One of the optimistic items to come from the Wannstedt’s presser is that he expects defensive tackle Kyle Williams to be ready for training camp.
The Bills and wide receiver Stevie Johnson have exchanged contract offers recently. Of course, any talks is considered good news right now.

As first reported by Rodney McKissic of the Buffalo News, agent C.J. Laboy and the Buffalo Bills have exchanged contract proposals for wide receiver Stevie Johnson over the past week, and McKissic cites a source claiming the sides will meet face to face next week in Indianapolis during the NFL Combine.
According to McKissic’s report, the Bills sent their proposal last week and Laboy countered with an offer this past Monday.
On the surface this may not appear to be big news and just because the sides are negotiating doesn’t mean any deal is imminent. However, the fact the Bills made a formal contract proposal is encouraging in that it shows any alleged behavior concerns they may have isn’t preventing them from discussing a deal that will keep the four-year pro in Buffalo.

When I think of hockey cards, I recall those terrific, red, white and blue Topps cards of 1954 in those nickel packs. It was Topps’ first American hockey cards ever and the 60-card set included Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, Ted Lindsay, Gump Worsley, Andy Bathgate, Harry Howell, and some great looking poses.
There were only four American teams and Topps gave us the stars of the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins and Chicago Black Hawks.
Hockey has given us great sets like the 1966 Topps with Bobby Orr’s rookie card; 1958 Topps with Bobby Hull’s rookie; and 1979 Topps with the Wayne Gretzky rookie.

The Buffalo Sabres today announced they will again partner with Hasek’s Heroes and the National Hockey League to host the 2012 Willie O’Ree Skills Weekend Feb. 17-20 in Buffalo.
The event, which is being held in Buffalo for the fourth time, will bring together more than 50 boys and girls from youth hockey organizations throughout North America, including Buffalo, Columbus, Philadelphia, New York, San Jose, Boston, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. All of the participants will be representing a youth hockey affiliate of the NHL’s Hockey is for Everyone initiative.
“It will be exciting to have the opportunity to go through the drills with the kids,” said Sabres Chief Development Officer Cliff Benson. “Having so many hockey legends in one place is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these young players. They’ll get a chance to improve their game on the ice and learn important life lessons at the same time.”

Hmm, is Shawne Merriman recruiting wide receiver Vincent Jackson?
Stanford Routt visited the Buffalo Bills on Monday and while he has several other visits lined up, he does consider the Buffalo Bills a team on the rise. He may truly feel that way, but we think unless Buddy Nix ponies up significantly more than any other team, the Bills will be rising without him in 2012.
Recent signee David Clowney hopes to be speed the Bills need, Chris Brown from Bills.com.
Randy Moss announced he’s making a comeback next season and his agent claims that at least three teams have already shown interest in the wide receiver. Could the Bills be one of those teams? (we highly doubt it but you never know.)

So just let me introduce myself
My name is Humpty, pronounced with a Umpty.
Yo ladies, oh how I like to…
Sorry, I always wanted to start an introductory column referencing one of the greatest hip-hop anthems of all-time. Did that song really come out more than 20 years ago? I still remember hearing it on the radio for the first time my freshman year of high school. Did I just age myself? I digress.
I was born and raised in Saratoga Springs. I’m sure most of you have heard of the Spa City, but in case you haven’t, travel 300 miles east on I-90 and you’re there. I’ve been working as a sports journalist, editor and freelance writer since finishing college. I’ve covered everything from youth baseball to the Kentucky Derby. I’ve interviewed Dean Smith, Tom Coughlin and O.J. Simpson in no particular order. I eat and breathe sports. I look forward to immersing myself in the Buffalo area sports scene and Buffalo Sports Daily is the perfect vehicle to achieve this.

The debate years for some time to come following Sunday’s dramatic Super Bowl conclusion will revolve around if the New York Giants did the right thing by Ahmad Bradshaw going into the end zone for an uncontested touchdown in the final minute instead of falling down at the goal line. Obviously, things worked out for the Giants and they’re now reveling in their second championship at the expense of New England in five years.
But was Bradshaw scoring the smart route to winning?
In my opinion the answer is yes—sort of. Don’t get me wrong — Bradshaw didn’t even know what to do himself before halfheartedly stumbling into the end zone. Of course, the Patriots wanted New York to score in order to give Tom Brady a final crack…. and New York head coach Tom Coughlin didn’t seem overly thrilled that Bradshaw obliged with 57 seconds left to play.

University at Buffalo head football coach Jeff Quinn has announced his initial signees for the 2012 recruiting class on the first day of the National Signing period.
Announcing his third recruiting class, Quinn added 19 players, including every position, with an emphasis on states that fit the Mid-American Conference blueprint. 15 of the 19 players hail from either New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio or Michigan with Florida, Virginia, Maryland and California checking in with one each.
The class is extremely balanced with nine defensive players, nine offensive players and one punter in the group. The largest areas by position are defensive line and defensive backs with four players each.

