University at Buffalo head football coach Jeff Quinn announced today that defensive coordinator William Inge has accepted a coaching position with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.
Inge, who has served as the Bulls’ defensive coordinator and linebackers coach since Quinn arrived at UB two years ago, served in the NFL minority coaching program this past year and worked part of the Bills’ training camp. He will be the assistant defensive line coach for new defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt.
Inge’s 2010 defense was among the Bulls’ best in their 13-year association with Division I-A football. This past year his tutelage of linebacker Khalil Mack resulted in the sophomore earning Sports Illustrated honorable mention All-America honors.
“Coach Inge was contacted by the Buffalo Bills about joining their staff and has accepted the opportunity presented to him, which I completely understand,” said Quinn. “He set the example of loyalty in this profession, he was loyal to this staff, the players and the program and did a tremendous job for us.
“I’d like to thank Coach Inge for everything he has done for the University at Buffalo and wish him and his family all the best,” said Quinn. “We are actively seeking his replacement to coach our defense and I’m certain that we will have outstanding candidates to do so.”
University at Buffalo forward Javon McCrea was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Bulls to a pair of wins last week.
McCrea was instrumental in Buffalo’s conference-opening win over Kent State on Saturday. The sophomore forward scored a game-high 25 points and added six rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. He shot 6-of-7 from the field in the second half to help the Bulls erase an eight-point deficit. He scored seven of the Bulls’ final 10 points of the game, including the basket to tie the contest at 62 and again on UB’s next possession to give Buffalo the lead for good, 64-62.
McCrea played sparingly in Buffalo’s 111-59 win over Buffalo State on Wednesday. The sophomore forward had seven points, six rebounds and two assists in only nine minutes.

The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team rallied to defeat Kent State, 66-65, at Alumni Arena on Saturday night in the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools.
It was a tight game throughout with 12 ties and 11 lead changes. Neither team led by more than five points until Kent State took a 55-47 lead with 11:21 remaining in the second half. Kent State’s Randal Holt drained a three-pointer to put the Golden Flashes ahead, 58-52, with 8:22 left.
However, following a Titus Robinson dunk and a Javon McCrea layup, Jarod Oldham stepped up and drained just his fourth three-pointer of the season, late in the shot clock, to give the Bulls their first lead of the second half, 60-59, with 5:14 left.
Kent State recovered to take a 62-60 lead with 4:00 left. Oldham found McCrea for layups on the Bulls’ next two possessions. His second layup gave the Bulls the lead for good, 64-62, with 1:45 left.

The Mid-American Conference today, in addition to announcing the league’s new 14-team divisional alignment set to begin in the 2012 football season, also set Buffalo’s conference slate of games.
As of this fall, Buffalo will remain in the East Division with Kent State, Akron, Miami, Ohio and football-only members Temple and Massachusetts. The West Division will see Bowling Green move over from the East to join Toledo, Ball State, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan to balance the league into two seven-team divisions for the first time since 2006.
The Bulls will once again play eight MAC games this fall, hosting Temple, Kent State, Miami and Toledo at UB Stadium in 2011. Temple and Toledo were both bowl teams this past year and won their respective bowl games.

Temple scored with 0.3 seconds left to escape with an 87-85 win over Buffalo at the Liacouras Center on Wednesday night. It was a frustrating loss for a UB team that shot a season-best 55.2 percent from the field and held the Owls to 36.4 percent shooting.
The Bulls dominated the play inside as Javon McCrea and Mitchell Watt combined to score 50 points. McCrea finished with 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting. 24 of his points came after halftime. Watt scored a career-high 22 points and added nine rebounds and three blocked shots. The Bulls outscored the Owls in the paint, 50-32.
It was close game throughout as an early nine-point UB advantage was the largest by either team all night. Temple never held a lead larger than four points. The game was tied 13 times and there were 13 lead changes.

It’s nice to see former UB head football coach Turner Gill has landed on his feet. Less than three weeks after being fired from Kansas, Gill is the new head coach at Liberty University.
Gill is inheriting a decent program at Liberty. Playing in the Big South Conference, Liberty has won or co-won the conference the past four years. However, they’ve lost in the playoffs each year and are hoping Gill is the one to get them over the hump.
Gill spent four years as UB coach (2006-09) and guided them to a 20-30 record. However, no one will forget 2008 when Gill coached the Bulls to an 8-6 record and a win in the MAC Championship game; giving UB their first major bowl appearance in 50 years. They lost to Connecticut.

Oliver, an All-MAC first-team selection, set new school records in rushing attempts (306), rushing yards (1,395), 100-yard rushing games (8) and all-purpose yards (1,760). Oliver also received the first “Athlete of the Year” award given out by the UB Sports Performance Department.

