Not a Good Xmas for Sabres; Roy Done For Season

  • Posted on December 24, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Derek RoyWell, there goes the Sabres season.

Buffalo’s leading scorer, Derek Roy will miss the remainder of the season, the team announced today.  Roy has a torn quad muscle that will require surgery and will be out four to six months.

Roy was the team’s leading scorer and best player (by far) this season.  In 35 games Roy had 35 points, including 10 goals.

Buffalo was already near-buried in the Eastern Conference, laboring in 12th place.  With Roy gone, it’s almost lock they’ll be staying there, if not falling further.

  • Posted on December 23, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Buffalo Bills HelmetBy now you already know.  Williamsville restaurateur Russell Salvatore generously bought up the remaining Buffalo Bills tickets so the blackout would be lifted and fans could watch the Bills face the New England Patriots at Ralph Wilson Stadium Sunday— the day after Christmas.

Salvatore bought more than 7,000 tickets and plans on distributing them to various military and local youth groups, as stated in a Bills media release.

“This is a Christmas present to the community, and I wish everyone in Buffalo a happy holidays,” said Salvatore.

Mr. Salvatore, on behalf of Bills fans throughout the region.. You Da Man.

Bills Look to Finally Knock Off Pats

  • Posted on December 23, 2010 at 11:01 am

birthday_spankingThe last time the Buffalo Bills defeated the New England Patriots, Sam Adams was rumbling down the right sideline following a Tom Brady interception 37 yards for a touchdown; an image that graced the cover of Sports Illustrated the following week. Takeo Spikes picked Brady off twice and Nate Clements added a team fourth that day.  Offensively,  Travis Henry shredded the Patriots defense on the ground for 89 yards and two touchdowns as they pummeled New England on opening day, 31-0.

That was 14 meetings ago.  Bills linebacker Chris Kelsay remembers September 7, 2003 fondly.

WNY Native Clendening Left Off Team USA Roster

  • Posted on December 22, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Adam ClendeningThe following is the press release sent to the media regarding the Team USA 22-man roster that will compete in the World Junior Championships in Buffalo beginning December 26.  Unfortunately, Adam Clendening was not on that list.

The Niagara Falls native did not survive the final cuts.  Clendening helped the United States win gold in both the 2009 and ‘10 World Under-18 Championships.  Apparently it wasn’t enough to make the roster of the defending World Junior champions.

Here is the official announcement.

  • Posted on December 22, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Jimmy HamelFollowing a six-win effort at the Reno Tournament of Champions Sunday, senior Jimmy Hamel was named the conference’s wrestler of the week for December 6-12, the Mid-American Conference announced from its offices in Cleveland this morning. This is Hamel’s third weekly honor in his time with the team.

Hamel had an impressive day at Reno, finishing third overall after losing only one match and winning six others. The Natick, MA native opened the day with a wins over Ty Vinson of Oregon State and Spence Patrick of Stanford by decision before his first loss. He battled through the wrestle-backs, starting with a win over the third-seed in the tournament, Austin Trotman of Appalachian State. He then won a 3-2 decision over Mac Mancuso of West Virginia and a 5-3 decision over Taylor Meeks of North Carolina to set up a rematch with Jason McCroskey of Chattanooga, who had handed him his only loss of the tournament. Hamel took a 5-3 decision to end his day on a high note.

Source: Bills Headed To Fourth Black Out of 2010

  • Posted on December 22, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Buffalo Bills HelmetI spoke to a representative within the Buffalo Bills organization and it appears that the home finale this Sunday against New England will not sell out in time for the NFL “Black Out” rule to be lifted.

Although he couldn’t give an exact amount still available because the team is still selling tickets, he admitted it’s not close to selling out.

“We are unlikely to have it sold out in time to lift the blackout,” he said.  “It’s always a tough time with late December games, but the fans have been very loyal and supportive this entire season.”

Cahill, 6-3, 245, played the past two seasons at Scottsdale Community College and committed to Buffalo during the junior college signing period.  He helped the Fighting Artichokes to a 6-4 record this past season by recording 30 tackles, including nine tackles for loss and four sacks in eight games.

“We had a need for a mid-year transfer on the defensive line,” said Quinn. “Wyatt is a solid addition to our team. He will have a chance to come in and compete right away.”

Fitzpatrick Making Strong Case For 2011

  • Posted on December 22, 2010 at 5:00 am

Ryan FitzpatrickFrom the moment Ryan Fitzpatrick began slinging touchdown passes since entering the starting lineup on September 26 at New England in week three until present date,  the debate has picked up steam.  Should the Buffalo Bills ride the assertive arm of Fitzpatrick in 2011 as the team moves forward, or do the Bills  need to grab the next franchise quarterback with their first draft pick come next spring?

If you’ve been playing close attention to all the factors, Buffalo winning four of their last six games have made two things quite obvious; the organization’s confidence in Fitzpatrick has grown thicker than his beard, and the Bills have probably played themselves out of a marquee signal caller anyway.

Let’s assume for a minute the 2011 NFL draft took place tomorrow.  Right now, the Bills would be selecting sixth. Any shot at Andrew Luck went out the window the second Buffalo knocked off Cleveland for their third win.

Ennis, Rivet Cook Ducks 5-2

  • Posted on December 21, 2010 at 10:18 pm

Sabres Old LogoJust when you thought it was time to leap off the Blue and Gold bandwagon, the Buffalo Sabres, sparked by a pair of Tyler Ennis goals, return of Captain Craig Rivet and solid goaltending from Ryan Miller, cruised to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Anaheim Ducks Tuesday night before a sold out crowd of 18,690 at HSBC Arena.

