BSD Mailbag- Twitter Style

Posted on December 24, 2012 by Patrick Moran

BSD-MailbagEvery now and then, perhaps due to not having anything better to do with my life, I like to partake in a little Q and A with my Twitter followers.  This is one of them.

I took some questions and opinions from Bills fans following Sunday’s debacle at Miami, and offered observations for your viewing pleasure.

I don’t consider myself by any means to be the authority figure on all things Buffalo Bills, but I’ve been armed with a keyboard and I’m not afraid to use it–so away we go.

Ignoring current contracts and guaranteed money, 5 offensive and 5 defensive players that should go and 5 that should stay.@Jim_Shell

(Honestly I don’t think a lot of the personnel is that bad to get rid of that many players. Offensively Fitzpatrick clearly needs to go, but that’s it. I’d like to see a better starting option alongside Stevie Johnson than Donald Jones, but that doesn’t mean Jones shouldn’t and can’t won’t have a role on the team. Defensively you may be seeing the last of Nick Barnett, Bryan Scott and George Wilson. Barnett looks like a shell of his former self this season, Scott has been a disaster at linebacker and Wilson is getting long in the tooth, with a guy in Da’Norris Searcy ready to take over. Kelvin Sheppard hasn’t showed he can be a quality starter and the jury is still out on rookie Nigel Bradham.  Essentially I don’t think there’s need for a large amount of roster turnover, as disappointing as this team is.)

Thurman hinted at something big. Firing Chan is not big. How about return of Bill Polian, w/ Herm Edwards HC? - @gottahavajava

(Thurman Thomas is quirky at times and for now at least, I’d take his Tweet with a grain of salt. Having said that, Thomas is very piped into the organization. It is at least possible that he knows of something big that may happen. If I had to take a pure guess, it would involve Polian. That would be the only unexpected thing I can think of that would get people’s blood pumping.  Again, that is a guess.)

Who do we go after for a QB? And what coaching options are available for us?@J_Walkerr

(Here’s the only thing we know for sure.  Regardless of who the head coach or GM is, the Bills need to, and certainly will draft a quarterback early, even if he’s a “reach” on most draft boards. They simply need to.  What else happens basically comes down to what happens with Fitzpatrick. I can tell you this much–if Gailey (inexplicably) gets a fourth season here, he’s not mortgaging his future on a rookie quarterback. There’s no Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III in this next draft class. I’ve been saying for months that the Bills have always liked Michael Vick and he could be a possibility when free agency begins. You’ll know if Fitzpatrick is sticking around by the end of day two of the 2013 league year.  If he’s paid his $3 million roster bonus, he’s back for 2013. For what it’s worth–if Gailey is back I expect Fitzpatrick back as well.)

Would u take Te’o if avail 1st round??? - @d_lizak

(I don’t know enough about him right now.  I’m a Notre Dame fan, have watched him play every game and have always been impressed with him.  But does he have the physical skill set that translates into a stud linebacker in the NFL? He better be if you’re taking him within the first 10 picks.  One thing he possesses that the Bills desperately needs is leadership, tangibles and a motor that will never stop running. Linebacker is a huge need for the Bills–far bigger than most people talk about it.)

Star-divide

(Nick) Barnett looks slow and doesnt explode through tackles, and doesnt cover very well either.@ZBarringer

(He’s been pretty lousy this year.  I hate saying that because he’s a good guy, a proven winner and has had a solid NFL career, but he’s undeniably slowed down this season and has often looked a mess out there. He’s got another year left on his deal but depending on where the Bills are cap-wise, he could get the heave ho.)

Star-divide

Who do you think are potential replacements for Gailey if he gets the ax? - @chuck_licha

(That’s a tough question to answer.  Unfortunately I’m still not confident Gailey is going to get fired. I can tell you Buddy Nix won’t be the one to do it–the order will have to come from Ralph Wilson.  But if he does, I’d think Bruce Arians and Josh McDaniels will be two much talked about candidates. You may hear of overtures on Chip Kelly, but that’s not going to happen.  Neither is Andy Reid.   More than anything, pray that Norv Turner wouldn’t be considered.)

