The “What If” Game: Stevie Doesn’t Drop The Ball

  • Posted on May 12, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Stevie JohnsonEver since the 2010 NFL started, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson has been having fun on and off the field.  He became one of the few players on the team worth watching on the field and has been equally entertaining in interviews off it and of course, the social networking sites.

Appearing in the NFL Network studio last night,  Johnson had some downright funny things to say to host Rich Eisen.  In regards to his infamous dropped pass against the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime last season that cost the Bills a victory and his subsequent rant about God after, Johnson jokingly quipped Wednesday “Actually, he (God) DM’d me. He just told me I did this for a reason. I did this to get that Crimson Elephant.” referring of course to Marcell Dareus.

The Bills ended up finishing the season 4-12 and landing third in the NFL draft, which they used the pick on Dareus last month.  Of course, had Johnson made that catch and the Bills won the game, that would’ve meant at least one more win in the standings and who knows, maybe the momentum would’ve propelled Buffalo to a couple more victories.

Sabres Increase Season Ticket Prices By 5%

  • Posted on May 12, 2011 at 12:43 pm

Sabres old logoThe Buffalo Sabres today announced that season ticket prices for the 2011-12 season will increase by approximately 5%. Price increases will range from $1-$4 depending on the price level.

New this year is the inclusion of two pre-season games in the 42-game season ticket package. The two pre-season games will be included at discounted prices between $10-25, unlike most teams that charge full regular season prices for preseason games. The Sabres will be playing one less regular season game at home due to their inclusion in the 2011 NHL Premiere Series in Europe.

Buffalo’s average season ticket price of $44.85 is still $16 cheaper than the league average, and ranks 23rd in the National Hockey League. The 5% price increase is necessary for the Sabres to keep pace with league-wide revenues and ensure they are able to continue qualifying for NHL revenue sharing.

Daily-Links-LogoNewly promoted Assistant GM and Director of Player Personnel Doug Whaley was initially attracted to the opportunity in Buffalo over a year ago because it presented the challenge of building an NFL club back into a contender. After a year on the job he now has even more decision making authority, and he couldn’t be more ready to get started, writes Chris Brown of Bills.com.

Tim Graham of ESPN.com explains how the Bills have reorganized the front office with two new hires.

So far Buffalo News readers think Cornelius Bennett should be the next player to go on the Bills Wall of Fame.

Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings thinks the Bills are ahead of the curve when it comes to the multi-back offensive trend.

Bills Add Two To Personnel Department

  • Posted on May 11, 2011 at 5:23 pm

Buffalo Bills Buddy Nix continued the changes in the Buffalo Bills s personnel department Wednesday afternoon, announcing the hiring of Tom Gibbons and Chuck Cook. Gibbons will be the team’s new Pro Personnel Director and Cook will take on the role of  Director of College Scouting.

Gibbons will take on a lot of the Pro Personnel duties that were being hangled by Doug Whaley, who was named the new Player Personnel Director earlier this week after the team got rid of Tom Modrak. Whaley will now focus more exclusively on college scouting.

According to the team’s press release, Gibbons is an upstate New York native (Dunkirk) and his first 12 years in the NFL were spent working inside the Bills personnel department (1992-2003) as a scout for both college and the pros. Gibbons has spent the past seven years as a college scout with the San Diego Chargers and was assigned the task of handling the Northeast region.

buffalo bandits logoThe National Lacrosse League today announced that Buffalo Bandits forward John Tavares has been named NLL Second Team All-Pro for the 2011 season.

Tavares led all Bandits in goals (32), assists (46), points (78) and game-winning goals (3) in 2011. He has now led the Bandits in scoring in 16 of the team’s 20 seasons of existence, never finishing a campaign worse than second among Buffalo runners in total points.

This season, Tavares extended his league-record career scoring totals, becoming the first player in league history to reach 700 goals, 800 assists and 1,500 points and the second to reach 2,000 loose balls. His 1,547 career points are over 400 more than the next highest active player.

simpsons-triviaThe Buffalo Bills have selected 28 players throughout their team history via the NFL draft who have gone on to earn at least one Pro Bowl berth since the game was first played in 1970.  Six of those Bills’ draft classes have produced multiple players who have gone on to earn Pro Bowl recognition at least once.

But only one draft class in the history of the franchise has produced three future Buffalo Pro Bowlers. Name the year of the draft class and name the three players that made and played in the Pro Bowls.

McGee’s Future In Buffalo Could Be In Jeopardy

  • Posted on May 11, 2011 at 11:06 am

Terrence McGee (Photo by Mike Thomas)Although he’s yet to address the situation directly, recent words and actions recently by Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix strongly suggest veteran cornerback Terrence McGee’s time with the organization may be imminently nearing its conclusion.

Last month’s NFL draft saw the Bills select Aaron Williams early in round two.  Many immediately thought, including pending free agent Drayton Florence himself, the selection meant Florence’s days in Buffalo were over.

Florence even went as far to quip via his Twitter account “Congrats Arron williams I guess im done in buffalo enjoyed it while it lasted bills have the best fans!!!”