♦ The Buffalo Bills are pretty much going to a 4-3 base in 2012, which doesn’t differ as much as you think from last year. The biggest change moving forward is that Nick Barnett is no longer the middle linebacker. Instead, he’ll move over to the weak side with second-year pro Kelvin Sheppard taking over inside. Who plays on the strong side in the 4-3 remains to be seen. On paper Shawne Merriman appears to be the favorite, yet I’m not even convinced he’ll be on the roster next season.
♦ Former UB Defensive Coordinator William Inge was recently hired by the Bills as an assistant defensive line coach and while thrilled for him personally, I was a bit bothered by head coach Chan Gailey’s comments about the move on Monday. I’m paraphrasing here, but regarding Inge getting the job Gailey alluded to Inge quite possibly growing into a great coach someday. Call me crazy, but shouldn’t the Bills be focused on hires that are great coaches now after 12 straight seasons of no playoffs? It’s that kind of mega -patient mentality within the organization that drives me nuts. Again, this is no knock on Inge at all.

How far under cap are Bills including carry over from unused last year- Scott Eustace (via Twitter)
Scott, it doesn’t matter. Yes, how much under the salary cap the Bills are under certainly matters, but carry-over from any unused money is irrelevant. The reason why it is because as frustrating as it can be for fans, the Bills simply do not carry over unused money and apply it to the next year. The Bills not operate under a “cash to cap” philosophy but they do it on a year-to-year basis. That means if they leave $15 million on the table one season, that money doesn’t automatically get rolled over into their spending the following year. That’s the Buffalo part of cash-to-cap I hate. In reality, most teams in the league operate on a cash-to-cap basis. Buffalo however, is one of the few if not only team that doesn’t roll anything over either.
For the record, exactly how much the Bills are under the cap is something I’m working on finding out.

I like Chad Kelly. Overall he’s a quality kid and quite obviously a ridiculously talented football player. He’s taking his extraordinary talents to Clemson next year and genuinely I wish him nothing but the best. But this youngster needs to gain some maturity in a big way as he evolves and if I could offer him advice, I’d pungently suggest him discarding Twitter.
Maybe it’s the hype of carrying a famous last name or perhaps he’s just not aged enough to handle the intense scrutiny of the media spotlight, but if you follow Kelly on Twitter surely you see what I’ve been seeing—the kid has been acting the fool lately. Kelly may not be the next rocket scientist when he’s a grown adult but he’s certainly no dummy either. Unfortunately, his spelling of words, grammar and context on Twitter are making him an easy target to critics (and haters.)
Until now I’ve enjoyed hearing what he has to say and I’ll always root for him, but for the time being I think it’s time for him to ditch Twitter—and songs rapping about him.

If you haven’t noticed lately and certainly I hope you have, there hasn’t been any new content all week long at Buffalo Sports Daily. The reason is simple and yet at least for me, highly unfortunate. I’ve spent the better part of the past week hospitalized and overall physically derailed after being diagnosed with a lung/breathing condition called “C.O.P.D.”
As a middle-aged adult, the news came as a shock, though in retrospect I should’ve known someone along these lines was coming. I woke up early one morning not long ago nearly unable to take a deep breath. Sensibility finally won out over stubbornness thanks largely to my wife and I went to the doctor, expecting to be told I had the cold or flu, perhaps bronchitis worst-case and be sent on my way home armed with antibiotics.
Around 72 hours later, I remained in a hospital bed armed with IVs in the arm, oxygen monitors on my fingers, constant breathing treatments, an unsatisfied appetite and a bedside television system lacking ESPN.

If you read my illness post, you know I’ve been gone and out of sight in regards to Buffalo sports for the past week. When it comes to the Buffalo Sabres, I actually feel blessed about that.
At a loss of words on what to think of this organization right now, I came across a tweet from Jeremy White of WGR 550 he posted earlier this week; an incredibly accurate statement that in my opinion captures the general sentiment of fans everywhere.
“The Sabres have gone from being injured underachievers to lifeless unengaged deadbeats in the eyes of the league. Truth hurts.” White wrote.
I can’t really insert a lot of opinion right now. As stated, I’ve been out ill and haven’t watched much, if any of the team lately. From everything I’m hearing… that’s a good thing.
I’ll be back on the Sabres beat Monday. I’m sure it won’t be pretty. In the meantime, solid tweet, Jeremy.

It’s an off day at Buffalo Sports Daily as the time will be spent with loved ones, opening presents, experiencing the joy of giving and of course, the disgust later in the evening upon going through bank and credit card receipts as reality creeps in that overspending will take several months to pay off.

We plan on making 2012 our biggest and best year of local sports coverage ever. New talent will be added to our staff and we’re working on creative ways to make your visiting experiences more enjoyable on a daily basis.

The good news is that for the second straight game, the effort was there and the Buffalo Sabres are getting closer. Then again, you know what they say about being close.
The Sabres struck first in Toronto but failed to hold the lead. Nazem Kadri scored the go-ahead goal 5:52 in the final period and the Maple Leafs hung out to hand the Sabres their third consecutive road defeat, 3-2 Thursday evening.