A game after scoring a season-low six points, Buffalo’s bench responded with a season-best 39 points to help the Bulls defeat Niagara, 82-74, at the Gallagher Center on Wednesday night. Titus Robinson and Tony Watson led the effort of the reserves with 12 points apiece.
Buffalo won its second straight road game and improved to 5-2 on the season. The Bulls matched a season high with 10 three-pointers. Zach Filzen, who shared game-high honors with 16 points, made four three-pointers. Watson and Dave Barnett each had three treys. A sore ankle kept Barnett out of the starting lineup for the first time in 41 straight games. But the senior guard responded with nine points off the bench and hit the biggest shot of the night – a deep three-pointer with 56 seconds left to extend the UB lead to six.
Auraum Nuiriankh made his first career start in Barnett’s place and finished with five points and six rebounds in 16 minutes.

The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team gave it their all on Saturday night, but it wasn’t enough as the Bulls fell to Connecticut, 90-34, on the second day of the World Vision Classic. UConn came in to the game ranked second in the nation in the latest USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll.
The first half got off to a great start for the Bulls as they were able to exchange baskets with UConn, even taking an early lead at the 17:33 mark. It was just the second time this season that UConn had trailed in a game. However, UB had a tough time dealing with Connecticut’s full court pressure, as it turned the ball over 20 times in the opening half. When the Bulls did get an open look, they struggled to convert, shooting just 26.1% from the floor.
The Huskies again used their pressure in the second half as they continued to build on their lead. Senior Tiffany Hayes had a career day for UConn as she finished with 30 points in 30 minutes. UConn was able to capitalize on 30 Buffalo turnovers, which it turned into 39 points. The other key for the Huskies was rebounding as they outrebounded the Bulls, 49-22. The Huskies had 26 offensive rebounds, which they turned into 27 points.

University at Buffalo running back Branden Oliver was named Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after his record-setting day against Akron on Saturday. The sophomore running back set a Division I-A school record with 235 yards rushing on 29 carries (8.1 yards per carry). He also scored a pair of touchdowns in Buffalo’s 51-10 rout of Akron.
Oliver broke the previous record of current Green Bay Packer James Starks who ran for 231 yards against Toledo on Oct. 13, 2007.
Following his big day, the sophomore back now has his sights set on another Starks’ record – the single-season rushing mark. The Miami, FL native is 65 yards shy of Starks’ single-season school record for rushing (1,333 yards in 2008). The Bulls have one game remaining against Bowling Green on Friday at noon at UB Stadium.
It is the second time this season Oliver has earned recognition from the conference. He was also named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week after running for 179 yards and three touchdowns against Ohio on Oct. 8.
UB senior Brittany Hedderson was named the MAC East Player of the Week, the conference office announced. Hedderson helped lead the Bulls to victory in their season opener on Friday, one of just three MAC teams to win on the opening weekend.
Hedderson finished with a double‐double of 19 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Niagara. The only returning starter from a year ago, Hedderson reached a new career high with her rebounding total and added five assists in 39 minutes. Her scoring, rebounding and assist totals were all game highs.
This is the first itme Hedderson has been honored as Player of the Week and the first time that someone other than Kourtney Brown or Jessica Fortman has been honored since 2007.
The Bulls remain on the road tonight when they face Duquesne. Tip off is set for 7:00 pm.
Four players scored in double-figures to help lead the University at Buffalo men’s basketball team to a 72-65 season-opening win over Saint Peter’s at Alumni Arena on Friday night.
Javon McCrea, making his first career start, led the way with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. He added six rebounds and four assists. Dave Barnett added 13 points and six rebounds and Mitchell Watt had 12 points and four blocked shots. Zach Filzen had 11 points, including three three-pointers.
Buffalo only trailed once in the game, 3-2, before Watt’s dunk put the Bulls ahead for good, 4-3. Buffalo used an 8-0 scoring run to increase a 19-17 lead to 27-17 with 5:14 left in the first half. The Bulls led 36-24 at the break.
Filzen hit back-to-back three-pointers to extend the Buffalo lead to 50-34 with 13:29 remaining. Corey Raley-Ross hit a diving layup on the Bulls’ next possession to put the UB up 18 – their largest lead of the game.

Credit University at Buffalo Bulls head football coach Jeff Quinn with this much: his never-say-die attitude resonates throughout the locker room. The players believe in his system and have fought tooth and nail on multiple occasions this year.
But with just two wins – one in the Mid-American Conference – and seven losses, it’s time to start reevaluating. And the position it starts with is quarterback.
Quinn lured an old pal, Chazz Anderson, from Cincinnati in hopes that a quarterback with Big East experience would help propel them back toward the top of the MAC East. It hasn’t.