Well, not so fast.  Nix has said recently in multiple media interviews that Florence isn’t gone and he’s merely unsigned.  Nix said he’d like to have Florence back and when free agency eventually starts, the team will attempt to re-sign him to a new deal.

Bulls Primed for MAC Championships

  • Posted on May 11, 2011 at 9:38 am

UB TrackA year after hosting the league meet and posting the best finishes in school history since joining the Mid-American Conference, the University at Buffalo men’s and women’s outdoor track and field times are prepared to compete at this weekend’s MAC Championships in DeKalb, IL and expect successful results.

The Bulls won four league titles, all in field events, at last year’s meet. Shot put champions Rob Golabek and Becky O’Brien are back to defend their titles and the Bulls are expected to be in the hunt near the top of the standings in all the throwing events (shot put, hammer, discus, javelin).

Golabek set the UB record with his win in 2010 shot put and in 2011 has added five feet to his current mark of 62-7.75 (19.09m), which he set in winning the Texas Relays. The throw is seven feet better than the second-best mark in the league and ranks fourth in the country.

Buffalo Bills FA Quarterback Candidates: Troy Smith

  • Posted on May 11, 2011 at 9:14 am

Troy SmithBuffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix made it clear with both his actions during the NFL draft and his words that followed that the team will be finding a veteran free agent to back up starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for the 2011 season and possibly beyond.

While the free agent crop, assuming there will eventually be one is ultra-thin in regards to guys considered starter worthy, sifting through lists actually reveals some good fits for the Buffalo gig.

We’re going to breakdown as many of the options as we can.  Today we’ll take a look at San Francisco quarterback Troy Smith.

One of the most triumphant quarterbacks in college history at Ohio State, Smith captured the Heisman Trophy in 2006 in a landslide after tossing 30 touchdowns and compiling a 161.91 rating.  His margin of victory was second-largest ever,  behind only O.J. Simpson.

Daily-Links-LogoBrian Galliford writes that Spencer Johnson is hanging tight in the Buffalo Bills’ 3-4 defense.

Mammoth Bills’ seventh-round draft pick Michael Jasper is waiting to start his NFL career, Matt Vines of Jacksonsun.com reports.  Jasper, of course, is 6-foot-4 and 440-pounds.

Chris Brown from Bills.com goes over what may be the Bills post-draft quarterback plan.  Nothing specific here in regards to plan, but still worth the read to gain insight on Buddy Nix’s philosophy.

“I’m not going to go in there and be a cancer to the football team. I’m not going to go in there and act out of character. I’m going to go in there and do what I’ve been doing for the past five years. I’m going to lead.”‘  In other words, Donte Whitner is open to staying with the Bills.

Buffalo Bills FA Quarterback Candidates: Matt Moore

  • Posted on May 10, 2011 at 9:41 am

Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix made it clear with both his actions during the NFL draft and his words that followed that the team will be finding a veteran free agent to back up Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback for 2011 and possibly beyond.

While the free agent crop, assuming there will eventually be one is ultra-thin in regards to guys considered starter worthy, sifting through lists actually reveals some good fits for the Buffalo gig.

We’re going to breakdown as many of the options as we can.  Today we’ll take a look at Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Moore.

It only take a quick glance at the Panthers’ 2009 team statistics to conclude Moore was terrible in his opportunity to become a long-term starter in the NFL.  In six games last year, three of them starts, Moore threw five touchdown passes but chucked 10 interceptions.  Take away the 23-20 win over San Francisco when Moore was sensational (29-of-41 for 308 yards and two touchdowns) and the overall numbers become even uglier.

“The Voice” Frontrunner Has Buffalo Bills Ties

  • Posted on May 9, 2011 at 3:50 pm

I found this particularly interesting because not only do I write about the Buffalo Bills full-time,  I’m also a fan of the new NBC television show “The Voice”.  When I watched the premiere a couple of weeks ago, a singer grabbed my attention.  Not only did Javier Colon perform an incredible rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time”, I knew the guy both looked and sounded familiar.  I’ve been unable to put my finger on exactly how, but thanks to Chris Brown and the official Bills team website, it all came back.

Brown has a story today on Colon and his Buffalo ties.  Turns out Colon sang the national anthem before the Bills home opener last season. You can see that video by clicking here.  Brown also writes that Colon is friends with Buffalo safety Bryan Scott, who’s quite the musician himself.

Meanwhile, here’s the video of Colon’s performance on the TV show. He was one of the few to audition to have all four of the celebrity judges buzz  in and want to work with him (Colon chose Adam Levine).  My reason to root for him this season just got greater.

D’Youville Softball Headed To First NCAA Tournament

  • Posted on May 9, 2011 at 2:50 pm

D'Youville LogoThe D’Youville College softball team will be going to their first-ever NCAA Tournament after beating Mount Aloysius 1-0 to win the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship.

It was the sixth-straight win for D’Youville (21-8) and the school’s first AMCC championship in any sport since joining the league in 2009-10.

