BSD High School Hoops Power Rankings

  • Posted on February 7, 2012 at 6:00 am

Kyle BriggsNo, this is not official. If you want the official list of the top 10 large and small high school basketball school poll rankings, visit our friend Keith McShea and the superb high school sports section at the Buffalo News.  But hey, this is a democracy and starting today and running every Tuesday through the conclusion of the season, we’re going to roll out our version of the BSD High School Hoops Power Rankings.

Unlike most polls which differentiate large and small schools, we’re not going to bother with classifications, fair or not.  Simply put, I’m compiling my power rankings based on the 10 schools I think are the best in Western New York.  Our criteria is pretty unpretentious and straightforward— team record, strength of schedule and of course, talent.

So without further ado, let’s unveil our first stab at the BSD High School Hoops Power Rankings:

Moran’s Musings: Right Call, Perry & One Ruff Day

Patrick D. MoranThe debate years for some time to come following Sunday’s dramatic Super Bowl conclusion will revolve around if the New York Giants did the right thing by Ahmad Bradshaw going into the end zone for an uncontested touchdown in the final minute instead of falling down at the goal line.  Obviously, things worked out for the Giants and they’re now reveling in their second championship at the expense of New England in five years.

But was Bradshaw scoring the smart route to winning?

In my opinion the answer is yes—sort of.   Don’t get me wrong — Bradshaw didn’t even know what to do himself before halfheartedly stumbling into the end zone.  Of course, the Patriots wanted New York to score in order to give Tom Brady a final crack…. and New York head coach Tom Coughlin didn’t seem overly thrilled that Bradshaw obliged with 57 seconds left to play.

High School Happenings: Reggie, West & Walsh

Reggie AgbekoThe most intriguing matchup throughout the St. Joe’s/Timon game recently was that of centers, Reggie Agbeko and DeMilo Gibbs.  While the highly touted Agbeko was once again the best player on the floor, Gibbs certainly more than held his own, superbly knowing, and playing to his strengths, while minimizing the impact of his weaknesses.  What struck me most was the unwillingness of Agbeko to front Gibbs, or at the least, attempt to force him to catch the ball higher in the paint.  Instead, Gibbs was routinely allowed to establish position on the low block with regularity; a position he will not be moved from once he is established.

Even though Gibbs was unable to convert late free throws or a layup that could’ve tied the game, he was extremely efficient, particularly in the first half converting close range efforts throughout the contest.  The match up remained interesting through all four quarters, largely due to the varying styles employed by each big man.

Late in the fourth quarter and into overtime, Agebko began to drift farther out of the paint to receive the ball, allowing him to use his athleticism along with his length while driving to the hole.  This was instrumental in Joe’s late fight back and eventual win in the extra frame.
