Canisius, Hutch Tech Cruise In Classic

  • Posted on December 1, 2011 at 11:06 pm

aaron whiteThe last time Canisius High School took to the hardwood, it was for the Manhattan Cup against St. Joe’s, where they trailed big at the half before storming back to win the Monsignor Martin Association championship.

There’d be no need for such dramatics in their season opener at the Pastor-Cooper Memorial High School showcase. Pitted against a gritty but overmatched OTC Middle, the Crusaders dominated literally from the opening tip, outscoring the Kats 23-1 in the first quarter (that’s seriously not a misprint) and eased their way to a 61-38 victory at Daemen College Thursday evening.

The Kats didn’t connect on their first field goal until the first minute of the second quarter when Brian Brown converted a layup.

Bills Game Blacked Out; Wilson Misses Practice Again

  • Posted on December 1, 2011 at 2:19 pm

2011-Bills-Helmet1As expected, Sunday’s game at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park will be blacked out locally because the Buffalo Bills failed to sell out their game against Tennessee before the 1pm deadline this afternoon.  In fact, the club didn’t come close to selling out.  As of early this morning, there were still more than 11,000 seats available.

This is the first black out of the season for Buffalo after three last year.  Unfortunately there is likely to be two more as the games against Miami and Denver have a lot of unsold tickets remaining.

In on-field news, safety George Wilson didn’t practice with the team again this afternoon, making his availability for Sunday’s game highly doubtful.  Wilson is suffering from a neck stinger and has missed the past two and a half games.  Naaman Roosevelt was able to practice for a second straight day and Leodis McKelvin (ribs) was able to practice after missing Wednesday.

We’ll have more details later this evening after Chan Gailey speaks to the media.

Opinion: Stevie & Stupidity

  • Posted on December 1, 2011 at 10:05 am

Stevie Johnson LegI really wasn’t planning to post something about Stevie-gate.

But the over-reaction keeps going overboard.

First it was Bob Costas and his pompous old-fart commentary Sunday night.  He sounded so old and grumpy he made Andy Rooney seem young and cheerful.  In fact, he made Andy Rooney seem alive.

Then it was New York Jets defensive tackle Sione Pouha getting his moment in the spotlight.   Pouha said Stevie’s airplane crashing routine was insensitive to the 9/11 attacks.  Pouha, who by the way was going to college in Utah when 9/11 happened and didn’t even become a Jet until four years later, apparently has been kicked in the head a few times during pileups.

Daily-Links-LogoBrian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings thinks the Buffalo Bills have a gem in rookie cornerback Aaron Williams.

If you missed it, here’s the video of head coach Chan Gailey discussing the Bills during his weekly press conference on the team’s official website.

The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reports that the Bills game being blacked out on Sunday is very likely.

This article by the National Post says that Toronto isn’t sitting pretty with the NFL.

Bills Draft Stock Currently Middle Of The Pack

  • Posted on December 1, 2011 at 6:00 am

NFL DraftAbout a month ago with the Buffalo Bills looking good at 5-2, I allowed myself to become fixated at examining potential playoff scenarios.  Amazingly, four weeks—and consecutive losses later it’s back to the annual passage of focusing attention to how the Bills look in terms of draft positioning several weeks premature to the close of the regular season.

As of this morning the Bills are the lone team in the league sporting a 5-6 record, which makes things simple to project for the time being.  As it stands now, Buddy Nix (assuming he’s still GM) would select 15th overall in next April’s draft.

It’s entirely early to even begin speculating where the Bills may be looking with a first-round pick, but the chunky extension given to Ryan Fitzpatrick earlier this season pretty much eliminates the chance of taking a quarterback.  With Andrew Luck, Matt Barkley and Landry Jones seemingly locks to be gone before selection No. 15, Buffalo would have the option to select the guy they deem no worse than the 12th best non-quarterback in the draft.