The games only scoring came in the bottom of the third inning. Alexis Walser opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a successful sacrifice bunt by Erica Comisso . Third-year outfielder Danielle Phillips scored pinch runner Lisa Petty from second with an RBI single, one of her two hits on the day, and the lead held up through the final four innings.

Buffalo Bills FA Quarterback Candidates: Bruce Gradkowski

  • Posted on May 9, 2011 at 2:36 pm

Bruce GradkowskiBuffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix made it clear with both his actions during the NFL draft and his words that followed that the team will be finding a veteran free agent to back up Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback for 2011 and possibly beyond.

While the free agent crop, assuming there will eventually be one is ultra thin in regards to guys considered starter worthy, sifting through lists actually reveals some good fits for the Buffalo gig.

We’re going to breakdown as many of the options as we can.  Today we’ll start with Oakland Raiders quarterback Bruce Gradkowski.

There’s some good, and plenty not so good about Gradkowski to digest.  One on hand, the veteran has enough starts in the NFL (20 in 32 career games) and has enjoyed moderate success.  He started eight games over the last two years in Oakland and threw for 10 touchdowns against seven interceptions. His one chance to be a regular starter came in Tampa Bay in 2006 when he threw for 1,661 yards, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions as a rookie following an injury to then-starter Chris Simms.

Monday Morning Mailbag

  • Posted on May 9, 2011 at 8:44 am

BSD MailbagI’m back from a mini vacation that accompanied my turning 40 this weekend and surprisingly, I’m still in one piece– though my liver may tend to disagree.  Fortunately it doesn’t seem like I missed much in the world of  Buffalo sports, though it was a disappointment to see that the Bandits bowed out of the NLL playoffs with a home defeat Saturday evening.

As I begin to get things situated again (three days away feels like an eternity), I’m plugging in a little Monday Morning Mailbag column.  I got a lot of comments and questions resulting from the NFL draft at the end of April and wanted to wait a little time before addressing them.

The reason for that is quite simple; people, myself included tend to have knee-jerk reactions to a series of events when forming conclusions too soon. I thought it would be best to let things marinate for a week or so and get a firmer grasp on Buddy Nix’s mindset.  As you’ll read momentarily, I ended up very much on board with the players the Bills selected, although there’s a certain element of risk resulting from his strategy.

On we go…

Bisons Shut Out By Louisville

  • Posted on May 8, 2011 at 6:14 pm

buffalo bisons Louisville starter Matt Maloney had it all working on Sunday afternoon against the Bisons…on the mound and at the plate.

The Bats’ southpaw pitched seven shutout innings -and had three hits- in an 8-0 victory over the Bisons on Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field. Todd Frazier added three big hits of his own as Louisville earned a split of the four-game series.

Maloney made the big pitches when he needed to. The Bisons put the lead off runner on in four of the first five innings, but the southpaw got three groundball doubleplays to end any early threat. Maloney then retired the final nine batters he faced, four via the strikeout.

Riverside’s Mike Williams – From run-ins to running outs and now, pitching?

  • Posted on May 8, 2011 at 7:00 am

Mike Williams 19Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Williams said he doesn’t have a chip on his shoulder – it’s more like a handful of Doritos.

The second-year pro is no stranger to overcoming adversity.

He was accused of cheating on a test while enrolled at Syracuse University in 2008. Less than a year later he was a passenger in an early morning – more like late night – auto accident, which resulted in the second violation of the football team’s curfew. As an NFL rookie last year, Williams was arrested on a DUI charge – which was later dropped, following the results of a urinalysis.

“It’s just about the chip on my shoulder,” Williams said. “I tell everybody, ‘I got a big chip on my shoulder – Doritos on my shoulder.’ It’s going to never leave my shoulder. I’m going to always look back and think about what people thought about me and keep on trying to prove them wrong – and that’s my goal.”

gone-fishin

To make a long story short, today marks my 40th birthday, there isn’t a lot going on in the Buffalo sports world and to steal a line from Prince, I’m ready to party like it’s 1999.

I’m taking a little three-day vacation.   We’ll be back in full bloom first thing Monday morning.  And if you’re a fan of the Buffalo Bandits, we WILL have a live blog set up for Saturday evening’s huge playoff game with Toronto.

Phil Hansen To Join Bills’ Wall Of Fame

  • Posted on May 5, 2011 at 8:57 am

phil_hansenThe Buffalo Bills have announced that former defensive end Phil Hansen will be inducted into the team’s Wall of Fame during the 2011 season.

One of the most underrated yet popular players to ever wear a Bills’ uniform, Hansen played all 11 of his NFL seasons in Buffalo after being drafted in the second round of the 1991 draft. He finished his career with 58.5 sacks; the third-most in team history behind only Bruce Smith and Aaron Schobel.

Hansen was a member of three of the four Bill’s Super Bowl teams and became a full-time starter in just his second season with the team.  He only had one season of double-digit sacks (10 in 1995) but was one of the most reliable components of a talented Buffalo defense.

The team hasn’t announced what home game Hansen would be inducted at yet.  He’ll become the 27th member and 23rd player to join the exclusive Wall of Fame club.
