The Niagara men’s hockey team (9-6-2, 7-4-0 AHA) fell into an early hole that it was unable to climb out of, falling to the UConn Huskies (4-7-3, 4-4-1 AHA) at Dwyer Arena on Saturday evening.
Connecticut struck just nine seconds into the game when Cole Schneider stuffed a rebound past Niagara goalie Chris Noonan. After the Purple Eagles had a goal waved off on the man-advantage, the Huskies took a 2-0 lead when Billy Latta beat Noonan high.
If you’ve followed the Buffalo Bills long enough, instantaneously you comprehend three things painstakingly automatic; death, taxes… and the Bills are going to get abysmal offensive production from the tight end position.
While tight ends have been shuffled in and out of Buffalo like a fresh deck of cards, one hand you can count on being dealt annually is fruitless numbers at tight end. This year is no omission, as Jonathan Stupar tops all Bills tight ends through 11 games… with all of seven receptions.
Here is a list of every Bills tight end that’s caught a pass over the past decade. It’s safe to assume no one from this group will be making induction speeches in Canton for the foreseeable future: Jonathan Stupar, Shawn Nelson, David Martin, Derek Schouman, Derek Fine, Robert Royal, Michael Gaines, Kevin Everett, Ryan Neufeld, Tim Euhus, Mark Campbell, Dave Moore, Jay Riemersma and the unstoppable force that was Sheldon Jackson. (Sorry, we refuse to include Jason Peters)
The first game for the Buffalo Stampede of the ACPBL is on Saturday, December 4th at 7:30 P.M. at Daemen College vs. the Hudson Valley Kingz. General admission tickets for the game are only $5.00 and reserved seating is just $10.00
The Stampede will be led by Point Guard Vinnie Darpino (Kean University) and Mike Dodd (Hunter College), local players Ajay Rutledge and D. J. Johnson, and returning veteran players Chuck Walker and Marcus Hall.
The Hudson Valley Kingz are led by the explosive Prince Jackson, a 6-6 swingman, and Louie Mcroskey from Syracuse University.
If you’re old enough to have been a Buffalo Bills fan for 30-plus years, surely you’ll remember this catchy little holiday jingle that was prominent on the Western New York airwaves.
For the 1980 season, when the Bills were in the midst of going 11-5 to win the AFC East and end a five-year playoff drought, Super Bowl fever was a fever pitch in Buffalo.
Unfortunately the Bills would go to lose at San Diego, 20-14 in the AFC Divisional round on late 50-yard touchdown pass from Dan Fouts to Ron Smith.
Still, it was the good old days of Joe Ferguson, Jeff Nixon, the head coaching prowess of Chuck Knox and the Pro Bowl rookie running back, Joe Cribbs.
Last night on ESPN Sportscenter, they counted down their “Top Ten Plays” for the month of November. Coming in at five was Thomas Vanek for his spectacular goal that gave the Buffalo Sabres an overtime victory over the Washington Capitals on November 13.
Vanek’s goal was the only NHL highlight featured among the top ten.
The top play of the month was the Jacksonville “Hail Mary” pass against Houston that Mike Thomas caught to score the game-winning touchdown as time expired.
The Dallas Morning news reports that the Buffalo Bills have claimed tight end Scott Chandler off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys today.
Chandler was placed on waivers Wednesday by the Cowboys after they were forced to sign tight end Martin Rucker to their 53-man roster from the practice squad after the Bills tried to sign him earlier this week.
Chandler has played in nine games for Dallas this season and is regarded as an excellent blocking tight end. He didn’t have a reception this season.
If you’re one of those people who take pride in getting all your Christmas shopping done early, I hope this wasn’t among your gift items for that special loved one.
If so, go ahead and officially label it as your worst Christmas gift—even worse than grandma’s knitted sweater. I bet that didn’t cost her $104.00, Then again, you would’ve gotten a free hat.
