to the media to express dissatisfaction with the way his contract extension negotiations are going with the team.
Whitner appeared all-but-certain he’ll be testing free agency when this season concludes.
“Things aren’t going the way I want them to go or getting it done,” Whitner said. ”It might come to me actually hitting the free agent market because we’re far off. We’re far off in dollars. We’re far off in everything. So, that’s what it’s going to be.”

The Buffalo Sabres return to action tonight when they take to the ice in Florida to take on the Panthers. Buffalo has been hot of late, winning four of their last six games and got a huge boost from Drew Stafford Wednesday night, who returned to the lineup to score a Hat Trick in Buffalo’s 3-2 victory over arch rival Boston.
Stafford had missed 15 of the previous 16 games with a shoulder injury.
“It was nice seeing him back in the lineup, working hard and getting open for some scoring chances,” Sabres center Derek Roy said of Stafford. “We definitely needed that goal-scoring boost.”

The Buffalo Bills returned to the practice field Wednesday as they began physical preparations to take on the Dolphins in Miami on Sunday. Miami is hanging on to their playoff lives at 7-6 and several Bills players said that’s not lost on their minds.
“That’s our goal,” defensive end Chris Kelsay said. ”We’ve got three big games to finish out the season. We’re not going to play spoiler to the Patriots they’re going to playoffs, but we can the next couple of weeks, Miami and potentially the last game of the season against New York.”
Five players didn’t participate at practice Wednesday; offensive linemen Geoff Hangartner, Demetrius Bell and Andy Levitre as well as Kelsay and Drayton Florence. Of course, Lee Evans is out for the season after being placed on Injured Reserve earlier this week with an ankle injury.

One of our photographers, Michael Thomas, captured this Aaron Maybin image during Buffalo’s season opener against Miami. It should’ve been a sign of things to come. Seeing the Bills are playing the Dolphins again this Sunday, we thought it would be a good time to pull this from our vault.
The problem is— we don’t even know what to say. Therefore, we’re putting the onus on you.

Former Buffalo Bills receiver and future Hall of Famer Andre Reed remains a busy man these days. When he’s not on the golf course, he’s tirelessly working with the multiple charities he’s become hands-on involved with through the years.
One of those charities is called “The Second Mile”, a nonprofit organization that serves youths in Pennsylvania. According to their mission statement, the foundation is “committed to helping young people achieve their potential as individuals and as community members and providing education and support for their parents and youth service professionals.”
Reed is also set to launch a brand new product; an all-purpose sauce that’s called “Over the Middle.”

Drew Stafford, Tim Connolly, and Rob Niedermayer returned to the Buffalo Sabres line-up to take on the Boston Bruins Wednesday night at HSBC. Stafford didn’t just return; he was the star of the show, scoring all three Buffalo goals as the Sabres concluded their three-game home stand with a 3-2 victory.
“He’s a skilled player,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said of Stafford. ”We were hoping to get offense from him. It give us that extra dimension because he’s strong and he’s got a great shot. Coming out of camp I thought he was our best player.”

With only three weeks remaining in the Buffalo Bills season, coupled with the team being off Tuesdays and therefore, no real opportunities to get player or staff interviews for other stories, we’re going to roll with a “Bills by the numbers” feature for your tired eyes to wake up with on Wednesday morning.
Sit back and relax…. enjoy your morning cup of coffee and investigate our somewhat widespread list as we exemplify how the Bills are doing both team-wise and individually…. solely by the numbers.

Sunday’s ankle injury suffered by Lee Evans marks the end of his 2010 campaign. The Buffalo Bills placed the wide receiver on Injured Reserve late Tuesday afternoon.
To take his place on the roster, Buffalo signed offensive tackle Erik Pears to the 53-man roster.
Evans struggled in the Bills offense this year, catching just 37 passes for 508 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games. The numbers for catches and receiving yards both represented career-lows for the seven-year veteran from Wisconsin.

