Buffalo Sabres President Ted Black announced today that Kevin Sylvester and Danny Gare will fill in for the broadcast team of Rick Jeanneret and Harry Neale during the games they will miss with their new reduced schedule. Jeanneret and Neale will only work home games and a reduced road schedule of approximately 10-15 games. Sylvester and Gare’s road game schedule will be determined once the 2011-12 NHL regular season schedule is released later this summer.
“Of the numerous applicants we received for these positions, we realized that our most qualified candidates came from within,” said Black. “Both Kevin and Danny have a familiarity with the players and the organization, and there is also an existing comfort level with our fans. These were important factors in our decision making process.”
“I am thrilled for the opportunity to call away games for this exciting team,” said Sylvester. “I have tremendous respect for RJ’s mastery of Sabres play-by-play, and am happy that he will continue. I’m also excited to share the booth with Danny Gare, whose experience and knowledge of the game will be great assets to all Sabres fans.”

Sooner or later, the NFL labor battle will be settled and the lockout will end. When it does, free agency will commence and the Buffalo Bills will have several decisions to make. At least one of them was made in advance.
Pending free agent Ashton Youboty will definitely not be back in Buffalo for the 2011 season.
The fifth-year cornerback was not tendered by the club and a source said general manager Buddy Nix told Youboty ahead of the February 18 deadline for re-signing players he wouldn’t be part of the team’s plans moving forward.
Buffalo Sports Daily also learned that Youboty took the message seriously. He put his house on Cathedral Drive in West Seneca for sale last month and it recently sold for $195,000.
He was a restricted free agent last year and the club signed him to a one-year, $1.176 million deal.
Youboty was a third-round pick by the Bills out of Ohio State in the 2006 NFL draft. He played five seasons in Buffalo, almost exclusively in a backup role and accumulated just one sack and two interceptions in 43 games. Staying healthy was always a problem— Youboty missed 37 games during his Buffalo career.
The Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame will introduce its 12 member class of 2011, Wednesday afternoon, June 15 in the Pavilion area at HSBC Arena. Introduction of this year’s new members will commence at 3:00 pm with board president, Brian Cavanaugh, presiding.
A reception will follow until 4:30 pm. This event will mark the 21st class to be inducted into the Hall of Fame since its inception in 1991 and brings total membership to 240.
Former All-Pro Buffalo Bills lineman Ruben Brown and two time Super Bowl champion, Jim Burt, (Orchard Park, NY) will give remarks on behalf of the class. Brown, the 14th pick in the 1995 NFL Draft, made eight consecutive Pro Bowls during his nine year career with the Bills, while Burt earned one Pro Bowl nomination and captured two Super Bowls – one each with the New York Giants and San Francisco 49’ers.

The website sportslogos.net has gotten a hold of the replica Buffalo Bills helmet via an anonymous source, which is set to go on sale June 24 following the organization’s official unveiling of their new uniforms at a party taking place at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
The helmet contains a thin navy blue stripe on either side of the royal blue stripes up the middle of the helmet. The helmet also contains grey facemasks. As Buffalo Rumblings reports, the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals are the only other NFL teams to sport white helmets with grey facemasks.
The uniform unveiling is set to begin at 6:30pm that night at the stadium. Assuming the lockout is still in effect, current players will not be able to showcase the new digs. The team stated a few weeks ago that members of the U.S. military as well as alumni players will be involved in the ceremony. The team plans to have concessions available at what they’re calling “family friendly” prices and will have live music and members of the Buffalo Jills.
Does anyone remember the days when the Buffalo Bisons used to be dominant in Triple-A minor league baseball? Maybe it wasn’t that long ago, but this current crop of Bisons make it seem like a distant memory.
The Bisons lost their fifth straight game at home yesterday to the Columbus Clippers. We’re just reaching the midpoint of June and it’s painfully obvious the Bisons will spend the summer playing out the string. They’re already 15 games out of first place in their division and 11 out of a wild-card spot. Again, it’s only mid-June.
Thanks for nothing—- New York Mets.

