Former St. Bonaventure baseball alumnus Tom Marra, Class of 1980, was named to The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Board of Directors on Thursday.
Marra earmarked a $900,000 gift in September 2005 to the Anniversary Campaign for the complete renovation of McGraw-Jennings Field.
The gift converted the previously all-natural grass field to an artificial surface, while also expanding the dugouts, replacing the bullpens and providing new fencing around the entire stadium.
When the field was dedicated on Sept. 9, 2006, it was renamed Fred Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field in honor of longtime Bonnies coach Fred Handler. Marra, a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, played under Handler, who was also a physical education professor at the school from 1959 until his retirement in 1997.

Keyed by outstanding pitching efforts in both games, the Buffalo baseball team extended its win streak to five games with a pair of blowout wins. The team won game one 7-1 thanks to a complete game from Cory Folk and 11-3 in game two after riding a strong effort by Kevin Hughes and the Bulls relievers.
A sacrifice fly by River McWilliams scored Matt Pollock to lead off the scoring in the first inning. Pollock came up in the very next inning to drive home Jason Kanzler, who reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. The team extended the lead in the top of the fourth thanks to a dose of power from Alex Baldock.
Michael Burke led off and was hit by a pitch and was moved to second on a bunt. Daniel Scahill later scored him on a single to left field. With runners on first and second with two outs, Baldock stepped up and stroked a home run to left field to cap the inning and give Buffalo a 6-0 lead.

In memory of Tom Stith ‘61, the first All-American in St. Bonaventure basketball history, the Bonnies team will wear commemorative “TS #42″ patches on their jerseys during this Saturday’s game at Fordham University in the Bronx.
Stith, a New York City native, died last June after a battle with cancer at a hospice near his home in Farmingville, N.Y. He was 71.
Stith was a two-time all-American forward who helped elevate the Bonnies into the national spotlight in the late 50’s and early 60’s. For three seasons, Tom played alongside his older brother Sam ‘60, who was the first African-American player ever at St. Bonaventure. Over Tom’s career, he led St. Bonaventure to a pair of NIT appearances and, in the 1960-61 season, the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. Both Stith brothers went on to play professionally for the New York Knicks. They were inducted into the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1969.

Andrew Nicholson and Xavier’s Tu Holloway have been named Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Nicholson recorded 44 points on 74 percent shooting from the floor (14-of-19) to lead all scorers and grabbed 12 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double in St. Bonaventure’s 112-107, quadruple overtime win over Ohio last Saturday. The game was the longest in St. Bonaventure history and Nicholson’s 44 points are the eighth highest single-game total in school annals. The junior forward played all 60 minutes and netted 15 of his points in the combined extra periods. Nicholson finished the game tallying career-highs in assists (5) and free throws made (16). The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native registered a blocked shot in the win and became just the third player at SBU to block at least 150 career shots.
Holloway recorded a triple-double in Saturday’s win against Wake Forest with 14 points, a career-high 10 rebounds and a career-high 14 assists. The junior guard played 33 minutes against the Demon Deacons connecting on 50 percent of his shots from the floor (5-of-10) and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. It marked the first triple-double in the A-10 since Duquesne’s Shawn James performed the feat in 2008, while it marked the first in Xavier school history since David West accomplished the feat in 2001-02 season. The 14 assists turned in by Holloway are a league-high, while he committed just one turnover. The weekly honor is the third for Holloway this year.