As Mike Harrington points out in his Buffalo News report this afternoon, it looks like Drew Stafford, Tim Connolly and Rob Niedermayer will all be back in the Buffalo Sabres lineup tomorrow night when they face the Boston Bruins at the HSBC Arena to wrap up a three-game home stand.
As a result, center Luke Adam has been returned to Portland.
The line combinations Lindy Ruff trotted out at practice today could be best described as odd. Niedermayer, who’s yet to score a goal this season, was skating with the team’s two leading scorers Derek Roy and Thomas Vanek. Stafford worked on a line that included Jason Pominville and Jochen Hecht. Cody McCormick and Mike Grier were between Paul Gaustad and Connolly centered for Patrick Kaleta and Tyler Ennis.

Western New York’s newest Semi-Professional football team, the South Buffalo Celtics, recently announced the signing of former University of West Virginia Mountaineer Rayshawn Bolden. With the recent addition of Bolden, the already open competition at wide receiver becomes that much more intense. Along with their plethora of talented running backs, receiver arguably becomes the strongest position on the team.
Despite already having plenty of proven talent, team co-owner Ron Anderson says the Celtics “are still excited to see who will come and surprise us come training camp time and push their way up the depth chart.”

It’s never a good thing for your most proven receiver to go down with an injury, but for Buffalo Bills wide-out Naaman Roosevelt, it’s an opportunity.
Lee Evans limped off the field with an ankle injury late in the second quarter of the Bills 13-6 victory over the Cleveland Browns Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. While blocking downfield on a Jonathan Stupar 35-yard catch and run, Evans turned his ankle and went down. He didn’t return, won’t be available for at least two games and it’s highly likely he’ll be placed on Injured Reserve when it’s all said and done since there’s only three games remaining this season.
While the last thing Roosevelt wanted is to get forced into the lineup because of injuries, it’s exactly where he’s at right now. With Evans on the shelf and Roscoe Parrish long-gone with a broken wrist, Roosevelt out of the blue becomes the team’s fourth receiver.

When the St. Bonaventure Bonnies defeated St. John’s last Tuesday night, head coach Mark Schmidt seemed to have landed a signature victory in his fourth year of a strenuous rebuilding process.
The Bonnies were 5-2, had an RPI of 29 and were even seeded No. 11 in CBS’s Bracketology by Jerry Palm later in the week.
Surely, the Bonnies weren’t quite that good, but it was a strong start for a program that hasn’t had a record better than .500 since the 2001-02 season. Heck, they’ve only won 10 or more games twice since then, both coming under Schmidt in each of the last two seasons.
So, with this past Saturday’s contest looming against Big 4 rival Niagara, a team the Bonnies hadn’t beat since 01-02, St. Bonaventure had a chance to keep things rolling at the friendly confines of the Reilly Center. Never mind it was against a Niagara team having its worst start in the 12-year career of Joe Mihalich.

We apologize for not reporting this earlier, but it’s worth nothing that the Buffalo Stampede defeated the Garden State Rebels 103-100 Saturday night in an ACPBL game at Daemen College to improve to 2-0 on their young season.
The Stampede seem to be heading towards quite the turnaround from a year ago, when Vincent Lesh’s team went just 3-17.
Chuck Walker led the Stampede with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists. The Garden State Rebels were led by Justin Carter with a game high 25 points.

Women’s hockey player Marissa McMullan was named the Buffalo State Athlete of the Week after helping the Bengals extend their winning-streak to four games with a pair of victories over Plymouth State.
The senior health and wellness major tallied a five-point weekend that included a goal in Friday’s 5-1 win, and two goals and two assists in a 7-1 trouncing on Saturday. McMullan’s 40 career points put her into a tie for fifth on Buffalo State’s all-time scoring list.
Buffalo State (6-6) will take an extended break for the holidays before returning to action in Vermont at the Castleton Tournament on Jan. 7 and 8.
