Before Jonny Flynn came to the Minnesota to play in the NBA for the Timberwolves, nearly every time he was part of a blowout it was on the winning end. His legendary Niagara Falls high school teams would often destroy opponents and his Syracuse teams often got the better of the opposition as well.
So being on a team as a NBA rookie that makes losing regularly an art has been a huge culture shock for Flynn. But nothing to this point compares to what went down in Phoenix last night.
Flynn took the floor against two-time former MVP Steve Nash and simply put, the Suns ran all over the helpless Wolves. By the time it was over, Flynn walked into the visiting locker room on the heels of a 152-114 blowout loss.
That’s not a misprint—the Wolves gave up 152 points in the game.
Paul Westhead and his 1990-91 Denver Nuggets think the Wolves should play some defense.
Flynn shot 5-for-14 from the field and finished with 10 points and eight assists in 30 minutes. Matched up against Nash much the night the rookie from Western New York showed he still has a lot to learn. Nash has 13 points and 14 assists despite playing just over half the game.
Minnesota has lost 10 straight games, the longest active streak in the league. That could reach 12 quickly as the team travels to Utah tonight and then to the Staples Center on Friday to play the Lakers.
Flynn is averaging 13.5 points and 4.4 assists per game, good numbers for a rookie on a very bad team. But he continues struggling to grasp Kurt Rambis’ triangle offense. Flynn has 2.9 turnovers per game, third most among NBA rookies.
To his credit, he is fourth in rookie scoring and fifth in assists.
