Niagara Upends Bona In Men’s Soccer

Bona SoccerIn a game which featured five yellow cards and one red card, the men’s soccer team (0-2) fell to Little Three rival Niagara (1-1) Sunday afternoon, 3-1.

Niagara opened the scoring exactly 12 minutes into the contest on an own goal, and then the chippy battle began.

Just six minutes later, an altercation resulted in St. Bonaventure’s Kolby Banker receiving a red card and Niagara’s Michael Cunningham being issued a yellow. Banker was beat to a ball by Cunningham and retaliated by throwing an elbow. Playing with 10 men, the Bonnies surrendered a second goal to the Purple Eagles just four minutes after Banker was dismissed.

Zanette Skating In Blackhawks Prospect Camp

Paul ZanetteNiagara men’s hockey alum Paul Zanette will be taking part in the 2011 Chicago Blackhawks Prospect Camp, running from July 7-11. Zanette is attending the camp after recently signing a one-year deal with Chicago’s American Hockey League team, the Rockford Icehogs.

Zanette had a career senior season for the Purple Eagles. The Nobleton, Ont. native scored a career-high 29 goals, 26 assists and 55 points; the 55-point total ties Joe Tallari (’04) for most points in a single-season by a Niagara player.

Zanette became the second Purple Eagle (Tallari) in program history to be a top-10 Hobey Baker finalist and was named Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) Player of the Year to become the fifth Purple Eagle to earn a conference player of the year award. Zanette was also named to the United States College Hockey Online  Third Team.

ZanettePaul Zanette, Niagara men’s hockey’s first-ever All-American, has signed a one-year contract with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Rockford IceHogs announced on Tuesday by the club.

“We are thrilled to be able to sign a player of Paul’s ability and character as he displayed both of these traits during his entire collegiate career,” said Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard. “Paul will add scoring depth to our roster and brings an unparalleled work ethic. He’s another great young prospect that will fit into our locker room very well.”

Zanette had a career senior season for the Purple Eagles. Niagara Women’s Hoops Announces Recruiting Class

Niagara-Logo1Niagara women’s basketball head coach Kendra Faustin has unveiled the 2011-12 recruiting class. Gabby Baldasare, Meghan McGuiness, Val McQuade and Kelly Van Leeuwen are the newest additions the women’s basketball program.

“This group really fits our needs in terms of skill sets and will complement our returning group really well,” Faustin said. “Off the court, this class is full of quality character and people not to mention excellent students that I am proud to have represent our program and Niagara University.”

Niagara’s Edwards Will Not Return For 2011-12 Season

Niagara LogoNiagara men’s basketball head coach Joe Mihalich has announced that forward Kashief Edwards will not return for the 2011-12 season.

“Kashief Edwards will graduate this summer and has decided to use his last year of eligibility at another school,” Mihalich said.  “We are extremely proud of all that Niagara University has done for Kashief on and off the floor and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Edwards played in 28 games and averaged 12.4 ppg and 6.6 rpg for the Purple Eagles this past season. Edwards will graduate from Niagara and has one more year of eligibility since he redshirted his freshman season.

NCAA Recognizes Niagara Women’s Cross Country For Academics

Niagara LogoThe NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program (APP) has recognized the Niagara women’s cross country team for ranking in the top 10 percent in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) in its sport.

“Our entire institution is proud of the academic accomplishments of the women’s cross country program,” Niagara University Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin said. “Our student-athletes have a superior commitment to pursuing their educations and our women’s cross country program is a perfect example of that.”

Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.  Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

Niagara’s Healy Headlines Softball All-MAAC Teams

Niagara SoftballNiagara University senior second baseman Teresa Healy was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Year for the second straight season. Sophomore catcher Becky Zill joined Healy on the All-MAAC First Team and junior first baseman Jennifer Hare was selected to the All-MAAC Second Team.

Healy led the conference with a .425 batting average, .867 slugging percentage and a .524 on-base percentage and led the team in hits (51), RBIs (39) and runs (36) en route to claiming her second consecutive player of the year award. Healy broke eight school career records: games played, at-bats, runs, hits, RBIs, doubles, home runs and total bases during her senior campaign.

Niagara’s Peck Receives NACWAA Administrator Award

Ona PeckSenior women’s golf team member Ona Peck has been selected as one of three recipients of the 2011 National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) Administrator of Tomorrow Award.

“Ona is well deserving of this award,” said Niagara Associate Athletic Director/Senior Women Administrator Theresa Berg.  “She works hard and is a go-getter. Ona has a bright future in intercollegiate athletics.”

