WNY Native Jones Shines at UFC 126

  • Posted on February 6, 2011 at 1:39 pm

jon-jonesUFC 126 this Saturday night featured a title fight between two of the top middleweights in the world; Champion Anderson Silva and formidable challenger Vitor Belfort. Going into the bout the middleweight kingpin Silva faced quite a bit of critics as many fans felt of late Silva has toyed with several of his opponents rather than going for the finish.

Well fight fans, this clash wasn’t one of those nights.

It took Silva all of three and a half minutes to separate Belfort from consciousness. After a brief feeling out process, Silva used straight front kick to the jaw from out of nowhere against his unsuspecting opponent. This was a particularly spectacular knockout as the type of kick Silva used is usually reserved for the midsection of the opponent. This could be the first time ever fans of Mixed Martial Arts have seen a maneuver like this land flush on an opponent and end a fight, a title fight no less.

New P.O.Y. Candidate & Other Observations

  • Posted on February 6, 2011 at 6:00 am

High School Hoops LogoIn high school basketball circles I’ve heard plenty of chatter about Jamestown forward Jaysean Paige being the front runner to win Western New York Player of the Year when the season is over.  I do think a Jamestown player will warrant serious consideration, but feel a lot of the media has the wrong player.  Darin Butts has been playing amazing basketball lately and in my mind, he’s the favorite.

Butts had 28 points in consecutive games this week in tough road wins over Frontier and Lancaster.  Besides the scoring, Butts is the definition of a stat-filler.  The senior is a lock to get at least five rebounds, steals and assists almost every time he takes the court.

“He does everything for us we could ever ask of him,” Jamestown coach Ben Drake said this week. “He started the season a little slow for us but over the past few weeks he’s been playing great.  He’s a three-year starter for us and one of the leaders of our team.  How far we go in the playoffs comes down in large part to him.”

Sabres Continue Dominance of Leafs

  • Posted on February 6, 2011 at 1:50 am

Sabres Old LogoWhen it comes to the Buffalo Sabres’ roller coaster season, about the only thing that remains certain is they’ll defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Saturday night was no exception at the HSBC Arena as Buffalo handed Toronto a 6-2 defeat.  Buffalo has won all three meetings between the teams this season and are 29-9-1 against the Leafs since 2005.

The Sabres, who haven’t lost to Toronto on home ice since December of 2008, held a convincing 43-25 advantage in shots on goal.

Drew Stafford scored twice for the Sabres and is now better than a goal for every two games he’s played this season (17 goals in 33 games).   Paul Gaustad, Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek also scored for the Sabres.  Even Tim Connolly scored, his first in 13 games.

Last-Second Shot Puts Bonnies Over Duquesne

  • Posted on February 6, 2011 at 1:31 am

St. Bona LogoThe Bonnies used 3-pointer from Michael Davenport with 1.6 seconds left to overcome a one-point deficit and sink Atlantic 10 leader Duquesne, 64-62, on Saturday night in front of a raucous Reilly Center.

After Duquesne’s B.J. Monteiro hit a layup with 11 seconds left the Bonnies inbounded the ball to sophomore Demitrius Conger, who found Davenport along the right elbow for the game winner. Davenport finished the game with a team-high 16 points while Montiero led all scorers with 17.

Duquesne, who led the A-10 with a perfect 8-0 record coming into the game, falls to 16-6 (8-1) while the Bonnies improve to 12-10 and 4-5 in the conference. The loss halts the Dukes’ 11-game win streak, which ranked as the fourth-longest in the nation.
