Erie Community College men’s basketball player God’s Gift Achiuwa (yes, that’s really his name) was named the Region III Co-Player of the Year, an honor he shared with Leon Nelson of Genesee Community College.
Achiuwa was named the co-player of the season after a freshman campaign that saw him average 13.0 points and 13.5 rebounds a game. He led the team in scoring in five games this season and in rebounding in 25 of 29 games. He had a season-high 30 points versus Rhode Island on December 13 and 22 rebounds February 6 versus Jamestown-Olean.
Also being named to the first-team All-Region was Tola Lawal. Lawal was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.2 points per game. Lawal was a second-team All-American last season and ended his Erie career with 1,104 points. He finished seventh on the school’s all-time list, just one point ahead of Kilroy Jackson (1994-1996).
Being named All-Region third team were Tyshawn Edwards and Terrell Williams.
Edwards was fourth on the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg., but led the team in field goal percentage at 58.2 % from the field.
Williams was third on the team in scoring (11.3 ppg) and led the team in three-pointers (61), three-point attempts (156), and three-point percentage (39.1 %).
Head Coach Alex Nwora was named the Region III Coach of the Year after leading his team to the best record in school at 27-2. The Kats fell to Monroe in the Region III title game 94-88 after defeating them twice during the regular season.
Nwora’s record of 213-93 places him second on the school’s all-time win list, just 37 wins behind George Killian.
Nwora’s honor was the third of his career, adding to his awards from 2001 and 2008.
