BSD January Month-In-Review

Posted on February 1, 2011 by Patrick Moran

Cookie GilchristSo the Buffalo Bills stagger to the finish line, Buffalo Sabres fans may finally see light at the end of the tunnel, Buffalo Bisons have a new manager, Buffalo Bandits kick off their season and a certain publisher from this very website and a starting NFL safety may end up fighting each other— for charity.

Buffalo also said hello to a well known coach joining the Bills staff and sadly said goodbye to one of the team’s all-time great running backs.

A former Bills wide receiver gets to the brink of the Hall of Fame again and a potential future Sabres Hall of Famer starts to turn it around in net after a subpar season.

We celebrated the best the world had to offer in junior hockey and mourned the 20th anniversary of arguably the single-worst moment in Bills history.

That’s the kind of month it’s been in the world of Buffalo sports.

Queen City Roller Girls Heat Up the Track

Posted on January 31, 2011 by Monica Ulrich

Addy RawlThis subject has surely been covered before. Most of Buffalo has heard whisperings of the Queen City Roller Girls and their “spectacle” of a sport…  Especially after they made it to the cover of Buffalo Spree in December of 2009.

However, everything I knew about them until now was focused mainly on…well, them.

I’ve read about how tight-knit these 120-plus women that make up the QCRG are before: how great it is to be a part of such an accepting and supportive network of people. The satisfaction of forming such close bonds with other women. Blah, blah, blah. Someone get me a tissue.

But why should I come see them skate? Why should I spend my hard-earned, recession-churned money and drive out to the boonies of North Tonawanda (to Oliver Street, no less) to see a bunch of ladies racing around on roller skates?

Volleyball, Dart Leagues Set to Start At Holliday’s

Posted on January 5, 2011 by BSD Staff Reports

Holidays Site LogoThe big snow storm of early December temporarily ruined the volleyball dome for one of Western New York’s best places to play indoors, Holliday’s in West Seneca.  I spoke with the owner of the place, Andy, and not only has the dome been restored, by they’re ready to get back to hosting leagues.

Their next volleyball season begins in January 31.  They also have four-person dart leagues set to start about a week from today.

For anyone interested in participating in either league you can visit Holliday’s at 935 Harlem Road in West Seneca or call 824-8812 for more information.  While you’re at it, tell them the folks at Buffalo Sports Daily sent ya.

You can also check out their website right here.

Gladstone to Discuss Controversial Book in Buffalo

Posted on December 30, 2010 by BSD Staff Reports

Bitter Cup of CoffeeDouglas J. Gladstone, the author of A Bitter Cup of Coffee; How MLB & The Players Association Threw 874 Retirees A Curve, will read excerpts from his book at The Dog Ears Bookstore on Friday, January 14, 2011, beginning at 6 P.M.. Mr. Gladstone will also take questions from the audience and sign copies of the book for all those individuals who purchase it that evening.

With a foreword written by the Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist, Dave Marash, A Bitter Cup of Coffee tells the true story of a group of former big-league ballplayers denied pensions as a result of the failure of both the league and the union to retroactively amend the vesting requirement change that granted instant pension eligibility to ballplayers in 1980. Prior to that year, ballplayers had to have four years service credit to earn an annuity and medical benefits. Since 1980, however, all you have needed is one day of service credit to qualify for health insurance and 43 days of service credit for a pension.

Here’s, in part, what the Midwest Book Review had to say about the book in its official review, which was published in May:

BAR SPOTLIGHT: Papa Joes Sports Bar & Grill – 1011 Walden Avenue

Papa Joes Pool TableNestled literally on the Buffalo/Cheektowaga border, Papa Joes Sports Bar & Grill (1011 Walden Avenue) is one of the more unheralded, yet busier and entertaining bars in all of Western New York.  It’s a place customers flock to from near and far, whether you reside moments down the road or the middle of nowhere, it’s become one of the more diverse watering hole establishments in all of town.