In a move that was expected once the Buffalo Bills signed tight end Mike Caussin late last night, the team placed defensive end Dwan Edwards on Injured Reserve early Thursday afternoon.
Edwards severely hurt his hamstring early in Buffalo’s 19-16 overtime loss to Pittsburgh this past Sunday. He was quietly having a fantastic first season with the club, registering 57 tackles along with a sack and forced fumble.
With Edwards gone for the rest of the season, Spencer Johnson, returning from his own hamstring injury that forced him out of the past two games, will take his spot in the starting lineup. Rookie Alex Carrington should see significant playing time in his place as well.
Edwards signed a four-year deal with Buffalo worth about $18-million on March 17.
If you journey back to early September and revisit a lot of so-called expert predictions from publications around the country, you’d hardly be flabbergasted to find the Buffalo Bills sitting on a 2-9 record with nearly three quarters of the 2010 season in the books. However, you’d be hard pressed to find a single person not astounded to see their opponent this week, the Minnesota Vikings, not doing much better with a 4-7 mark that climaxed with head coach Brad Childress getting jettisoned last week.
It’s quite the turnaround for Minnesota, who came within an overtime play last season from going to the Super Bowl. After spending the entire summer (yet again) luring Brett Favre away from a potential thousandth retirement, the veteran Vikings were primed to make another championship run.
I was set to take the rest of my Wednesday evening off from sports, but a report by John Murphy on the WIVB-TV newscast caught my eye. Murphy was discussing the potential Buffalo Sabres sale by Terry Pegula from Tom Golisano when the subject of Larry Quinn came up… and Quinn provided a quote to the station worth mentioning.
When asked by a television reporter what his future with the organization holds, Quinn was surprisingly (at least to me) quite candid with his response.
“I’ll get out when Tom gets out,” Quinn said. “Whenever that happens.”
While Quinn remains coy about the possibility of the Sabres being sold to Peluga, there’s enough smoke from reports featuring credible reporters, citing credible sources, that’s there’s more than just a little fire to it all.
When we last left the Sabres, things were starting to look up. They had broken their impressive losing streak by beating the Leafs in a shootout, and a couple of exiting wins against the Capitals and Canucks had reinvigorated the team after a putrid month of hockey.
Buffalo had hoped to carry that momentum against the Los Angeles Kings, a team that had defeated Buffalo in a shootout in their only meeting last season. Luckily for the crowd at HSBC Arena, it did. The Sabres overcame a pair of one-goal deficits to beat one of the Western Conference’s best, 4-2.
After scoring two goals and anchoring the Buffalo defense for the entire season, sophomore Shannon Algoe was honored with a spot on the Mid American Conference’s All Academic Team this afternoon. The award, awarded through a voting process conducted by faculty athletic representatives from the conference schools, recognizes excellence in the classroom and performance on the field.
Algoe, a business management major from Lockport, NY, transferred to Buffalo from the University of Connecticut. Her presence was felt immediately on the squad and she ultimately started every game, one of only two players to do so this season. Playing mainly as the team’s last line of defense, Algoe managed to pitch in two goals for the season, second-best on the team.
According to multiple reports, the Buffalo Bills tried to sign tight end Martin Rucker off the Dallas Cowboys practice squad this week. To combat Buffalo’s move the Cowboys promoted Rucker to the 53-man active roster. When that failed, they signed Jacksonville’s Mike Caussin off their practice squad, according to his agent Robert Rouche. A source confirmed the news.
The Bills have been in desperation mode to find some production from the tight end position. Jonathan Stupar leads the team in receptions among tight ends, but has just seven catches on the season. Shawn Nelson has been battling severe migraines since returning from a four-game league suspension to start the season and has just three receptions.
Byron Mulkey hit a pull-up jump shot in the lane with 12.3 seconds left to break a 54-all tie and lift the University at Buffalo men’s basketball team to a 56-54 win at Army on Wednesday night. The Bulls needed to rely on a gutty defensive effort to come out victorious.