Drew Stafford, Nathan Gerbe, and Ennis, each provided first period goals as Buffalo peppered Anaheim backup Curtis McElhinney with 17 shots as the skated to the locker room with a convincing 3-0 first period lead over a road weary Ducks squad who managed just four shots on Miller.

Nicholson Named A-10 Co-Player of the Week

  • Posted on December 21, 2010 at 10:06 am

St. Bona LogoAndrew Nicholson and Xavier’s Tu Holloway have been named Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.

Nicholson recorded 44 points on 74 percent shooting from the floor (14-of-19) to lead all scorers and grabbed 12 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double in St. Bonaventure’s 112-107, quadruple overtime win over Ohio last Saturday.  The game was the longest in St. Bonaventure history and Nicholson’s 44 points are the eighth highest single-game total in school annals.  The junior forward played all 60 minutes and netted 15 of his points in the combined extra periods.  Nicholson finished the game tallying career-highs in assists (5) and free throws made (16).  The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native registered a blocked shot in the win and became just the third player at SBU to block at least 150 career shots.

Holloway recorded a triple-double in Saturday’s win against Wake Forest with 14 points, a career-high 10 rebounds and a career-high 14 assists.  The junior guard played 33 minutes against the Demon Deacons connecting on 50 percent of his shots from the floor (5-of-10) and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line.  It marked the first triple-double in the A-10 since Duquesne’s Shawn James performed the feat in 2008, while it marked the first in Xavier school history since David West accomplished the feat in 2001-02 season.  The 14 assists turned in by Holloway are a league-high, while he committed just one turnover.  The weekly honor is the third for Holloway this year.

Chan Gailey Is Winning People Over

  • Posted on December 21, 2010 at 10:00 am

Chan Gailey (photo by Mike Thomas)Raise your hand if you were pleased the day you found out Chan Gailey would become the 16th head coach of the Buffalo Bills.  If you’re hands are high in the air, you’ll have to forgive me for keeping mine pointed firmly towards the ground.

I wasn’t happy, enthused, inspired, encouraged, stimulated or any affirmative adjective you feel like using. I reckoned it was the typical, post-Super Bowl era Ralph Wilson status-quo move.  In fact, I loathed the thought of a guy like Gailey coming to right a sinking Buffalo ship so much, I was the guy some (not fondly) remember as the one behind the billboard urging Bill Cowher to take the head coaching gig that Wilson was allegedly interested in offering.

Several months later, I’m genuinely starting to think I was mistaken.

College Corner: All About Nicholson

  • Posted on December 21, 2010 at 5:15 am

Andrew NicholsonIt had the making of a pretty boring week of local college hoops in western New York. With the fall semester coming to an end at most schools across the country, each of the area Big 4 teams took the week off from having games

Thankfully, it couldn’t have come at a better time for St. Bonaventure.

The Bonnies, fresh off a disappointing loss to Niagara last Saturday, again stole the local headlines with a jaw-dropping, record-breaking quadruple overtime game where the benchless Bonnies outlasted Ohio for a 112-107 victory.

Four of Bona’s starters played in at least 50 of the game’s 60 minutes, while the fifth, Da’Quan Cook fouled out in regulation, leaving a heavy workload for the seldom-used Jake Houseknecht. But that’s it. The rest of the four-person bench logged a whopping 21 minutes combined.

Big Wins for Timon, St. Joes in H.S. Hoops

  • Posted on December 20, 2010 at 10:38 pm

Fulton Bryant TimonDespite a slow start to the season that’s seen them drop two of their first three games, MST Seneca High School traveled to South Buffalo Monday night still clinging to the 10th spot in the Buffalo News basketball rankings among small schools.  After tonight, they’ll have a lot of impressing to do in order to return to the list anytime soon.

Bishop Timon St. Jude, sixth-ranked among large schools, utterly dominated every facet of the game from the opening tip until the final horn — administrating a 100-55 blow out in front of an animated home crowd.

While the Timon supporters may have been excited, Seneca head coach Scott Kirsh was less than enthusiastic after the game.  He refused comment when approached, understandably frustrated by his team’s lackluster performance, and politely as can be expected quipped he had “enough problems to worry about in his own locker room.”

Sabres Need to Amp Offense Up Very Soon

  • Posted on December 20, 2010 at 11:44 am

tim_connollyStarting Tuesday the Buffalo Sabres will play four games over eight nights with three of the four coming against Western Conference foes.  While it’s only late December, a sense of urgency needs to kick in soon for a squad that’s close to playing themselves out of the Eastern Conference playoff race.

By the time the run of games is over Buffalo will have played 37, very close to the midway point of the season.  As of Monday, the Sabres 13-16-4 for just 30 points, good for only 10th in the conference and a full eight points behind Boston in the eighth and final playoff spot.  The Bruins also got two games in hand.

Last season at the 33-game stretch, Buffalo had compiled a record of 21-10-2.

Bills Squish Fish From Playoff Race, 17-14

  • Posted on December 19, 2010 at 6:16 pm

Dolphins LoseWithout question, the most popular football player in Buffalo this evening isn’t Arthur Moats, Stevie Johnson, C.J. Spiller or even Ryan Fitzpatrick.  Instead, Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter could probably board a private jet from Miami to the Buffalo airport, hit Chippewa Street and not pay a dime for a cocktail at any establishment on the entire strip.

After Sunday, Dolphins fans probably prefer Carpenter gets away.

Carpenter attempted four long field goals Sunday… and missed them all.  It was the decided difference as the Buffalo Bills defeated the Dolphins (7-7) in Miami, 17-14 to officially eliminate the Fins from the AFC playoff race.

The Bills improved to 4-10 and since starting the season 0-8, have won four of their past six games.
