Jamestown Rolls Past Frontier

  • Posted on February 1, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Darius Edwards Jaysean PaigeIf you’ve followed high school basketball in Western New York this season, you know Jamestown forward Jaysean Paige is one of those “must see” talents.  To think, however, the Red Raiders are a one-man show is a big mistake.

With Paige off to a sluggish start Tuesday night in Jamestown’s ECIC match up at Frontier, Senior forward Darin Butts took on the starring role.  Butts scored a game-high 28 points, including 12 in the decisive third quarter as the Red Raiders improved to 10-2 with a 76-59 victory over the Falcons.

“He’s (Butts) been playing really good basketball for the past few weeks,” Jamestown head coach Ben Drake said.  “He got off to a slow start this year for whatever reason but recently he’s been playing really well for us.  He’s been starting for us for three years and he’s the kind of guy that fills up the stat sheet.”

BSD January Month-In-Review

  • Posted on February 1, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Cookie GilchristSo the Buffalo Bills stagger to the finish line, Buffalo Sabres fans may finally see light at the end of the tunnel, Buffalo Bisons have a new manager, Buffalo Bandits kick off their season and a certain publisher from this very website and a starting NFL safety may end up fighting each other— for charity.

Buffalo also said hello to a well known coach joining the Bills staff and sadly said goodbye to one of the team’s all-time great running backs.

A former Bills wide receiver gets to the brink of the Hall of Fame again and a potential future Sabres Hall of Famer starts to turn it around in net after a subpar season.

We celebrated the best the world had to offer in junior hockey and mourned the 20th anniversary of arguably the single-worst moment in Bills history.

That’s the kind of month it’s been in the world of Buffalo sports.

College Corner: Mulkey Redshirt Move Pays Off

  • Posted on February 1, 2011 at 11:01 am

College Corner LogoWhen Reggie Witherspoon asked Byron Mulkey to redshirt his senior season just slightly more than a year ago, perhaps the point guard was discouraged from getting a chance to play on a conference championship team. After all, the Bulls had six other seniors returning to the team last year and had advanced all the way to the MAC conference championship game the year prior.

Mulkey, a former starter for Witherspoon who averaged more than 30 minutes per game as a freshman, had fallen out of favor with the UB head coach at the tail end of 2008-09 and was asked to redshirt last year in favor of John Boyer to start at point guard. Since both were seniors, Witherspoon couldn’t afford to head into 2010-11 without a veteran point guard. Plus, there simply weren’t enough minutes for both players.

Things didn’t work out all that bad. Boyer led the nation in assists-to-turnover ratio and the Bulls won 18 games, reaching the MAC quarterfinals.
