It was a celebratory night at Rainbow Rink in North Tonawanda as the Queen City Roller Girl’s marked their 5th year of existence over the weekend. What better place than a roller rink to celebrate a birthday?! The bout between the Alley Kats and undefeated Nickle City Knockouts was better than a chicken-dance on wheels ever could be. QCRG Announcer, Kiki Konkussion, even dressed up as a giant cupcake to commemorate the event. But as soon as the whistle blew, the crowd knew they were in for more than a party; this was roller war.
The first half proved that jammers from both teams were paying close attention to scoring, each side calling off jams before the opposing team could score. The strategy works in theory, but seemed to trip up Knockouts’ jammer B.J. Harmstrong. In Jam 2 she called off the jam before she herself could even score. A scoreless Jam certainly didn’t hurt the lead the Knockouts held starting in Jam 1 and carried throughout the first period.
Although the Knockouts prevailed, there was some great skating from Evil-Lyn Cognito for the Alley Kats, as she racked up eight points in Jam Four. Gaia also had a few significant turns around the track, hoping through the Knockouts defenders in the seventh Jam to score five points, bringing the Kats within four points, 20-16.

Marc-Andre Gragnani picked the perfect time to score the first goal of his NHL career. The defensemen, up because Jordan Leopold has a broken hand, was credited with the game-winning goal in overtime as the Buffalo Sabres came out of the victorious end of a huge 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday at the RBC Arena.
With the victory, Buffalo moved three points ahead of Carolina in the Eastern Conference playoff race and a point ahead of the New York Rangers. The Sabres reside in seventh place with just three games to play in the regular season.
Jhonas Enroth started his third straight game in place of Ryan Miller (upper body injury) and was spectacular; stopping 35 shots including a handful of golden Carolina opportunities. To be frank, the Sabres stole a point as Carolina dominated the majority of the game but couldn’t beat Enroth, who improved to 7-2-2 on the season.

The Buffalo Sabres earned a point in Washington on Saturday night. They came very close to earning a second point. Hopefully, they won’t end up needing it.
Buffalo was leading the Capitals, 4-3 with under minute to play in regulation. Then while on the power play and a pulled goalie to give them a two-man advantage, Jason Arnott scored with 52 seconds left to send the game to overtime for Washington. During extra time, Alex Ovechkin scored his 30th goal of the season to give Washington a 5-4 victory over Buffalo.
Carolina defeated the New York Islanders Saturday, 4-2 to pull within two points of Buffalo. The Sabres are currently in seventh place with 88 points, but just one point ahead of the eighth place New York Rangers and two ahead of Carolina for the eighth spot.
Drew Stafford scored twice to give him 30 goals for the season for Buffalo. Thomas Vanek and Paul Gausted also scored.
Buffalo has perhaps its biggest game of the season to this point when they face Carolina Sunday at 5pm.

( Since we’re growing tired of talking about who the Buffalo Bills may take with the third overall pick, this is the sixth in a 10-part series about who the Bills are most likely to target with their second round draft pick. The Bills hold the second pick of round two, 34th overall)
Colin Kaepernick, Nevada (QB)
It’s hard to find a quarterback who has put up more prolific numbers in college football than Kaepernick. The four-year starter finished with over 10,000 passing yards, 4,000 rushing yards, and 141 combined touchdowns in his career.
Additionally, he became the first college quarterback ever to throw for 2,000 yards while running for 1,000 yards three straight years. Only two other quarterbacks – Tim Tebow and Cam Newton – have ever passed for 20 touchdowns and run for at least the same number in one season.

The Buffalo Bandits are looking to continue their four game winning streak against the Washington Stealth on tonight at the HSBC Arena. The Stealth are coming into this game with an ax to grind after the Stealth lost to the Eastern Conference leading Toronto Rock in overtime last night. The Bandits could have used a Stealth win in Toronto as they now trail the Rock by a full game in the race for first in the Eastern Conference.
The Bandits have a tendency to go on winning streaks during their seasons, as the last time they won four games in a row was March 6, 2010 – March 27, 2010 and the five game winning streak was the start of the 2009 season. The Bandits have the luxury of playing three of their last five games at home where the team is 4-1 this season.

University at Buffalo men’s basketball signee Xavier Ford has been named to the PARADE Magazine All-America Team. The Colorado Springs, CO native is a third team selection.
A 6-8 forward, Ford averaged 27.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game this past season. He led the Harrison Panthers to a 20-5 record.
Ford is the first UB men’s basketball recruit to be named a PARADE All-American. First published in 1957, PARADE lists four teams of 10 players that include recruits who have signed with such schools as Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and Texas. Ford was the only Mid-American Conference recruit selected.
“I was really excited when I heard the news that Xavier was named a PARADE All-American,” head coach Reggie Witherspoon said. “To be recognized alongside the best high school players from across the country is a great accomplishment.”

Former St. Bonaventure baseball alumnus Tom Marra, Class of 1980, was named to The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Board of Directors on Thursday.
Marra earmarked a $900,000 gift in September 2005 to the Anniversary Campaign for the complete renovation of McGraw-Jennings Field.
The gift converted the previously all-natural grass field to an artificial surface, while also expanding the dugouts, replacing the bullpens and providing new fencing around the entire stadium.
When the field was dedicated on Sept. 9, 2006, it was renamed Fred Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field in honor of longtime Bonnies coach Fred Handler. Marra, a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, played under Handler, who was also a physical education professor at the school from 1959 until his retirement in 1997.

An excellent look over at Buffalo Rumblings how Da’Quan Bowers could be a fit with the Buffalo Bills schematically. Going by this report, which is well worth the read, it seems the defense could have its limitations should they draft the talented Clemson defensive end.
In Joe Buscaglia’s WGR blog talking about Nick Fairley, Justin Houston and Christian Ponder visiting the Buffalo Bills today, he notes that Buddy Nix was in North Carolina to see Robert Quinn, among others. Buscaglia thinks Quinn is out of the equation with the third overall pick. I wholeheartedly disagree.
Warren Moon thinks a lot of the criticism Cam Newton is receiving is racially based in this ESPN report. Newton visited with the Bills this past Monday.
A pretty funny… and completely fake Buddy Nix Facebook page.