The NACWAA Administrator of Tomorrow Award recognizes a student, intern, or volunteer at an institution, conference office, or association for their aspirations and preparations toward a career in intercollegiate athletics. In addition, it acknowledges the outstanding leadership and involvement of the recipient on campus and in the community.

Niagara University Continues To Struggle In Baseball

Adam WagnerThe Niagara Purple Eagles ended their trip to the Hudson Valley with a 7-3 defeat to the Marist Red Foxes on Sunday from McCann Field in the finale of the three-game set.

Niagara (6-33, 3-15 MAAC) suffered its first sweep versus Marist (29-13, 9-9 MAAC) since the 2007 season. The Red Foxes broke open a close game with five runs in the seventh and eighth innings.  Marist scored two runs in the seventh inning to take a 4-1 lead.

In the eighth inning, the Purple Eagles loaded the bases with no outs when John Wilson singled to right field for his second RBI of the game. The rally was cut short when Marist’s relief pitcher Brendan Chapin struck out the next three batters. Marist added three runs in its half of the eighth to build a 7-2 lead.

Niagara Baseball Takes Series With 7-5 Win

Jim FortNiagara edged the Iona Gaels, 7-5, in the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday from Bobo Field for its first series win of the season. The Purple Eagles have won nine of the last 10 meetings against the Gaels.

“This was a big one for us today to win a MAAC series,” head coach Rob McCoy said. “We got a great outing on the mound from Jim Fort and Cody Lillich did a good job closing the door.

The final game of the weekend series was postponed from Saturday to Sunday and moved from Sal Malgie Stadium to Bobo Field on campus. Both teams battled through gusting winds as high as 35 mph as Niagara (6-27, 3-9 MAAC) held on to top Iona (12-21, 4-8 MAAC) for its first series win since sweeping Saint Peter’s last May.

Niagara’s Paul Zanette Earns USCHO.com Third Team Honors

Paul ZanettteAdd another accolade to the resume of senior men’s hockey player Paul Zanette after his 55-point 2010-11 campaign, as he was named to the 2010-11 United States College Hockey Online (USCHO.com) Third Team on Friday.

Zanette, who is currently playing with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League, was named a Second Team All-American for the East earlier this month, while also represented Niagara as the program’s second-ever Hobey Baker award finalist.

The Purple Eagle is joined on the USCHO.com Third Team with forward Stephane Da Costa (Merrimack) and Drew Shore (Denver), blueliners Matt Donovan (Denver) and Chay Genoway (North Dakota) and netminder Pat Nagle (Ferris State).

Niagara’s Nelson Earns Spot On Defensive All-America Team

Anthony  NelsonSenior Anthony Nelson was named to the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Defensive All-America Team. Nelson was one of 21 players named to the team and the only member from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

The Mid-Major Defensive All-America Team honor is another accolade added to the list of accomplishments for the Plainfield, N.J. native. Nelson joins former backcourt teammate Tyrone Lewis as the only Purple Eagles to be named to the Mid-Major Defensive All-America squad.

Nelson was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, earned All-MAAC Second Team honors and was selected to the NABC All-District Second Team during his record-setting senior campaign.

Paul Zanette Named A Hobey Baker Finalist

Paul ZanetteSenior Paul Zanette of the Niagara men’s hockey team has been named a top-10 finalist for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, awarded annually to the top college hockey player in the nation.

Zanette is just the second Purple Eagle in the 15-year history of the program to earn this distinction, after Joe Tallari was in the final 10 following the 2002-03 campaign, where he scored 26 goals, 29 assists and 55 points.

“I’m honored and humbled by being included on this list,” Zanette said. “It was a great season, but without the help of my team and coaches, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

Niagara Men’s Hockey Player Bryan Haczyk Signs With Trenton Devils

Niagara LogoNiagara men’s hockey senior Bryan Haczyk has become the latest Purple Eagle to enter the professional hockey ranks, signing a contract with the Trenton Devils of the East Coast Hockey League on Friday.

As part of the deal, Haczyk will attend the New Jersey Devils Summer Prospect Camp for the second year in a row, where he developed with many promising prospects, including Niagara teammate Scott Arnold.

“It’s been a dream for me to play professional hockey and now I’m realizing it,” Haczyk said. “The last four years at Niagara helped to not only make me a sound hockey player, but an even better person. I wouldn’t trade anything from the last four years for anything. I couldn’t be happier to be a part of the New Jersey Devils organization.”

