♦ Rookie kicker Dustin Hopkins was placed on season-ending Injured Reserve. Hopkins was said to be close to returning, but Dan Carpenter has kicked well in his place and the move freed up a roster spot for Thad Lewis’ promotion from the practice squad.
♦ Marrone said Doug Legursky and Colin Brown will both play some left guard against the Cincinnati Bengals this week and considers the spot once again an open competition. Brown for the most part has been awful through five games.
♦ Cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore and Ron Brooks as well as wide receiver Marquise Goodwin return to practice this week and will be monitored. It’s conceivable all three could return to the lineup Sunday, as well as safety Jairus Byrd, who has yet to play this season but was ready to go last Thursday.
♦ Marrone admitted the team had talks with free agent quarterback and “his people” before Freeman elected to sign with Minnesota Sunday night.
♦ Of course, it’s already been made public Lewis will start at quarterback. No news yet on another quarterback roster move, and Marrone said it will be a week-to-week thing. Marrone admitted that in a “perfect world” the quarterbacks would’ve went E.J. Manuel, a veteran backup and Tuel on the practice squad.
♦ Marrone told reporters that no one has said anything to him about a possible Byrd trade and he expects him to play Sunday. Adam Schefter reported Sunday that the Bills are open to trading their Pro Bowl safety and have generated inquiries about him.