Star-divide

Who would be your realistic ideal replacements for the Bills at QB and HC for 2013? - @KileyJ83

(I discussed this a little bit earlier.  To play along and be both ideal and realistic, I’d say Bruce Arians and Michael Vick.  The probability of Fitzpatrick being back to at least compete for a starting job is high, but I can’t see Russ Brandon being crazy enough to think he can sell tickets with him back. I suppose Alex Smith could be a quarterbacking candidate as well.)

Star-divide

How would you fix the LB corps? @KileyJ83

(I’m willing to take a wait and see approach with Nigel Bradham, but that’s it.  Bryan Scott definitely is gone, Nick Barnett may be as well and Kelvin Sheppard isn’t getting it done as a starter. At a minimum the Bills need two new starting linebackers.  One should come via free agency and the other in the draft. One of the Bills first two picks definitely needs to be on a linebacker.)

Star-divide

Aaron Williams needs to step up his game.. he looks awful - @gscool89

(I don’t think he looked bad against Miami this week.  He certainly wasn’t the worst player out there.  He does need to play better and was brutal for most this year.  Maybe he can turn it around in year three. Can the Bills really afford to use yet another early draft pick on a cornerback?)

Star-divide

If I remember correctly, Bobby April interviewed for the HC job 3yrs back, thoughts if April would make a good HC? @PvtGlory

(You do remember correctly. It’s worth stating that Gailey wasn’t the first one offered the Bills head coaching job in 2010.  That distinction went to Jim Harbaugh, who obviously turned it down.  To answer your question, no– I think this organization needs some eyes who’ve never worked in Buffalo before, and I don’t think they will hire a first-time head coach, especially if Buddy Nix gets to make the call. Obviously, this is going on the theory that Gailey is let go.)

Star-divide

Only Bills fans thinks they are a better team. This team sucks, they’re not better then Titans, Rams or Dolphins.@Davejr51179

(Ouch.  Sadly, there’s at least a hint of truth in that angry statement. I wouldn’t bet on the Bills against any team in the NFL at this point, sans Kansas City.)

Star-divide

Andy Levitre and Kyle Williams are very deserving as well, but probably won’t make it - @BillsGuy2011

(This is in reference to the Pro Bowl and who may make it from Buffalo. I think Jairus Byrd is a lock and C.J. Spiller deserves to get in.  Leodis McKelvin had a shot before his injury ended his season.  To answer your question, neither Levitre or Kyle Williams will get in.  Mario Williams probably won’t either. It’s hard to justify having more than two players make the Pro Bowl on a team that wins only five or six games.)

Star-divide

I thought Gailey signed a 3 yr deal? Pretty much the standard of the past. Does he possibly have an option for a 4th? - @richie_denis

( I have no inside knowledge of Gailey’s deal. It’s been reported he got five years, which if true is absurd. The guy was lucky to get a head job in the NFL again and he came to a perennial loser. He probably would’ve taken a six-week contract at that point.  Five years?!?!)

Star-divide

Levitre gets signed, Bryd gets franchised- @markbillthe3rd

(That was regarding pending free agents and for what it’s worth, I completely agree that things will unfold like that.)

Star-divide

Stevie Johnson is closing in on 3 consecutive 1,000 yard seasons. Just imagine what he could do with a “real” QB. - @chunkylover80

(You won’t get an argument from me.  But to be fair, Johnson has games where he doesn’t do himself and favors, and this Miami game is certainly one of them. He looked nothing like an elite receiver Sunday. Consistency has always been his biggest issue)

Star-divide

When did Dickerson become #1 receiver- @jrock2004

(Only in Buffalo, my friend.)