Anthony Nelson: MAAC Defensive Player Of Year Winner

Anthony-NelsonAnthony Nelson capped off his record-setting senior season by earning the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year award, as voted on by the league’s coaches, to become the second Purple Eagle to win the award. Nelson’s 3.4 steals per game leads the nation.

Nelson, who earned All-MAAC Second Team honors on Monday, is having a record breaking season for the Purple Eagles. He became the first player in program history to have over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 600 assists and 200 steals in his career, while setting the school’s all-time career assists record with 646.

His 3.4 steals per game and 96 steals this season are school records, breaking former teammate Tyrone Lewis’ records of 2.6 steals per game and 91 total steals set during the 2008-09 season. Lewis became the first Purple Eagle to win the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year award during that season. Nelson’s 228 career steals are second behind Lewis’ 250.

Griffs Women Advance In MAAC With Win Over Niagara

Canisius Griffs AdvanceThe No. 7 seed Canisius College women’s basketball team defeated No. 10 seed Niagara University 63-51 in the first round of the 2011 Spark Energy MAAC Championship at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard on Thursday. Canisius improves to 11-19 on the season and advances to Friday’s quarterfinal round, where the Golden Griffins will face No. 2 seed Loyola University at 9:30 a.m.

Senior Micayla Drysdale led Canisius with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Durham had 12 points and four assists in 24 minutes off the bench while freshman Jen Lennox had eight points in 19 minutes. Junior Steph MacDonald had 10 points, seven rebounds (five offensive) and three assists while sophomore Melissa Gardner had seven points, three blocks and three steals.

Three Earn Honors For Niagara Hoops

Niagara HonorsThree Purple Eagles were selected to 2010-11 All-MAAC Teams announced on Monday. Men’s basketball guards, senior Anthony Nelson and freshman Marvin Jordan, were named to the All-MAAC Second Team and All-Rookie Team, respectively. Senior Liz Flooks represented the women’s team with a placement on the All-MAAC Third Team.

Nelson earned his first-ever all-conference team award after having one of the best seasons for a Niagara basketball player. Nelson averaged a career-high 15.0 points per game to lead NU in scoring and his 5.0 rpg were a career-best. Nelson rewrote section of the record book this season. He is the first player in school history to have over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 600 assists and 200 steals, recorded the program’s first-ever triple-double, became the all-time career leader in assists and set the single-season steals record. Nelson ranks in the top five in the conference points per game (fifth), assists per game (second), steals per game (first) and minutes per game (second ). Nelson has also gained nation recognition. He is one of 16 players to have recorded a triple-double this season and his 3.4 steals per game leads the nation.

Niagara Hoops Gets Win On Senior Day

Anthony NelsonNiagara wrapped up its regular season with a 66-59 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers on Sunday. Four Purple Eagles scored in double figures to help send Anthony Nelson out with a win in his final game at the Gallagher Center.

“It wasn’t a thing of beauty, but we did what we had to do,” head coach Joe Mihalich. “We had to win today to feel good about ourselves going into the tournament.”

Niagara (9-22, 5-13 MAAC) clinched the eighth seed in the upcoming 2011 Spark Energy MAAC Championships in Bridgeport, Conn. The Purple Eagles will face the Marist Red Foxes, who holds the tiebreaker over Manhattan (6-24, 3-15 MAAC), on Friday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. from the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard.

Nelson Sets Niagara Assists Record In Loss

Anthony Nelson NiagaraAnthony Nelson set the school’s career assists record as Niagara was defeated by the Loyola Greyhounds, 75-63, on Friday night at the Gallagher Center to snap its nine-game win streak in the series.

“We did not deserve to win that game tonight,” head coach Joe Mihalich said.  ”I’m not sure we had enough guys that really came to play tonight.”

Nelson surpassed Alvin Cruz’s total of 630 assists which was set six seasons ago in tonight’s game. Nelson recorded his 631st career assist at the 14:42 mark in the first half. Nelson, who leads the nation in steals, stole the ball from Julius Brooks and sent an outlet pass to Marvin Jordan who made a layup to cut the score to 7-4.

Niagara’s Bauer Nominated For Kazmaier Memorial Award

Jenni BauerSenior goalie Jenni Bauer has been selected as a nominee for the 2011 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented by Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, announced on Monday for the second consecutive season. An award of The USA Hockey Foundation, the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award is annually bestowed upon the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey.

Bauer is one of eight nominees that were selected last season. Bauer’s 2.30 gaa, .920 save percentage and 671 saves are second in the conference. Bauer, who picked up consecutive CHA Goalie of the Week honors in January, is tied for 11th in the nation with four shutouts and is 14th in the nation in minutes played. Bauer is also active in the community; she made the shortlist for the BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award in January.

