Posted on December 14, 2010 by BSD Staff Reports

South Buffalo HelmetWestern New York’s newest Semi-Professional football team, the South Buffalo Celtics, recently announced the signing of former University of West Virginia Mountaineer Rayshawn Bolden. With the recent addition of Bolden, the already open competition at wide receiver becomes that much more intense.  Along with their plethora of talented running backs, receiver arguably becomes the strongest position on the team.

Despite already having plenty of proven talent, team co-owner Ron Anderson says the Celtics “are still excited to see who will come and surprise us come training camp time and push their way up the depth chart.”

Empire State Games Gets Canned… Again

Posted on November 17, 2010 by Patrick Moran

Keith McShea of the Buffalo News reports this morning that for the second time in three years, the Empire State Games has been sacked.  According to his article, the 2011 games scheduled for Rochester have been officially cancelled.

After the 2009 games in Hudson Valley were cancelled because of state budget problems, Buffalo successfully hosted the games this past year at venues throughout Western New York.

“To have it go so well, and to have all the people in Western New York support it locally, it’s a travesty,” said Ralph Galanti to McShea.

Galanti was the Chairman of the 2010 games in Buffalo.

Posted on November 13, 2010 by Chris Roy

Jhonas EnrothComing into the season, for all the unanswered questions surrounding the Portland Pirates, there was one position that certainly didn’t need to be questioned.

The goaltending tandem of Jhonas Enroth and David Leggio.

Now, it’s even more secure after the Buffalo Sabres announced they’ve signed Leggio to a two-way NHL contract on Thursday.

Leggio entered the season on an American Hockey League contract, and has been the better of the two goalkeepers so far to date. In eight games, Leggio is 7-0-1 with a 2.71GAA and a .917 save percentage.

BVB GameOn the field, Marissa Gallo was unstoppable, rushing for five touchdowns to take home MVP honors in leading her Brunettes team to a 34-18 victory in the second annual Blondes vs. Brunettes flag football game this weekend at Sweet Home High School.

Of course, the real winner was the Alzheimer’s Association of WNY.  While final numbers won’t be made official until later this week, game co-chairs Kristin Crandall and Tracey Callisto both said the final tally would be over $30,000 to help benefit the 55,000 people living in Western New York with the disease.

“The real winner of course is the Alzheimer’s Association,” Callisto said.  “In our second year the game grew in every way including participants, fans and most importantly, money raised.  It’s a blessing to see that many people showing their support and we plan to keep growing this event every year.”

Blondes vs. Brunettes Charity Game Set For Saturday

Posted on September 17, 2010 by Patrick Moran

BVB 1In May of 2009, Kristin Crandall attended the annual Blue Moon Gala; an event that helps support and raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association of Western New York.  She anticipated going to the event, having a good time and lending her support to the cause.   Little at the time was she aware by the time the night was over, her role in the association, as well as her life would be forever altered.

It was there she met Tracey Callisto.  A member of the Alzheimer’s Association who spent years raising money via the annual Memory Walk, Callisto already had a personal bond to the cause.  Her Uncle became a victim of Alzheimer’s before sadly succumbing to the deadly disease.  Sometime during their conversation as a quick bond was struck, the subject of powder-puff football came up as a way to raise both awareness and money for the dreadful illness.

Gladstone to Read Excerpts at Talking Leaves Books

Posted on August 3, 2010 by Doug Gladstone

Bitter Cup of Coffee BookDouglas J. Gladstone, the author of A Bitter Cup of Coffee; How MLB & The Players Association Threw 874 Retirees A Curve, will read excerpts from his book at Talking Leaves Books on Friday, August 20, 2010 beginning at 5 P.M. Mr. Gladstone will also take questions from the audience and sign copies of the book for all those individuals who purchase it that afternoon.

With a foreword written by the Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist, Dave Marash, A Bitter Cup of Coffee tells the true story of a group of former big-league ballplayers denied pensions as a result of the failure of both the league and the union to retroactively amend the vesting requirement change that granted instant pension eligibility to ballplayers in 1980. Prior to that year, ballplayers had to have four years service credit to earn an annuity and medical benefits. Since 1980, however, all you have needed is one day of service credit for health insurance and 43 days of service credit for a pension.

Here’s, in part, what the Midwest Book Review had to say about the book in its official review, which was published nine weeks ago:

Western Tops Empire State Games Medal Count

Posted on July 26, 2010 by Patrick Moran

ESG Logo BuffaloWhen it comes to Western New York, it seems three things in life are certain; death, taxes, and that the Western region will dominate in the annual Empire State Games.

The 32nd edition of the games closed in Buffalo on Sunday and for the 29th time Western led in the medal count.  The 104 gold medals were by far the most of the six regions competing throughout the state.  In fact, the final tally more than doubled any other region.

Arguably the most satisfying, and certainly the biggest headlines drawn from the games were the men’s open basketball team capturing gold after defeating Hudson Valley Sunday at Canisius College.  Kyle Downey, a junior at Sienna College, led the way with 21 points.

Western Men Win Gold in Basketball To Conclude E.S.G.

Posted on July 25, 2010 by Christopher Winkler

ESG Logo BuffaloIt was sweet revenge for the Western men’s open basketball team, as they defeated Hudson Valley — who they lost to the previous night — by a final of 86-81 to win the gold medal on the final day of the Empire State Games.

Western’s three-point loss the previous night was their only loss of the tournament, but was torched by a pair of Division 1 players in Mookie Jones (Syracuse) and Tony Taylor (George Washington) who combined for 54 points.

“We told the guys after the game and all morning that we had to play better team defense if we were going to win,” Western head coach Bill Bowe said. “We told the guys if we can keep them under 80 points, we’d be in good shape.

Western Dominates In Men’s Open Basketball

Even without big brother Kevin nursing an ankle injury, Kyle Downey and Co. had little problem disposing an overmatched Central squad.

“My teammates were getting me some open shots and it felt good getting into a rhythm,” Kyle Downey said.

Things started shaky though, as Western fell behind 6-0 early, but quickly went on a 16-4 to seize the lead for good. Kyle Downey hit a three to give them a 7-6 lead and after back-to-back buckets by Clifford, Cory McAdam hit a three to move the lead to 14-10.

WNY Falls In Scholastic Hoops, Faces Must-Win Saturday

Posted on July 24, 2010 by Christopher Winkler

ESG Logo BuffaloThe Western scholastic men’s basketball team fell 72-61 to Central in the second round of pool play Friday night and will be in a must-win situation Saturday to get into the medal round.

Despite a confident start that saw Western up for virtually the entire first half, the team was plagued by turnovers and poor shot selection, and unlike their first game, their size was not there to save them.

“I was really disappointed with our rebounding,” head coach Larry Jones said. “It was tough to get the ball inside, we had some poor shot selection, but we simply didn’t rebound well enough.”