The reasons for Papa Joes success is easy to see.  The bar entails a combination of modernity as well as respect to the traditional setups you see in most neighborhood bars.  But don’t be fooled by its rather ordinary exterior appearance; Papa Joes has amenities you’ll find inside very few bars in the area, and certainly no other in its busy urban neighborhood possess.

First let’s knock off many of the variables you’ll find at most places favorite beverages are enjoyed. There’s daily drink specials, ability to wager on Quick Draw, a pool table, well-mixed jukebox and pair of big screen TVs to watch sporting events.

But there’s four things in particular that make Papa Joes unique in many regards and downright exclusive in others.  They include:

Brunettes Beat Blondes in Charity Football Game

Posted on September 19, 2010 by Patrick Moran

BVB GameOn the field, Marissa Gallo was unstoppable, rushing for five touchdowns to take home MVP honors in leading her Brunettes team to a 34-18 victory in the second annual Blondes vs. Brunettes flag football game this weekend at Sweet Home High School.

Of course, the real winner was the Alzheimer’s Association of WNY.  While final numbers won’t be made official until later this week, game co-chairs Kristin Crandall and Tracey Callisto both said the final tally would be over $30,000 to help benefit the 55,000 people living in Western New York with the disease.

“The real winner of course is the Alzheimer’s Association,” Callisto said.  “In our second year the game grew in every way including participants, fans and most importantly, money raised.  It’s a blessing to see that many people showing their support and we plan to keep growing this event every year.”

Bar Spotlight: AJ’s LOUNGE- 1028 Walden Avenue, Cheektowaga

AJs Lounge Walden AveNestled on Walden Avenue along the Cheektowaga/Buffalo border, AJ’s Lounge is one of Western New York’s true hidden gems.  AJ’s is also a rarity in that it’s the only known drinking establishment in the area that offers both a complimentary jukebox and pool table for its patrons to enjoy.

That’s right…  Only at AJ’s Lounge can you come in for a drink or bite to eat, load up the jukebox with your favorite Billy Joel, Elvis Presley and Journey songs before heading to the back and enjoying a game of billiards— for free!

If you’re hungry, AJ’s is a great place to enjoy a bite to eat.  The kitchen stays open until late in the night and features all the goodies you’ll see at most places of its kind; including chicken wings, chicken fingers, pizza sticks, mozzarella sticks as well as hamburgers or hot dogs from the grill.

If you’re part of a sports team and searching for a bar to call your home base, AJ’s Lounge owner Dick Thompson sponsors a variety of sports teams.  Softball, volleyball, darts, pool and even puck bowling teams are often found representing the bar in the WNY sports and recreation world.

Among those teams, the “Horsemen” are one of the areas best-known softball teams.  A four-time Cheektowaga men’s softball league champion, the squad has been a mainstay at AJ’s throughout the past decade.

Thompson stresses that participation and fun is the measure of a successful team, not just the wins and losses.

“We have sponsored teams of all skill levels,” Thompson said.  “Winning is always fun, but so is participating and being part of a team.  We’ve had teams that have won their leagues and others that have finished dead last.  It doesn’t matter. What matters is getting out, having fun and getting to spend time with your teammates and friends in a fun environment.  We also have drink and food specials for all of our teams.”

Beyond the playing field, if you enjoy games of chance, the bar has Quick Draw available with a pair of high definition televisions to watch the results on.  There’s also a wide assortment of instant lottery scratch off tickets available in its own machine for your gaming convenience.

Finally, there’s always happy hour and nightly drink specials to take advantage of.

All in all, AJ’s Lounge is one of the best bars in Western New York that you’ve probably never heard about.  An experienced and courteous bar staff caters to a variety of different crowds, ranging from the happy hour locals that enjoy watching “Jeopardy” on weeknights, to the party crowd looking to live it up until the wee hours of the morning.

AJ’s Lounge is located at 1028 Walden Avenue on the Cheektowaga/Buffalo border, near Pine Ridge. The phone number is 891-5934.  The bar is open at 8am daily, except on Sundays and remains open up until 4am nightly.