It seems like an eternity ago, but there was once an era when the Buffalo Bills were among the best teams in league history. Buffalo captured four consecutive AFC titles from 1990-93 and though they’d fall in each Super Bowl appearance, no Bills fan will overlook the memories this cast of characters created.
While everyone remembers that nucleus of core players and what they accomplished in their prime years in Buffalo, many won’t recall what happened once their time ended and were either forced to move on or decided on their own to head for greener pastures. Nearly every key veteran from this era saw their career end with another team.
We’re running a series of articles, recalling where several former Bills’ stars would go on to finish their careers. After kicking things off with James Lofton, Shane Conlan and Cornelius Bennett, today we’re focusing on former offensive tackle Howard “House” Ballard.

The NFL lockout will eventually end, perhaps sooner than later. When it does, Brian Brohm is going to need a team to play for, the Louisville Courier Journal reports.
Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings has been breaking down film of Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Torrel Troup from his 2010 rookie season.
BuffaloLowDown. com takes a look at how the Bills defensive ends compare against the rest of the division. Here’s a hint— it’s not very good.
Bills third-round draft pick Kelvin Sheppard has hired Todd France to be his agent, the SportsBusiness Journal reports.

Three members of the men’s and women’s track and field team were named to the Academic All-MAC team, the conference office announced. All three of UB’s members were MAC Champions at the Outdoor Conference Championships.
On the men’s side, Brian Smith was one of just eight named to the squad. Smith won the 200 meters at the conference championships, while also advancing to the NCAA East Preliminary Round, where he finished 28th with a time of 21.54. Smith, who is a communication major with a 3.337 GPA, holds the school record in the 200 meters, which he set back in 2010.
The Bulls placed a pair of throwers on the women’s team as Becky O’Brien and Shante’ White were both named to the team.

In a press statement, the Buffalo Bills announced a pair of changes to their fan behavior policy beginning with the 2011 season.
One involves tailgaters. In previous years the parking lots opened five hours before a scheduled kickoff. Starting this fall the parking lots will be opened to the public for only four hours before the start of a game. Veteran tailgaters all over are surely distressed.
The other involves cigarette smoking. Ralph Wilson Stadium will now be a smoke-free facility. There will no longer be designated smoking areas as in past years. This change will take effect beginning with the new uniform unveiling ceremony on Friday June 24.

Over the past few days there’s amplified optimism a NFL labor deal could be reached sometime within the next month, which if consummated would restore free agency and still allow for team training camps to start on time. How a new CBA would affect terms and restrictions for free agency is a long way from being revealed, the Buffalo Bills have a clear-cut preference when it eventually is.
A source I spoke to made a pair of items abundantly clear; re-signing Paul Posluszny is “far and away” the team’s highest priority, and free agency as a whole is not something the Bills will be actively involved in.
Currently, Posluszny is a only a restricted free agent due to being a four-year veteran and the Bills tendering him before the lockout began. However, if a new labor deal moves up qualifying free agents to just four years, the tender would be lifted and Posluszny would become unrestricted. In the last CBA, unrestricted occurred after six years but few expect the same length this time around.

The NFL lockout is having a big effect on all incoming rookies and as the University of Richmond Collegian reports, Buffalo Bills rookie Justin Rogers is no exception.
Speaking of the lockout, the Associated Press reports that the Bills are one of at least seven teams that have seen slashed salaries across the organization.

For my money, there’s no better place on the web for coverage of Buffalo Sabres’ prospects than the work Kris Baker does for SabresProspects.com. Monday morning their Sabres 2011 draft preview was published and sure enough, Baker didn’t disappoint.
Holding the 16th pick of the NHL draft on June 24, Baker breaks down five candidates for the Sabres selection, all of which are forwards. He also has a specific dark horse in mind should general manager Darcy Regier decide to move down from their original spot (the Sabres don’t currently own a second-rounder.)
If that wasn’t enough, Baker examines potential Buffalo selections in rounds three through seven, and all are covered in-depth.