Held in conjunction with the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four, the 2011 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented by LECOM, will be given out at a brunch ceremony on March 19 at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie, Pa. The list of 26 nominated players includes 17 forwards, five goaltenders and four defensemen hailing from 12 different schools in all four NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey leagues.

Niagara Baseball Drops Season Opener

Niagara BaseballThe Niagara baseball team was shutout 5-0 by the No. 23 Wichita State Shockers in the 2011 season opener on Friday at Eck Stadium.

“We played a great game today against a very tough team,” head coach Rob McCoy said. “We got a solid outing from Joel (Klock) and our defense played well behind him. Tomorrow we will look to improve at the plate and continue to play hard.”

A four-run third inning by the 23rd-ranked Shockers (1-0) spoiled a strong showing by Niagara (0-1) in its season opener. Starting pitcher freshman Joel Klock gave the Purple Eagles seven strong innings in his first collegiate game. Klock had five strikeouts, while allowing five runs and scattering seven hits.

Niagara Men’s Hockey Down Canisius 3-0

Niagara LogoA solid 60-minute effort from the Niagara men’s hockey team (17-11-3, 14-9-1 AHA) resulted in a 3-0 shutout of the host Canisius Golden Griffins (9-16-6, 8-11-5 AHA) at Buffalo State Sports Arena on Thursday evening.

Junior Chris Noonan made 28 saves, en route to earning his first career shutout victory, placing Niagara in a tie for second place with Robert Morris.

“Noonan played well tonight and kept us in the game,” Niagara Head Coach Dave Burkholder said. “Noonan made several key saves. It’s not how many saves you make, but it’s when you make them and Noonan made the big saves when we needed him.”

Noonan has not allowed a goal in the last 85:55 of gameplay, after entering last Saturday’s 5-4 overtime victory against Air Force.

Niagara Beats Canisius On Buzzer Beater

Niagara WinsA Kashief Edwards jumper in the paint as time expired lifted Niagara to a 67-65 victory over archrival Canisius on Wednesday at the Gallagher Center to cap one of the most exhilarating contests in the history of the rivalry.

“That was one for the ages, there’s no doubt about that,” head coach Joe Mihalich said. “This is what college basketball is all about and what it means to have a great rivalry. When Niagara plays Canisius (you can) throw out the records. It’s going to be a great game, anybody can win, (and) it will probably go down to the wire. I don’t know if it gets any closer coming down to the wire then it did tonight. “

The 169th meeting between Niagara (7-21, 4-12 MAAC) and long-time rival Canisius (13-12, 7-8 MAAC) concluded with one of the most dramatic finishes in the history of the series. NU appeared to be on its way to its eighth straight win over Canisius at the Gallagher Center. The Purple Eagles went on a 13-4 run to break a 30-30 tie with five minutes left in the first half to take a 43-34 halftime lead. NU extended its lead to as much as 11 in the second before the Golden Griffins gradually chipped away at the deficit.

Niagara’s Bryan Haczyk Named AHA Co-Player of the Week

Bryan HaczykFor the fourth time this season, senior Bryan Haczyk of the Niagara men’s hockey team (16-11-3, 13-9-1 AHA) has been named the Atlantic Hockey Association’s Co-Player of the Week , after netting four goals during a weekend split with Air Force.

Haczyk is sharing the honor with sophomore Erik Vos from Holy Cross, who netted two goals, three assists and five points during the past weekend. Niagara has now won eight AHA Player of the Week awards, the most in the conference, including Haczyk, a conference leading four-time honoree.

Haczyk accounted for four of Niagara’s seven goals this past weekend. During Friday night’s 3-2 loss, Haczyk netted the game-tying goal in the third period. During Saturday night’s 5-4 overtime win against Air Force, Haczyk netted his second career hat-trick, by netting a goal in each of the first three periods of play.

Niagara Tabs Brooks As Soccer Coach

Chase BrooksThe Niagara University Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Chase Brooks as men’s soccer head coach.

“Chase Brooks is a winner who can take the Niagara University men’s soccer program to the NCAA Tournament,” said Niagara University Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin. ”We were blessed with a huge pool of candidates who believed in the potential of Niagara University and Chase stood out among all of them. He will be a mentor for our student-athletes and provide a stronger foundation so we can compete for MAAC Championships.”

Brooks come to Niagara after spending four seasons as the top assistant coach for the Dayton Flyers men’s soccer program. Brooks’ main focus was on recruiting scheduling, travel and player development, as well as serving as co-director of the UD Soccer Academy.