The Mid-American Conference named its preseason All-Conference team on Wednesday and University at Buffalo forward Javon McCrea was one of the five players selected from the East Division.
A sophomore forward, McCrea was named the 2011 MAC Freshman of the Year after posting one of the finest first-year campaigns in school history. He averaged 11.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while playing 22 minutes per game. The Newark, NY native shot 63.1 percent from the field, which would have led the nation if he had made four more field goals on the season.
Over the summer he was invited to the USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Championship Team training camp. He was named a finalist for the team before being the final player cut.
The Bulls tip off the 2011-12 season November 11 when they host Saint Peter’s at Alumni Arena.
The University at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena will be showcasing a new look and game-day atmosphere as the winter season of athletic and cultural events gets underway. Included in the enhancements are state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems as well the installation of a new video and scoring system. The project is a collaborative effort between UB Facilities, Planning & Design and the Division of Athletics with funding provided by the university’s critical maintenance fund and private dollars.
The result is a culmination of a multi-phase project that began in late-May. The first phase of the project included structural reinforcement of the arena, which was designed by DiDonato and Associates.

Dysert started the game on fire, completing his first nine passes, and leading Miami on three scoring drives which set the tone for the game.

For his efforts in leading the team to a critical division win over Ohio Saturday afternoon, sophomore running back Branden Oliver was named the Mid-American Conference’s East Division Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
The Miami, FL native ran for a career-high 179 yards on 34 carries and scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 5:45 remaining on fourth and one, to help lift Buffalo to a 38-37 win over Ohio. Oliver scored from 12, 1 and 1 yards out and also added a career-long 58-yard burst to set up another Buffalo score. In addition, the sophomore had a career-high five receptions for 43 yards to bring his all-purpose total to 222 yards for the game. Oliver now has four 100-yard games on the season.
Oliver had over 100 yards before halftime, and his 179 yards on the ground were the most by a UB rusher since James Starks ran for 181 against UTEP in 2008. He is quietly putting together one of the best seasons ever by a Bulls running back in Division I-A, with 679 yards (113.2 per game) and eight touchdowns through the first six games. In MAC games alone, Oliver is averaging 148.5 yards per game. He has also featured more in the passing game, with 16 catches (third most on the team) for 98 yards.
Next up for Oliver and the Bulls is a trip to the City of Brotherly Love for a matchup against the Temple Owls on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
The Buffalo football team had been in this position before this season, looking to preserve a back-and-forth struggle between two Mid-American Conference opponents.
But it was a measure of the growth the Bulls have made that on this day, despite four lead changes and huge momentum swings against the previously 4-1 Ohio Bobcats, the Bulls not only found a way to come back but how to hold on to a crucial 38-37 MAC win before 15,051 fans at UB Stadium
The win occurred because of a tremendous 18-play, 78-yard drive that concluded with Branden Oliver going over from one yard out on fourth down to give the Bulls a 38-34 lead. It was decided until Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton was sacked by senior defensive tackle Richie Smith for a nine-yard loss on fourth down at the Bobcat 39-yard line.
The heroes were abundant for the Bulls, whose offense broke out of a two-game slump with a huge day, racking up 510 yards of total offense, the most since an overtime game at Western Michigan in 2009.

University at Buffalo men’s basketball head coach Reggie Witherspoon has signed a two-year contract extension keeping him at UB through the 2015-16 season, as announced today by UB Vice President and Athletic Director Warde Manuel.
“I am pleased to be able to sign Reggie to this extension,” Manuel said. “He has been an extremely successful basketball coach both on and off the court in his development of the young men in our program. In addition to that, he has served as a tremendous ambassador for the university and the Buffalo community as well.
“Based on last year’s performance and recent additions to the team, I look forward to a bright future for our men’s basketball program,” said Manuel.

University of Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray is already drawing comparisons to all-time UT great Peyton Manning. You wouldn’t get an argument from the Buffalo Bulls after Saturday’s 41-10 loss to the Volunteers at Neyland Stadium before 87,758 fans
Bray was on target for 342 yards and four touchdowns while completing 21-of-30 passes on the day. The 6-6 sophomore looked very Manning-esque as UT used their superior speed to make too many big plays in the passing game for the Bulls to keep it close. It was the tenth straight game that the sophomore has thrown for at least two touchdowns.
Bray was particularly effective on third down as the Vols were a sterling 12-of-16 on third down conversions in the game, while the Bulls converted just 3-of-13 opportunities
Trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, the Bulls got a huge momentum change when UB senior quarterback Chazz Anderson faked a handoff and raced 68 yards untouched to the end zone to cut the lead to 14-7 after the PAT. It was the longest run of his career and the longest touchdown run by a quarterback in UB’s Division I-A history.