Buffalo (4-2) held Army to 23.6 percent shooting (13-of-55) for the game. Mitchell Watt led the defensive effort with five of the team’s 10 blocked shots. The junior forward added 12 points and eight rebounds. Javon McCrea had three blocks and a steal.
Buffalo jumped out to an 11-1 lead to start the game and held the Black Knights to only two points over the first 5:23 of the game. Army (4-3) didn’t score its first field goal until the 14:16 mark of the first stanza. However, cool shooting and turnovers cost the Bulls a chance to pull away. Buffalo had 18 first-half turnovers allowed the Black Knights to take a 24-17 lead with a minute to go in the first half. However, a Zach Filzen three and a Mulkey layup in the closing seconds allowed the Bulls to cut the Army advantage to 24-22 at the break.
University at Buffalo safety Davonte Shannon joined elite company on Wednesday as he became just the fourth player in the history of the Mid-American Conference to be a four-time selection to the All-MAC First Team. Joining Shannon on the first team were fellow safety Domonic Cook and punt returner Terrell Jackson.
Shannon had another solid campaign for the Bulls. He led the team in tackles with 120 and added four interceptions, two pass breakouts and a fumble recovery. He finished his record-breaking career with a school record 461 total tackles as well as first all-time in solo tackles with 258.
John Wawrow of the Associated Press reports this afternoon that Buffalo Sabres owner Tom Golisano is seriously considering selling the Buffalo Sabres to billionaire Terry Peluga, but has not yet decided for sure if he is going to sell the team.
The report, citing a source close to discussions says “(Pegula’s) a candidate, but I don’t know how serious Tom is. He’s giving it serious consideration but hasn’t made up his mind.”
Meanwhile, Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News posted a story this morning, reporting that Peluga traveled to New York City on Tuesday night, presumably to sign a letter of intent to purchase the franchise and possibly meet with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.
Things haven’t went quite the way for the Buffalo Bills in 2010 as most anticipated. Don’t get me wrong… the 2-9 record is barely shocking. The reasons, however, the Bills are going to miss the playoffs for the 11th straight season are not what you would label as predictable for this organization months ago.
If you were playing Family Feud this past April and 100 people were asked “What position will be the Bills greatest offseason priority?” quarterback and left tackle would’ve battled intensely for the number one answer.
That’s no longer the case. In fact, quarterback and left tackle have actually grown into Buffalo strengths. Who would’ve thought that?
Head volleyball coach Todd Kress has announced the addition of three players who have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Bulls for the 2011 season. Included in the class are two players from Indiana and one from the State of New York.
“We are thrilled with all three players and the qualities they bring here to Buffalo,” said Kress. “We have now been able to put together back-to-back recruiting classes of kids that are going to help in the development of this program. Each of these young women are not only great volleyball players, but they are great people and that is very important to us.”
Sophomore guard Kayla Stroman made a 3-pointer with seven seconds left in the game to give Niagara a 52-51 victory over the Penn Quakers on Wednesday at the Palestra for its first win of the season.
Niagara (1-5) prevailed in a close encounter in its first-ever meeting with Penn (2-3) in a game that featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes. Senior forward Liz Flooks led the game with a season-high 25 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
“We really dug deep on the defensive end,” head coach Kendra Faustin said. “Ali made two big free throws and obviously Kayla made a big 3-pointer.”

Canisius College women’s basketball freshman Jamie Ruttle was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. It’s the second consecutive week that a Canisius freshman won the award as Jen Lennox received the honor last week.
Ruttle posted career highs with 11 points and eight rebounds in the Griffs’ 58-52 win over Towson on Saturday. The 6-foot-4 forward went 4-for-6 from the floor and also was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds to preserve the win.
Niagara County Community College Athletic Director Bob McKeown has announced that Erin Whitehead has been named the school’s new Head Softball Coach.
