Buffalo Bills Post-Draft Roster Analysis: Tight End

  • Posted on June 2, 2011 at 6:45 am

Shawn-Nelson-Bills-Photo-by-Mike-Thomas1-176x300Now that the dust of the 2011 Draft has settled, it’s time to analyze the current state of Buffalo’s roster. We’ll be taking a look at one position at a time. Today: TE.

Oh boy…here’s a potential problem. Tight end continues to be a prepetual problem for Buffalo, as the Bills have not had a truly productive tight end in years. 2010 was no different, as the foursome of Jonathan Stupar, Scott Chandler, David Martin, and Shawn Nelson combined for an uninspiring 23 receptions, 187 yards, and 1 touchdown.

The Bills responded by not tendering Stupar a contract before the lockout started – meaning chances are good he won’t be back. Then the team went ahead and did nothing to upgrade the position via the draft. Here’s who’s left.

Players Under Contract (4): Shawn Nelson, Scott Chandler, David Martin, Mike Caussin

Possibly Departing Free Agents: Jonathan Stupar

According to sources Hamilton has reported on, McCutcheon “is in limbo now.”  Hamilton writes that if Terry Pegula ends up purchasing the Rochester Amerks, McCutcheon may have a role there but if that doesn’t happen he may just be released.

McCutcheon has been a part of Ruff’s staff in Buffalo since 2000 after he spent three seasons as the head coach of the Amerks.  During that time he compiled a 128-89-9 record.

Wednesday’s “Did You Know”

  • Posted on June 1, 2011 at 10:00 am

BSD Did You KnowIn 2002 the Houston Texans were awarded a franchise by the NFL.  As a result, each of the team’s in the league were forced to expose a certain amount of players to an expansion draft, giving the Texans a pool of veteran players to choose from.

Did you know that the Bills would lose one player in the 2002 expansion draft?  The Texans selected former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Avion Black in the 16th of 19 rounds.  Black was one of five players the Bills exposed in the draft.  The others were Rob Johnson, John Fina, Ken Irvin and Raion Hill.

A former fourth-round pick by Buffalo out of Tennessee State in 2000, Black caught just one pass for 34 yards during his two-year Bills career.  He’d play the 2002 with Houston, catching 14 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, but it was his last year in the league.