Now that the dust of the 2011 Draft has settled, it’s time to analyze the current state of Buffalo’s roster. We’ll be taking a look at one position at a time. Today: Outside Linebacker.
Ugh.
That pretty much sums up the play of Buffalo’s outside linebackers last season. It was a group that couldn’t rush the passer and also couldn’t stop the run. Not a great combination.
Is there any hope for this season? Let’s take a closer look.
Players Under Contract (7): Chris Kelsay, Shawne Merriman, Arthur Moats, Antonio Coleman, Aaron Maybin, Danny Batten, Jammie Kirlew

Zach Filzen and Titus Robinson of the University at Buffalo men’s basketball team have been selected to play for Athletes in Action and have embarked on a tour of East Asia.
The United States Eagles basketball team will tour East Asia from June 8 until June 23 playing against professional teams and holding clinics for young children.
“I am looking forward to spreading the truth of the Gospel to the people of East Asia,” Filzen said. “It is an amazing opportunity to use the platform God has given us to be an incredible influence.”
“I am looking to be more open with my personal testimony and also increase my faith in Christ,” Robinson said.

Four years after the fact, there’s plenty of Buffalo Sabres fans incensed the organization let former team captain Chris Drury bolt for the New York Rangers. The way things are looking, however, a path may be cleared for a return engagement to Western New York.
Jesse Spector of the New York Daily News reports that Rangers general manager Glen Sather will buy out Drury’s final season of his five-year, $35.25 million contract, thus making him a free agent this summer. Spector writes while the buyout would cost the Rangers $1.6 million in dead cap space for 2012-13, it would save the club $3.3 million for next season as they target a big ticket like Brad Richards.
Drury has spent the past four seasons with the Rangers, but has been unable to duplicate the success he had in Buffalo. His goal output declined each season with New York from 25, 22, 14 and down to just one goal last year in 24 games while bothered with a left knee injury that required surgery.

Canisius College redshirt seniors Chris Cox and Shane Davis were drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday. Cox was selected in the 39th round (No. 1189 pick overall) and Davis was taken in the 42nd round (No. 1279 overall). Davis and Cox give Canisius three selections in the MLB draft in the last two days and are the seventh and eighth players associated with the program to be drafted in the last four years.
Cox made 41 appearances in his career with Canisius, appearing as a starter and out of the bullpen. As a senior, Cox made nine appearances out of the bullpen and was 1-1 with two saves and a 0.69 ERA. Cox had 14 strikeouts in those 13 innings and finished third in Canisius history in strikeouts per nine innings. As a starter in 2010, Cox went 4-1 in seven MAAC starts and threw a complete game against Fairfield on May 1, 2010.

With weeks of additional time to scheme and adjust their own playbooks this offseason, Buffalo’s defensive staff has one player for whom they’ve been drawing up specific plays. His name is Shawne Merriman. Chris Brown of Bills.com takes a loo at the team’s plan for Merriman.
Matt Rich Warren from Buffalo Rumblings has begun his countdown of the worst moments in Buffalo Bills history. Starting the countdown is Thurman Thomas signing with the Miami Dolphins.
It may be the offseason and a NFL lockout to boot, but that isn’t stopping Brian Galliford, also of Buffalo Rumbligns, from studying last season’s Bills game films. His latest is a review of the second half debacle against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Football Outsiders charted the NFL’s surest tacklers and Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny is near the top.

Canisius College senior Sean Jamieson was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday. Jamieson was selected in the 17th round (No. 526 pick overall). Jamieson is the sixth Canisius College baseball player associated with the program to be drafted in the last four years.
Jamieson, the MAAC Co-Player of the Year, spent two years as a Golden Griffin after spending his first two years in college with Niagara County Community College. The two-time All-MAAC First-Team selection started 57 games at shortstop this season, leading Canisius in batting average (.350), runs scored (60), home runs (13), RBI (51), walks (34) and stolen bases (22) in 2011.
Jamieson earned Capital One Academic All-America Second-Team honors and was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week (March 28). He was one of 25 shortstops named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, an award given to the top shortstop in the country.

Buffalo Rumblings is beginning a countdown of the 25 best (and worst) moments in Buffalo Bills history. Here’s a list of honorable mentions that didn’t quite make the cut for the best moments.
And conversely, the honorable mention list of the worst.
Joe Pinzone of Buffalo Wins wonder what would of happened if the Bills weren’t snake bitten by injuries in 2000, as he continues his countdowns of the biggest “what ifs” in Buffalo sports history.
Former Bills Hall of Famer Joe DeLamielleure is not a fan of NFL players or owners, Bill Bruton of the Batavia News reports.
